Torchwood Returns for Season Three – Sort Of
June 3, 2008 by Cynthia
According to TV Guide, Torchwood will begin filming new episodes this August and John Barrowman, the dashing Captain Jack Harkness, will be front and center!
But wait. Don’t send up the balloons just yet.
The second part of the announcement is that they’re only filming five hours. Five hours for the whole season.
“We’ve decided to do a five-part mini-series, one big story that will run during one week,” says executive producer Julie Gardner, adding, “I wanted to make a really big noise about the show.”
Big noise? That big noise you hear are fans screaming for more! Though I love the idea of a huge five-part story arc, I’m not happy knowing that’s all there is. The article suggests that the BBC “might” pick up additional episodes, but since this first arc hasn’t even been scheduled until Spring of 2009, it’s unlikely they’ll order more anytime soon.
Perhaps they’re looking to create a yearly mini-series event. That would give Barrowman and company a chance to work on other projects and still keep Torchwood alive. If that’s the only option, then I guess it’s better than no Captain Jack at all.

What only five episodes! This show and all of BBC America got me through the writers strike. If the BBC feels this is the best i will go along with them. By who are the cast members?
They’re being particularly cage about the cast. Said fans would be happy about it — but what does that mean?
Really only Jack, Ianto and Gwen are alive. Do you suppose that Martha Jones is taking Owens spot and that Mikey from Dr.who will replace Toshiko.
With only 5 episodes, they should just bring in two newbies and let that be part of the plot- how the remaining 3 adjust to these new people – who could be quite expendable with the shorten version of the series.
Rumour whislt at Comic Con in SD a few weeks ago (with Julie Gardner in the lift chatting on the mobile) was that Noel Clarke and Freema Agyeman were the two additions to the cast of Torchwood, and that the season was a 5 parter.
To MATCH the 5 episode season of Doctor Who with tennant.
And that the “happy fans: would be because Doctor #2 was to appear in the new Torchwood 5-part series.
Thus, filming for 5 episodes of TW and 5 episodes of DW would be doable for the actors Tenannt and Barrowman.
Perhaps they’ll do an SG-1/SG-Atlantis thing and bring in Torchwood II – Glasgow, or Tales from Torchwood I Archives. (I have the beginings of a Torchwood IV story, but I’m not letting on just yet.)
I’m so disappointed that “Torchwood” is not coming back as a weekly series. Seems that Dr. Who isn’t making more than 5 either. What is up with the Brits. Good lord I’m glad I don’t have to depend on British TV for everything I love or I’d go crazy. I know they had a big audience so what gives?
