Top Things To Do To Save the World
February 21, 2008 by Cynthia
Last month we asked Sarah Connor fans what one thing they would do right now to make the world better in the future. Now SCI FI Channel is asking the same question with their “Visions For Tomorrow” campaign.
Here’s the lowdown:
Did Star Trek inspire the iPhone? Did H.G Wells’ The Time Machine propel NASA to put a man on the moon? How will giving blood or taking mass transit make tomorrow a better place to live? Science fiction has the incredible power to bring the future to life in all of our imaginations. SCI FI’s Visions For Tomorrow, a multi-platform pro-social campaign, seeks to inspire a more positive view of our future by generating a national dialogue on how science fiction’s influence can truly make a difference, SCI FI’s Visions For Tomorrow, in partnership with DIRECTV, launches a new online poll, “Top Things To Read, Watch, See, and Do To Save The World.”
The poll will have readers voting for the most powerful voices in scifi be they TV shows, film or literature based and from this we’ll hopefully find solutions for a better tomorrow. It all reminds me of the early days of Disneyland, where visitors sat through shows and walked through exhibits designed to demonstrate how technology would improve the quality of life. The Monsanto House of the Future, built in 1957, promised that all homes would have microwave ovens for quick cooking, picture phones for better communication and furnishings made of sturdy PLASTIC! This “futuristic” home was thought to be a work of fiction by many, but look at us now with robots that vacuum the house while we sleep!
Scifi visionaries have always had the uncanny knack for “seeing the future”, now it’s time to use that vision to help save the world.
To participate in the poll, fans can visit www.scifi.com/visions from now until Monday, March 31, 2008 and vote for the films, televisions programs, works of literature, and the most important things they believe individuals can do to save the world. SCI FI will tally the votes and announce the fan-created list in April 2008. At the same time, SCI FI will release its official top ten lists of film, television, and literature created by a blue ribbon panel of jurors from SCI FI and the Visions For Tomorrow advisory board.
