Nonsensical, These Tie-Ins Are
If you ain’t nitpickin’ your favorite franchises, you ain’t truly geeked out. My current gig is the logical evolution for a guy who’s been involved in so many “Can Superman Beat Hulk” discussions I’m now qualified to moderate them.
As a matter of fact, I’ll have one of these debates coming in a second. But now I want to turn to some interesting cameos from sci-fi legends in upcoming fighting games.
The fourth installment in long-running fighting game series Soul Calibur will feature Darth Vader on PS3 and Yoda on Xbox 360. Star Wars fans, in case you haven’t heard, are a little bit passionate about their license. Right now a lot of people like this. It seems just as many think George Lucas will soon be selling Boba Fett adult diapers because he can’t whore the license out any further.
I can see both sides. I’m kind of on the side that thinks this is stupid but I know I’m going to be playing Yoda against my nephews and doing bad Frank Oz impressions.
“Pwned you I did! Hmmm hmm hm! Reset or do not, there is no try.”
In the grand scheme of things, do light sabers and Jedis belong in a game with ninjas and nunchuks? Not logically. Yeah, I know Star Wars is long ago and in a galaxy far away so in theory it could be written. Heck, there’s probably a novelization on the way anyhow. Every time you blink, three Star Wars novels spontaneously generate at Barnes and Noble.
Maybe I’m bitter because instead of shoehorning Star Wars characters into an existing fighting game, I’d rather someone do a good Star Wars fighting game. Anyone remember Masters of Teras Kasi? That was a debacle second only to the newest trilogy.
That game, done well, would break all sales records. I don’t see the rationale against doing it now. You’ve already sold out the two most important characters in the franchise. What do our loyal readers think? Will you be buying either of these games? Those that own both consoles, will you pick up both versions?
Am I forgetting that the purpose of fighting games, or any other game, is to have fun? Well, except for Jenga. The point of that is - unfathomable boredom, apparently.

The Last Starfighter! Oh, that’s…Oh, that’s funny, that’s good;)
These Tie-Ins maybe nonsense to us SW & fighting game fans/geeks…Then again, as you’ve pointed out (Brian) in other articles–It’s all about Merchandising. (To use a fav Mel Brooks line from “SpaceBalls”.) Who knows, Lucas may be a video-game fan & like the Soul Calibur franchise. He’s mentioned about playing games w/his kids on some interviews in the past.
Personally, Soul Calibur 4 will definitely be part of my PS3 collection to which playing many hrs of my wife & I will. (Incidentally, that’s what cool about her–she loves fighting games.) She kicks my butt on every match w/Taki when I play my fav char. I end up having 2 switch 2 my alternates in order to beat her.
Speaking of B&N, I noticed that esteemed sci-fi writer–Kevin J Anderson–has written some novels based on the “Metal Gear Solid” license when I use perusing BAMM the other day. Not only “MGS”, but I also saw some “Halo” stories there too. Apparently, it’s all about the dollah bill y’all to these major corps–Capitalism, it’s Fantastic!

No…I just got a PS3 game that’s much cooler in my book–The Bourne Conspiracy! This game is 3rd-person shooter that is so much fun. It gives you a fresh take on the shooter genre w/unique gameplay features during fighting & driving sequences that are just like his style in the movie. And most important you get TO BE Jason Bourne! Apparently, movie-2-game works better than game-2-movie.
Blazing Angels 2 was the other new PS3 game I got last wk. Haven’t had a chance 2 play it much because I’ve been hooked on Bourne. Now I’m in the wait & save mode till Ghostbusters, Incredible Hulk & Soul Calibur 2 come out.
Speaking of which, there’s a section for other entertainment media on this fantastic & fresh SciFi fan site, why don’t you have a “games” section?

John, this month’s _Game Informer_ mag gave an average review of the new LEGO Indy game that’s been released…They said something like, the LEGO adaptation of Indiana Jones characters & elements just doesn’t serve as well as SW or the upcoming Batman franchise…Because the players just want to be Indy.
