Alex O’Loughlin Stays with CBS

August 15, 2008 by Cynthia

A number of sources are reporting that Moonlight’s Alex O’Loughlin has signed a talent holding deal with CBS.  What this means is that the network will attempt to develop a new series for Alex and /or cast him in another project.  Obviously, the first of the two would be the better option, but fans are saying why not just bring back Moonlight?  Since Alex was the show, why bother creating something new when something old will do?

As much as I love Moonlight, I’m happy to see Alex sticking around for another shot at anything on TV. Too often actors get one go of it and that’s the end of that. I could totally handle him as a PI in a 40’s Noir drama, or maybe as a lifeguard in a Baywatch remake (I’m going for the ’shirt off’ aspect.)  What ever it is, I hope it’s action packed and I hope its soon.

I’m so thrilled for Alex and for his fans! As his agent said, he’s got to strike while the iron’s hot! It’s a critical time for him! This “talent holding” deal has got to be a huge boost not only for his future marketability, but for his confidence as well! Way to go Alex! You deserve the best! Can’t wait to see ya! It’s been too long. :(

    Hey Cynthia ~

I have missed having Alex in my home every week…. even tho it was only on my tv. ;> You are right, the first option would be much better. I really want Alex to have his own show. Hopefully, CBS won’t stick him into some ensemble cast or pre-existing series. He deserves to have a show created just for him.

Thank you for writing about this!

I’m also very pleased for Alex, when they call it “talent holding deal” they certainly got that right I can’t wait to see him back on screen.

  4. Sheila says:

I am so very happy for Alex. He is a great actor and I hope they create a fabulous roll for him. Action packed and lots of romance. Can’t wait to hear when and where. It couldn’t be too soon. I miss him a lot. Alex, I wish you the best of luck and success always.

  5. Silverchex says:

We all knew Alex was looking for more work. I hope he succeeds in all that he does. While we will miss Moonlight I hope they will give him a good script that will be worthy of his talent…

  6. bgcfitness says:

I am very pleased for Alex. He certainly has the talent to succeed in any undertaking. I do take issue, however with the idea that he WAS Moonlight. That show was an amazing combination of a great story, beautifully filmed, and with a cast that had great chemistry. Alex was the central character, but it was all of those things that made Moonlight so very special. First choice for me? Bring back Moonlight! Second choice give Alex something that is of similar quality. I would hate to see him in something that is a poor imitation of Moonlight

  7. Cynthia says:

bgcfitness, no insult intended to anyone else involved in the show, but Moonlight is the kind of series dependent on the lead actor. If they had cast someone without the charisma the show would have failed even faster, regardless of the writing or supporting cast.

I say this as opposed to a Grey’s or ER where you can lose a lead and still have the show work.

  8. SHARON says:

I AM SO EXCITED THAT CBS HAS OFFERED ALEX A PART AGAIN, IN A TV SERIES. I ALSO WISH THEY WOULD BRING MOONLIGHT BACK WITH THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL CAST, BUT IF NOT, THEN HE DESERVES A MAJOR ROLE/LEAD ROLE OF HIS OWN IN A DRAMA. NO MEDICAL SHOWS OR BAYWATCH TYPE ROLES, AS IT WOULD BE AN INSULT TO HIS INTELLIGENCE AS AN ACTOR!

  9. SHARIEJD says:

DOESN’T ANYONE OR ANY NETWORK UNDERSTAND, THAT ALEX IS MOONLIGHT, HE CREATED THE BOND BETWEEN MICK ST. JOHN AND THE FANS. THE FANS WANT AND DEMAND MOONLIGHT, THERE IS STILL SO MUCH BETWEEN MICK AND BETH AND JASON, THAT IT CAN’T END THE WAY THAT IT DID, MY GOD THE STORLINES COULD BE ENDLESS. DON’T FIX SOMETHING THAT’S WORKING, AND WITH EVERY EPISODE THE FAN BASE WAS GROWING, MOONLIGHT WAS THE SECOND RANKED SHOW FOR STABILITY FROM VIEWERS, AND THE VIEWERS WERE FROM ALL AGES, AND IT WAS A PRIME TIME FAMILY SHOW. NO ONE HAS CLUE WHAT THIS SHOW MEANS TO ITS FANS, AND WHAT THE SHOW IS TRUELY ABOUT. ALEX HAS PUT HIS HEART AND SOUL INTO THE CREATION OF MICK ST. JOHN, AND AS A RESULT, HE HAS BECOME THE GREATEST VAMPIRE IN HISTORY OF FILMS AND TV. WHY NOT BRING MOONLIGHT BACK AFTER ALL ITS THE PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD WINNER. AND ALEX SHOULD HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE TO SHOW HOW GREAT THIS SHOW IS. WHAT MORE DO THE FANS HAVE TO DO TO PROVE THEIR LOYALITY AND DETERMINATION TO SAVE IT NO MATTER HOW LONG OR WHAT IT TAKES TO GET OUR BELOVE MOONLIGHT AND MICK BACK. MOONLIGHT FAN 4 EVER.

  10. Mandy says:

Cynthia, thank you on the explanation of why you considered Alex ‘was’ Moonlight. As much as I loved the other characters and the romantic story, I tend to agree with you. It wasn’t an ensemble show.

My greatest fear as an Alex fan was that he would end up in one of these type of shows, where he has reduced screen time. I know he can (and should) carry a show. My hope is that CBS knows this too.

Action and romance would be my ideal choice and hopefully nothing too procedural that has science or plots as the star and the actors are only there to deliver those aspects to the audience. Alex is a master in the art of nuanced performance and really deserves a terrific character role.

  11. Valerie says:

Congratulations to Alex for his good fortune. I still think Moonlight has it all, the action, the romance, the cast with great chemistry. People get all hung up with it being a vampire genre show when that was the least of it. Why try to create all that when ML has ‘it’. The fans are still calling for more Moonlight. Why not just try that. Season Two it’s perfect.

  12. wpgrace says:

I am delighted that we will get to see Alex on tv again, hopefully in the not-too-distant future, but I do hope he got something in his new contract to make the network actually promote his new show, other than just by showing ads for it during Ghost Whisperer…He can definitely carry the lead, and has proven that, but as far as casting him as a PI in a 40s noir piece, honey did you never see Moonlight? You’re talking about Mick ST. John, which he played perfectly…and I know you’re kidding about the Baywatch, but euw!

  13. mntngrl says:

Lifeguard in a Baywatch remake – that was totally a joke I hope – how insulting. Alex is major “serious acting project” material – not just gorgeous

  14. Melissa says:

While I’m happy for Alex, I agree with the others who have posted “Why not just bring back Moonlight?” He has made it very clear in interviews that he loves his character and the show. Furthermore, if you visit http://www.moonlightline.com you find that Moonlight has become a world wide addiction. People from Europe and South America are now campaigning. Nina Tassler and CBS made a really poor decision. Vampire Solidarity Rah! Rah! Rah! and all that

  15. Dreamer says:

At last we have news as to what’s happening next!
I hope it has romance and a little action but ultimately I hope it’s a success, for Alex’s sake and for the fans’ sake; I don’t want this thrill ride to end.

  16. tagrhm says:

While I”m glad Alex has a job, he has to eat, I will not be following him back to CBS. CBS has blantantly put down fans of the show and now are foolish enough to believe that the other talented actors such as Sophia Myles and Jason Dohring had little or nothing to do with the show’s passionate fan base. I fell in love with Moonlight because of the electrifying romance between Mick and Beth. A romance takes 2 to work, and Sophia Myles was magnificate as Beth Turner. Jason Dohring turned a selfish playboy into a character you care for and want to see each week. The show was Moonlight not Alexlight. If CBS wants me back they’ll need to at least give us a Moonlight TV movie providing a more satisfying ending to one of the best romance in decades.

  17. Terry says:

Moonlight did not fail. It was canceled after winning the People’s Choice Best New Drama and winning its Friday night time slot each week – A dead zone time slot especially for a new show in a broken season. It was never promoted as a romantic love story which is definitely is. I think Alex is a terrific actor and to think of him cast in some Baywatch role just because he is pretty is a really sad thought – or one of the endless crime shows. He is a wonderful dramatic actor who also does humor well and whatever he does after Moonlight, it needs to showcase his talent like Mary Bryant and Moonlight did. CBS has an amazing vampire with a huge fan base on the eve of a vampire explosion and they want to cast him as a mortal?

  18. Lindy says:

It’s good to see Alex O’Loughlin’s talent validated by the CBS agreement which gives him at least some creative input into what comes next. I truly believe we’re watching a star develop right in front of us. What would I like to see? Well…Moonlight! If CBS wants a quality vehicle to show off their star…they HAD one! But whatever comes next for Alex, I certainly hope it’s of the quality and caliber fitting such a talented gentleman.

  19. Claudia says:

It’s SO great to know that we will be seeing Alex on our screens again soon! I hope this is really good for him. I know he will be great in anything he does next.
And as a passionate Moonlight fan, I will continue, as many, many more fans, asking for Moonlight back. Somebody wii eventually listen.

  20. LisaS says:

I’m happy for Alex because he is at least going to be getting paid no matter what and that is a good thing. This deal could actually work for us Moonlight Fans but it’s still to early to tell at this point.

Moonlight Fans are still out here fighting for our show’s return with the entire cast & crew intact.

If Nina Tassler, CBS and all of the bloggers & journalists think for one minute that this going to placate fans then I’m sorry to say you all thought wrong because it most certainly won’t.

The only way we are going to be happy is by one of three things either we get Moonlight’s return to network televison for a Well Deserved Second Season which by the way it earned despite the writers strike with the ENTIRE CAST & CREW INTACT. Or at the very least we get Moonlight Mini-Series’ or Moonlight Movies. The main thing is we get it back in some form.

Nina Tassler said recently that they wanted to win back viewers loyalty & trust. Hey Nina if you really want to win back some 8 Million plus fans then get a clue and really listen to what the fans want and return Moonlight back to the airwaves. Vampires are in, just in case you haven’t heard.

As I just said the Campaign for Moonlight is still on going, we are still writing & sending letters, postcards, emails. We are still hitting the message boards. We are still focused on and committed to continuing the Blood Drives, the Bone Marrow Registry & Donations and all of our charity campaigns & donations to help those less fortunate and in need.

Those in Los Angeles should take notice because the bus ads calling for more Moonlight will be out next week and will be seen all over the LA area.

We are still out here whether you like it or not, we are most definitely not going away and we aren’t backing down.

Can’t wait to see Alex back on TV. I vote for action, lots of fight scene to show off his martial arts skill. His fighting stance is so artisitics.

  22. Carolyn says:

If I get to see Alex O’Loughlin on my TV screen again every week, it just might be time to go buy that big screen “TeeVee!” He’s not only easy to look at, he’s got loads of talent and I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do with this opportunity.

  23. Liana says:

Happy for Alex! He’s a very good actor. But we all miss Moonlight and want it back, because there’s so much left unsaid in Moonlight. It’s a good drama, not just vampire show.
I hope CBS will change their mind and bring our show back, fans deserve the second season or at least mini-series! And I can’t imagine Moonlight without Alex, he played Mick St. John perfectly!

  24. donna gilliam says:

i’am very happy for alex. moonlight displayed his amazing talents. i do feel bad for the other actors. cbs cancel a great show to get their actor-center star alex o’loughlin and they say this is what the fans were all about. the entire cast made that show work and it’s truly missed. i hope alex doesn’t get shafted by them again. they let a great show go where he is already the lead actor to build another show around him. ok! i do wish him much success. cbs didn’t care for moonlight and all of this bull that (cbs)nina tassler has been said just showed that the fans really didn’t matter. cbs got their man and nothing else matters. they(cbs) cancelled a show they felt wasn’t as important as the actor that they wanted. cbs -”we’ll say what we feel is necessary and that will be that”. mr. o’loughlin seemed just as passionate about the show during his promoting pretty much all over the plant. he seem so tired sometimes but he went out there and he worked it. and people have such the nicest thing to say about him that i’ve read. i hope he has success with this one-year talent deal. and i do hate that it’s with cbs. alex, good luck. donna gilliam

  25. Mary Czak says:

I feel it is wonderful news Alex O’Loughlin is going to be cast in another show – he is a very talented actor (just wish it was with any other network besides CBS). But why not just bring back a show so many viewers loved – MOONLIGHT – makes complete sense to me to bring back a beloved show with a super cast & awesome story lines & Alex, of course than to try to make a show for him. Alex was in a great show – bring it back & watch everyone show Nina Tassler (a brainless idiot) along with others from CBS how they had a excellant show but decided to throw that all away. CBS – you could still redeem yourself – correct the hugh mistake you made – bring MOONLIGHT back. Alex, Sophia, Jason & the entire cast are sorely missed!!!!

  26. Caro says:

Thinks are looking good……Alex has been confirmed to a guest spot on CM….can’t wait to get that man back on my TV where he belongs! And a chance to play a bad guy…….every actor loves to play the Bad Guy…..and Alex has done it before! Go get ‘em Alex!

  27. Silverchex says:

I saw I left a comment back in August. Wow alot has happened since then. Now Alex will be doing a guest spot on Criminal Minds in April. I’m sure we will be hearing soon about his upcoming role for the fall lineup…
