So, Who Should Be Captain America?

September 10, 2008 by brian

Captain America Boy, Marvel quashed that Will Smith/Captain America rumor faster than Cap could show 10 Hydra agents the business end of his mighty shield. Ain’t It Cool News said all their Marvel contacts think Derek Luke is completely wrong on that one.

But I don’t know Luke well enough to say whether he was talking out of his head or not. Maybe Marvel just kicked the idea around and took no action on it. We will likely never know. But to keep up with the auspicious schedule Marvel has announced, targeting an Avengers movie for 2011, they need to get crackin’ on a Captain America movie. He is, after all, the First Avenger.

And somebody has to be the Living Legend of World War II. Actors’ names bandied about include Matthew McConaughey, Leonardo Dicaprio and even Torchwood’s John Barrowman. This leaves us with several questions. Was Will Smith just a crazy rumor that got out of hand? How many of the Sentinel of Liberty’s nicknames can a Marvel fanboy shoehorn into a single post? And most importantly what actor has the muscle, charisma and acting chops to sling Cap’s shield in a live action film? Who would you cast, readers?

I vote for John Barrowman. He’s made Captain Jack Harkness an iconic character in the Doctor Who/Torchwood verse, so I really feel he’d make the perfect Captain America. He does ‘hero’ extremely well.

  2. 7474 says:

Mario Lopez? He’s got the build and it would be a good chance for him to move up. I just heard some rumors is all…

  3. Jake Lockley says:

I can totally see Barrowman as Cap. He’s got my vote.

  4. KnitChick says:

My vote is for John Barrowman! He’s got that glamourous leading man type of look and he’d make a great Captain America!! :D

  5. Capra says:

I’d love to see John Barrowman in the role, but with his already packed schedule, I doubt he’ll be able to commit to a film of this magnitude. He can’t even commit to a 12 month deal for a West End show, one of his first loves……still, I’d love to see him in the role. He’s got the looks, the charisma, the charm, and the acting chops to pull it off.

  6. Kate says:

Come on John Barrowman is the logical choice. He’s a fantastic actor, he’s got charm, he’s charasmatic, he’s a bit of a media whore so they’d been no problem with publicising it and most importantly, he’s drop dead gorgeous. Also he’s got loads of fans who’d watch the film and buy the merchandise even if they didn’t really care all that much about the film.

  7. Rachel says:

    John Barrowman!!

  8. Angela says:

John would ROCK IT! as Capt. America!

  9. Dj says:

My vote would be for John Barrowman. He’s the right type of character, voice, body for the part.

  10. adafrog says:

John Barrowman, definitely. He’s got the all American hero looks, and is a good actor.

  11. Beth says:

Add my vote to John Barrowman!

  12. Casey says:

John Barrowman of course. He has the charisma, the all American hero looks, the physical attributes and the acting “chopps” to carry this off.

  13. Alan Wilkinson says:

NOT John Barrowman. A British gay man, known for playing a bisexual (Jack Harkness), as the living symbol of America? That’s an impossible sell. Sorry to say it, but Marvel wouldn’t want the G-word anywhere near Cap.

And how many people who voted for John came here from Livejournal, pray tell?

  14. Brian Allen says:

Barrowman would also command a much lower salary than the likes of McConaughey and certainly a Leo Dicaprio.

That frees up more money for Iron Man, Hulk and whatever other Avengers they put into the mix.

  15. blondgrrl says:

I heard Will Smith would do it, but that turned out to be a rumor. To 7474, yeah, Lopez has the build, and good looks but purists may be skeptical. Barrowman? Eh… I think there might be better.

  16. Thrace Adams says:

Just for information sake, John Barrowman is Scottish AND American, NOT British. He just works there. And I think he would make a great Captain America, but unfortunately, that will never happen.

  17. Isa says:

I think Jensen Ackles would be perfect.
