I’m One of the Oceanic Six!

February 2, 2008 by brian

The less Lost fans know what is happening on the show, the more we love it. Trying to figure out the answers to the numerous questions left out there is part of this show’s addiction. The first new episode of 2008 didn’t disappoint in that regard. As spoilers throughout the internet had revealed, six passengers on the ill-fated Oceanic Flight 815 will get off our favorite island.

The flash forwards in the last episode we saw in’07 let us know Jack and Kate got off the island and in the first few moments we learn Hurley gets off the island as well. He also appears to have found Starsky and Hutch’s old car.

All kidding aside, Jorge Garcia should get an Emmy nod for his work in this episode. I hadn’t recovered from his scene telling Claire that Charlie died when Garcia got me again. His impassioned speech about going with Locke’s group because that’s what Charlie would have wanted was brilliant. And didn’t you just know that it would go badly for Hurley? After all, everything does. Sure enough, a few minutes later Hurley admits going with Locke was a bad choice.

Garcia played his comic timing awesomely too. I couldn’t help but crack up when Hurley responded gleefully to getting committed. I can’t wait to learn what role Hurley plays in wrapping up all these loose ends.

Garcia didn’t hog all the great funny lines, though. Michael Emerson continues to be deliciously smarmy as villain Ben Linus. The dynamic between Ben, Jack and Locke is great as they clearly can’t stand each other but are constantly forced to work together. A still chained-up Ben politely asking to leave with Locke displayed a perfect balance between comedy and drama.

I don’t trust the “rescuers” and at this point I doubt anyone else does. A simple rescue mission on Lost? Anyone who expects it to be that easy hasn’t been paying attention. As usual, I have no idea what’s going to happen. Heck, I have no idea what’s currently happening. And as usual, I’m loving every minute of my confusion.

Lost airs Thursdays on ABC at 8 p.m. central standard time.
