Torchwood Season 2 on DVD This Week

As the summer movies begin hitting on DVD, we get a heavy slate of releases this week. DVDTown reports on this week’s DVD entries. The one our readers will likely be most excited about is the second season of BBC TV hit Torchwood. This season includes a three-episode arc starring Freema Agyeman as Doctor Who companion Martha Jones, all thirteen episodes of Torchwood Declassified, and a 22-minute featurette The Life and Deaths of Captain Jack Harkness. There are also 18 minutes of deleted scenes and nine minutes of outtakes.

Fans of classic Star Trek will be in heaven with Alternate Realities, a 5-disc set that features the best “parallel universe” Trek stories. The highlight is of course, “Mirror, Mirror” the episode that sends the classic crew into an alternate reality where torture and assassination are the order of the day. The goatee sported by “Evil Spock” has been parodied by shows ranging from Transformers to South Park.

One of last season’s pleasant, quirky surprises was Pushing Daisies, a show about Ned, a lonely piemaker who can bring the dead back to life with his touch. He uses his powers to solve murders and also brought his boyhood crush back to life. But a second touch will send her back to the land of the dead. Talk about romantic tension.

This week’s high profile movie release is high profile for just how bad it bombed. Speed Racer is out on DVD and this time you can make it more suitable for kids with liberal use of the fast-forward button. At more than two hours, this one probably put much of its pre-teen target audience to sleep. But now you can decide for yourself if the Wachowski Bros. take on classic anime is worth watching.
