Sony Ready to Flash Moviegoers

Hey, I made you look, didn’t I? Variety says Sony has locked up the rights for a new Flash Gordon live-action film. The first step? Make sure this guy is nowhere near it:

With the surprising success of Iron Man, the word in Hollywood is that execs are looking even harder at potential comic-based franchises. The 1980 Flash Gordon movie has become a cult classic in spite of a cheese factor that included so-so special effects, a virtual unknown in the lead role and second-worst James Bond ever Timothy Dalton in a major role.

It was miles better than Sci Fi Channel’s short-lived revamp that even network brass have gone on record panning.

Flash Gordon has so much potential if you can just hit that mark between parody and just plain dumb. Could be exciting and huge and — a truly great space opera — when put into the right hands and yes, Queen is a must
