No Trilogy for Marvel’s First Family
Chris Evans, aka the Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four films, told MTV there will not be a third. Instead, it sounds like Fox wants to use the Silver Surfer’s appearance in the second film to spin him off into this own movie.
That jibes with comments former Babylon 5 scribe J. Michael Straczynski made last month at Wondercon, saying he would write a Surfer film featuring Galactus. JMS said Fox purposely held off showing the Big G in that movie to have a “big reveal” in the Surfer’s film debut.
The first two FF films were pretty bad. Perhaps every comic book isn’t made to be adapted into a live-action movie. With JMS writing the script, I’m at least happy about the Surfer’s prospects. How neat would it be if Galactus tries to eat the Narn or Centauri homeworlds?

I’m not a huge comic fan, but I watched “The Fantastic Four” because I’ve enjoyed Ioan Gruffudd since seeing him in A&E’s Hornblower films. I’m not sure why everyone thinks these films were so horrible. I thought the films good comic-ish renditions and the characters well-acted. These films weren’t as dark as the X-Men series of films, but they were truer - IMO - to a film rendition of a comicbook. Why is that a bad thing? Of all the comicbook characters that have been translated from page to screen, only 2 films are on my shelves next to “The Matrix” Trilogy, the “Underworld” duo, Harry Potter and my classics “Chocolate” and “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and that’s the Fantastic Four films. Maybe “critics” should give those last 2 a break…

I liked the Gruffudd casting, but to me he and Jessica Alba had no chemistry. Of course, I didn’t think Jessie was right for Sue Storm either.
And I didn’t like Julian McMahon as Doom, but some of that was due to the writing. To me he didn’t really begin acting “villainous” until the end of the film. Most of the film he was just a jerk.
And giving him powers is like giving Lex Luthor super powers, it cheapens the character. And the movies unfortunately always draw comparison to the initial work of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, which was revolutionary. It’s not fair, but that’s just how it is. I have hope for Silver Surfer though.

Didn’t Doom have powers in the comicbooks? What kind of an evil villain/foe is he for the FF if he doesn’t have superpowers? Obviously this detail was lost on me, as a non-comic reader. However, as a movie-lover who doesn’t read comics, I thought the Fantastic Four movies were very enjoyable escapism.

Hope you had a Happy Easter, KayDee. In the books, Doom’s only power is that he’s a super genius. But he’s developed gadgets that allow him to trade punches with The Thing or withstand Invisible Woman’s force fields. To me that’s an integral part of the character.
Doom and Richards are both geniuses in the books. The movie’s Doom got his powers completely by accident. Part of Doom’s villainy is that he hates Richards for irrational reasons. Doom in the movie has a legitimate reason to beat up Reed because in the movie it kind of is Reed’s fault.
