Nim’s Island Takes Second at Box Office
The big sci-fi and fantasy heavyweights aren’t due out for another month yet, but Nim’s Island got off to a strong start this past weekend. The story about a brave girl’s friendship with the reclusive author of the girl’s favorite adventure novels pulled in $13.3 million.
That put it in a virtual tie with the George Clooney-directed comedy Leatherheads. The two films were so close in estimated take they could switch second and third places after the final weekend numbers are official. The movie 21, based on the true story of a group of math whizzes who take casinos for all they’re worth, had its second week in first with $15 million.
While everyone connected with Nim’s seems excited about its opening, the $13 million is a disappointment for the Clooney vehicle. That price tag probably doesn’t cover the cost of the onset perks Clooney and co-star Renee Zellweger receive.
Nim’s was one of two films that might have appealed to genre fans this weekend. The other in wide release was The Ruins, which opened in fifth place with a disappointing $7.8 million. That one is an adaptation of a Scott Smith horror novel about tourists whose vacation ends up being - not so relaxing.
The summer movie season can’t arrive soon enough for Hollywood execs, as the industry wide doldrums have had a stranglehold on movies all year. The top 12 films brought in 27 percent less than the top 12 on the same weekend in 2007.
Most experts don’t expect the true fireworks to begin until the May 2 opening of Iron Man, based on the Marvel Comics superhero.
