Stranded With Sci Fi and Virgin Comics

Virgin Comics is deploying the big guns in its battle with the comic book industry’s Big Two. Virgin and the Sci Fi Channel have entered into a partnership that can exist in multiple media. They’ve fired the opening salvo across the industry’s bow with The Stranded, featuring a story by comics mainstay Mike Carey.

The cover by Marc Silvestri jumps out at you and helps set the pace for this tale. He only does the cover, though, with Siddharth Kotian taking over the chores inside the book. His style works for what is going to be a dark and mysterious tale.

As to that tale, I would have enjoyed it better if the two-page spread at the end of the book explaining this new world had been at the beginning. Carey talked about the birth rituals of the cuckoo bird and how that analogy translates to The Stranded. It’s great stuff and I felt like I learned more about The Stranded in those two pages than I did in the 20 pages before.

But with all that said, I still ended this book with a desire to know more about these characters. However, comic book fans know The Stranded’s true enemies aren’t from their alien homeworld. Their real foes are the 200 Batman and X-Men comics also on the shelves. The media power of the Sci-Fi Channel and Virgin’s massive company will go a long way towards leveling that playing field. I’m excited to see what else they have to unveil for us.
