Hulk Rocks Weekend Box Office

June 16, 2008 by brian

Incredible Hulk The word from critics as well as thousands of moviegoers over the weekend was that Marvel’s Incredible Hulk is a blockbuster. The Hulk pulled in $55 million over the weekend, easily seizing the no.1 spot from last week’s champ, Kung Fu Panda.

That’s two straight hits from Marvel Studios, now setting up a much anticipated Avengers movie with a Nick Fury cameo in Iron Man and a Tony Stark appearance in Hulk. Although I wasn’t exactly clear whether Stark was trying to recruit the Hulk or if that’s the “problem” Stark wants to help with.

M. Night’s Shyamalan’s latest film The Happening opened in third with $30.5 million. The first R-rated movie from The Sixth Sense director opened to pretty lackluster reviews. Hmm, maybe Marvel could revamp his career by getting him to do a Moon Knight movie.

If I had to guess, it would be the Hulk is the “problem” and the reason Nick & Stark are assembling a team. Which makes sense cause it coincides w/the Ultimates storyline from the comics. Who knows, maybe Marvel is using these subplots w/in the narrative of each hero flick in order to make the concept of “The Avengers” more believable to movie-goers.

On the other side, DC better tap into that vast Warner Bros money vault and step up to the plate. This year’s Marvel challenge & planned releases w/in next 3yrs will be hard to beat. That is, unless they release stuff like Elektra or DareDevil.

“Incredible Hulk” has made over $54mil last wkd according 2 Variety…It was great, much better than Ang Lee’s…What’s more, it was a great tribute 2 the TV-series & Bill Bixby…Even better, were the action scenes…I didn’t think anything was cooler than the tank sequence from Ang Lee’s “Hulk”, BUT the sonic cannons on the college quad were awesome!

Altogether, I give it: B+. The grade ‘A’ still goes to Iron-Man. We’ll see how TDK & Punisher: War Zone score later this year.

Brian, you are so right–thanks 2 the ingenious idea & perfect opportunity that Marvel Studios has done, they can now create a connecting Marvel movie universe. All 2 the benefit of comic fans.

Sonic Cannons are awesome. I would love to see a superhero w/ sound powers become top tier. Maybe I’ll have to write one.

  4. Rhyno says:

DC already has one — Black Canary.
