SCI FI Channel Seeks Sanctuary
In what’s looking like it might be the pilot season of the future, SCI FI Channel has plucked a new TV series from the World Wide Web. The network ordered up 13 episodes of Sanctuary, making it the first live-action /CGI combo series to air on TV.
Not that it was a hard leap to make given the show’s SCI FI ties. The drama stars Stargate’s Amanda Tapping and is produced by Stargate Atlantis’ Martin Wood.
The webseries was made by having live actors perform against mostly “virtual sets”. Tapping stars as the enigmatic Dr. Helen Magnus who, along with her young protégé, Will Zimmerman, played by Robin Dunne (Dawson’s Creek, Species 3), are on a quest to track down, aid and protect all manner of strange creatures that walk the earth.
This live action/CGI combo is the same style that was used to produce films such as Sin City and 300 and it opens up a whole host of possibilities when it comes to creating historical or otherworldly properties.
“’Sanctuary’ promises to be a totally fresh television viewing experience,” says SCI FI Channel. “This stylistic approach to ‘virtual sets’ has proven hugely popular on the big screen, and we have been looking for a chance to use it on a television series. We’ve worked with Damian, Martin, Amanda, and Sam on numerous projects in the past, and think they are the perfect team to tackle something this ambitious.”
