Part 1 ‘Enterprise Experiment’ Review
It goes without saying that D.C. Fontana, who worked with Gene Roddenberry, gets classic Star Trek but I’m saying it anyway: D.C. Fontana gets classic Star Trek.
There really wasn’t any doubt in my mind that she’d be the perfect person to take us into “Year Four” of the Enterprise’s voyage through comics from IDW Publishing. You’ll remember in the now classic episode The Enterprise Incident, Kirk disguises himself as a Romulan to steal their cloaking technology. So why can’t Federation ships cloak? There had to be a story there and now some 40 years later it’s being told.
This one is Trek at its finest. Spock showing a friend’s compassion for Kirk yet not wanting to admit it. The Enterprise staff figuring out they’re trapped between space and time like it’s a problem as common as the cold. A Vulcan mind meld thrown in for good measure. And of course the threat of the Romulans’ revenge. The draw blood first, ask questions later Klingons will always be Trek’s most famous villains. But the cold, calculating Romulans deserve a place at the table too. They make only a brief, cliffhanger setting appearance here and like everything else in the book, it works. Even the artwork generates a 1960’s feel that brings both the live action show and the subsequent cartoon to mind. This is how it should be done and if all the Star Trek: Second Stage titles can live up to this, we are in for quite a ride.
