AFI’s 10 Top 10
Let me start by saying, I read the press release three times and I’m still not sure I have this right! But here goes.
On June 17, on CBS, The American Film Institute (AFI) will present AFI’s 10 Top 10. This new special will count down the top 10 films from 10 classic genres including fantasy, science fiction, animation, western, mystery and more.
This 11th annual special will celebrate the film genres that have never been honored before, the top 10 will be chosen from a pool of 50 in each category, a total of 500 movies, which will be sent to 1,500 leaders in the creative community including directors, actors, critics and historians. (Yeah, I know, the voting rules for the Oscars is simpler than this.)
Some of the films on the list (of 50 which will be voted down to 10 per genre) include:
Animated: PINOCCHIO (1941) and SHREK (2001); Fantasy: KING KONG (1933) and THE LORD OF THE RINGS (2001); Sci-Fi: WAR OF THE WORDS (1953) and THE MATRIX (1999); Gangster: SCARFACE (1932) and THE DEPARTED (2006); Westerns: THE SEARCHERS (1956) and UNFORGIVEN (1992); Sports: THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES (1942) and SEABISCUIT (2003); Romantic Comedy: IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) and MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING (1997); Courtroom Drama: WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (1957) and A FEW GOOD MEN (1992); Mystery: SHERLOCK HOLMES (1939) and THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995); and Epics: BEN-HUR (1959) and BRAVEHEART (1995).
So I throw it out to all of you. What science fiction and /or fantasy movies should be included on AFI’s Top Ten List?
