Jericho Could Be Hot in the Right Hands

by brian on March 28th, 2008

Riddle me this: When is a canceled show a potential lynchpin for a network? When that show is Jericho and the rumored bidders are the CW Network and the Sci Fi Channel.

The six million viewers that Jericho bowed out with March 25 wasn’t much to a network like CBS, but would be a huge boost to CW or Sci Fi. Sci-Fi has the most experience in this line of work, as they saved Sliders and Stargate when Fox and Showtime respectively gave up on them. Sliders never quite connected with its initial audience the same way. Stargate, however, went on to become the longest running sci-fi show in American history. It even yielded a successful spinoff in Stargate:Atlantis. (I can see my co-blogger Cynthia somewhere pumping her fists on that reference.)

The announcement that Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk are leaving Smallville likely puts that show on borrowed time. Jericho would fill the tremendous void Smallville will leave pretty nicely. I have a feeling things are about to get good, and you know SFUniverse is going to keep you posted.

I’m not sure CW really has the budget for a show like Jericho… Not sure either what they would do with it, since it’s not really in their typical “teen” show category. It should would be a good way for them to widden a bit their horizon though and that could be a very good thing.
Hey I’m a Supernatural fan above all (with Jericho second) so if getting Jericho makes more people aware that CW does not just hos teen shows anymore, I’m all for it!!! Make my Thursday night complete Dawn!! Lol.

I’m seeing the SciFi channel as a more likely option, but alas I’m not sure that either if them will make it past wishes… I will fight for it for sure!!

I concur with Karen : From your lips (fingertips) to the PTBs’ ears (eyes).

I didn’t know those two were leaving Smallville. Too bad for the show, but I suppose it’s had more than a decent run over the years.

I hope CBS is willing to come to some sort of an agreement with either of the networks. It would be nice to see how the idea of save the town - save the country - save the world would play out and what arcs the writers had in mind for the characters.

I’m optimistic it lands somewhere. And I really think Sci Fi is the better option. Although as I mentioned, CW may need it more. But as we’ve discussed here, I don’t know if Jericho pulls in the young demographic CW covets.

I am fighting mad about the Jericho cancelation. It was top 10 across the board on all platforms. Itunes, Amazon, Xboxlive downloads, Web site activity, DVR/Tivo stats a,d online views.

    Nuts to Nielsen!

Jericho does have an amazing, almost fanatical following, and, yes, I’m speaking from experience. No other show on television is as compelling as Jericho. The writing is brilliant, the directing is excellent, and the cast is phenomenally talented. Words can’t really describe how most Jericho fans feel about the show. I think another network picking up this show is the best for all involved. How can you beat a show that comes with 6 million (and growing) dedicated and loyal fans? I don’t think you can.
