Thou Shalt Not Crave Thy Neighbor: True Blood

Vampires. You can shoot them, stab them, cancel them, but they just keep coming back. This time it’s in the form of True Blood, the new series on HBO. The series, which premieres on September 7, is based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris and despite the show begin about vampires, it’s really more Nora Roberts than Stephen King. There will be sex and it will be graphic. Or wait, maybe it’s more Alien Nation than Angel, due to the counter culture trying to assimilate premise. Actually, it’s more Buffy than Bones, because even though it’s a mystery, the lead is a waitress with telepathic abilities and a snarky sense of humor.
It’s a mishmash is what it is, created by Allan Ball of Six Feet Under and co-produced by Supernatural’s Raelle Tucker, it’s all tied together with that pay cable twist which means it can get totally raunchy and still air in primetime.
I’m ready to like this show except for one big problem — the lead character and the voices in her head. And yeah, that’s a big problem to get over. Guess we’ll see how it goes when True Blood hits the small screen in just a few weeks. In the meantime, here’s what you need to get started:
Episode 1: “Strange Love”:
Air Date: September 7 on HBO
Across the country, vampires have come “out of the coffin” after the invention of mass-produced synthetic blood. In Louisiana, Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress with telepathic abilities, falls under the spell of a sexy, 173-year-old vampire named Bill Compton – whose thoughts she can’t read. After saving Bill from the Rattrays, a pair of ruthless “vampire drainers,” Sookie tests the limits of Bill’s gratitude when the two are left alone in the dark. Meanwhile, Sookie’s best friend Tara quits one job to work for Sam Merlotte at his bar and grill, and Sookie’s roguish brother Jason finds himself in hot water when a “fangbanger” with whom he’s been intimate meets a tragic end.
