Let’s Call it Stargate: SVU

by Cynthia on August 22nd, 2008

Right_Cooper_Stargate Law & Order did it.  CSI did it and now Stargate is doing it.  On the heels of announcing the end of Stargate Atlantis, SCI FI Channel has announced the arrival of “Stargate Universe,” a NEW weekly series based on the popular franchise.

So in other words, let’s dump the characters we already know and love and start all over again, again. And doesn’t the premise sound strangely familiar?

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate’s ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny’s original mission.  Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship’s navigational schedule.  If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

Didn’t we just see that on Atlantis? “The Daedalus Variations?” Trapped on a ship with no way to go home, never knowing when you’re going to jump to a new place? On the upside, it does open up a whole realm of possibilities since they won’t be grounded in one place, but for me it will be the casting that will make or break it.

Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and who both currently serve as executive producers on Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

They said, and I quote:

“In ‘Universe,’ we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humor, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping off point for telling stories.”

Young and desperate?  Thrust together? Sounds like a spacey version of Gossip Girl.

Okay, I’ll give it a shot because these guys haven’t steered me wrong yet.  And knowing this franchise as I do, it’s likely that the desperate souls of SVU (Stargate Victims Universe) will land on Atlantis at least once.

Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI. Following its premiere, Universe will assume a regular hourly slot in Summer 2009.

    Ianiv,

You beat me to the Voyager reference. Can someone explain to me how Kate Janeway got her crew “Lost in Space” for nearly a decade and got a promotion to admiral?

Shut up, shut up, shut up! Sex, sex sex, must get sex into it.

    Wait,I see a television commercial-

There’s this nude woman in a bath holding a a dialing device.

That needs a doctor, got to have a medical opinion.

There’s a nude woman in a bath with a doctor–that’s too sexy. And Kaylee, I mean Keller, didn’t work with Rhonan or Rodney anyway. Put an archbishop there watching them, that’ll take the curse off it. Now, we need children and animals… Let’s dial the gate and… (source: http://www.skepticfiles.org/en001/monty16.htm)

Yes, Jewel Staite needs to be on my television as much as possible. Somebody find her a spot on Stargate SVU.
