Introducing Primeval

by Cynthia on July 25th, 2008

It’s “Jurassic Park” as a weekly series. BBC America would like to introduce you to “Primeval.”

Primeval_01 Unexplained anomalies are ripping holes in the fabric of time, allowing creatures from the very earliest stages of Earth’s development to roam the modern world.  Cutter (Douglas Henshall) and his team struggle to keep the looming disaster secret, while dealing with savage dinosaurs and other deadly foes.

Whether it’s a prehistoric predator Gorgonopsid rampaging through the neighborhood, or a swarm of supersized spiders in the subway, Cutter and his team find themselves with some seriously beastly opponents.  Ferocious or endearing, these puzzling creatures all have the same simple fact in common - they don’t belong here.

While Cutter and his team struggle to keep the looming disaster secret, Cutter also has to deal with a deeply personal dilemma when he discovers that his wife, Helen, who disappeared eight years ago, is not dead as he believed, but has been traveling in time. Now she’s back, and can possibly tell him more about the riddle of the anomalies, but is it something she’s willing to share? If not, what does she really want? Why did she come back?

Primeval_02 Cutter, his research assistant Stephen Hart, zoologist Abby Maitland (Hannah Spearritt), and student palaeontologist Connor Temple (Andrew Lee Potts), race to understand what’s happening, while shadowy Government officials James Lester and Claudia Brown, insist they have to keep the danger secret from the public. As the past threatens to invade the present and destroy the future, Cutter’s crew faces a life-and-death race against time.

“For the first time since these beasts actually roamed the Earth, it is possible to imagine and show something of their sheer size and impact, and in Primeval that is what we have set out to do,” say creators Tim Haines (Walking with Dinosaurs) and Adrian Hodges (Rome, The Lost World). “But, at the same time, we passionately believe that the best special effects in the world mean little unless they are coupled to an exciting and compelling human story. Our series is as much, or more, about the people who come into contact with our creatures as it is about the beasts themselves. This is a story about all kinds of human emotions – grief, love, laughter, fear and courage – and each of our principal characters has a long journey to go on.”

Primeval premieres Saturday, August 9, 9:00 pm on BBC America.

Spoilers for those who haven’t watched episode six of series one…

I was a fan of series one - but lost interst for series two as they keep killing main / major characters at the end of each series. And mine favourite got killed at the end of series one… so much for guys who say they are interested in creating interesting characters - once you like them they kill them for the kick of getting a great cliff hanger so you would watch the next series…. and than you have to know they made the series as a sort of kid show / family show! Plus when fans started to mail in for ask if they would get the character back - its a sciene fction & fantasy series afterall and the second series is set in a different timeline so they could have brough him back - they refused - than they wrote in a character meant to be a clone for both killed characters for series three. As they felt that the character they had ‘removed’ was missing in series two… okay who they are kidding?

Still hope you can enjoy it….
