Supernatural Season 3 DVD: Review

by Cynthia on September 3rd, 2008

Supernatural_3_DVD I found a surprise waiting for me on my desk this morning; Supernatural Season 3 DVD set WITH a die-cast Impala. Yes, my husband braved the morning and was one of the first people at the Best Buy so he could snag one for me.

I love the car. It has the proper season license plate and on the bottom it says Supernatural so one day when it turns up in a box of old toys people will know that it was a collectible!

My joy ends there.

I know there was a writer’s strike, but seriously, this is a poor excuse for a box set. There’s a gag reel which is always fun the way our boys do it. There’s a special effects featurette that really takes you behind the scenes of the show and there’s a very short featurette on the Impala.

In addition, several of the episodes have these mini-featurettes which has one of the production team discussing the thought behind a particular idea of scene.  Kripke talks about how becoming a father caused him to write evil changelings, Ben Edlund bemoans how tough it is to put female characters on the show and Kim Manners talks about cracking a ceiling in The Magnificent Seven.  All great stories but they’re not commentaries.  Nope, not a single commentary anywhere to be found on this set. It makes me want to cry. Commentaries are my favorite things on DVDs.

Add to that not much additional Jared and Jensen.  Sure we get glimpses of them in the featurettes and on the gag reel but nothing more.  (Granted, I haven’t watched all of the episode closer looks but I’m doubtful. . . )

You would have thought, knowing that they were short on episodes, they would have made the effort to do longer features.  At least give us more of the boys!

Come on Warner Brothers, start filming those extras for next year now.  Get Jensen to give you a ride-along in the Impala.  Have Jared invite us in for lunch. Yes, we love Supernatural for the plot, the clever dialogue, the wonderful cinematography and the cool special effects but we love our Winchester Brothers even more.
