Life on Mars 1.02 “The Real Adventures of the Unreal Sam Tyler” Recap
Air Date: Oct. 16,2008
Sam is still having dreams of Maya, his girlfriend in 2008. Can you blame him? Lisa Bonet is still quite hot. But he still wakes up in 1973, with a bathroom shared with the rest of the building denizens including a naked hippie named Windy.
Cops from the 125 catch an armed robbery suspect named Kim Trent. That master of innovative interview tactics Lt. Hunt throws Kim into a lake, but the suspect can’t swim. It of course falls to Sam to dive in and save Kim, who punches Sam in the face for his trouble. In spite of Hunt’s unique tactics, Kim isn’t giving up any info about a recent string of robberies at AAA Check Cashing places.
Hunt’s got even more problems as 125th precinct assistant June tells him the assistant district attorney wants to see him. Gee, can’t imagine why a clean cop like Hunt would be on their radar. ADA Lee Crocker tells them they don’t have enough evidence to hold Kim and Sam’s in agreement. Hunt suggests they plant some and Sam is mortified.
Sam prefers releasing Kim and following him. Hunt reluctantly agrees and tells Sam things are on his head if it doesn’t work. As they let Kim out, Sam sees a strange robotic device. This causes him to even further question his grip on sanity. Chris and Ray agree to take the first watch on Kim, with Sam and Hunt relieving them the next day.
When Sam and Hunt arrive to relieve Chris and Ray, they’re not there. Word about another AAA robbery comes over the radio so Sam and Hunt race to the scene. Kim shoots at them and Hunt returns fire killing Kim. After the shootout they find June, who’s been shot. Sam finds two cops who tell him an employee’s been hurt. Annie wonders why June was at the crime scene with a police radio.
Hunt blames Sam for this entire mess and they scrap, Sam still trying to understand why he is where, or rather when, he is. After a visit to the check cashing place Sam sees a woman watching from her apartment. He talks to her and she tells him cops come to the AAA every Tuesday and Thursday to keep the money safe.
Sam goes to June’s hospital room where Hunt is. Hunt and Sam get into two more scuffles in the hospital room. Too much testosterone, guys. In the midst of all this there is some talking and Hunt actually admits June would be a good cop if not for being a woman in 1973.
Sam talks to Ray, who has worked security for AAA before. Ray suggests Sam take the case straight to Crocker, since Hunt won’t do anything about alleged dirty cops. After Sam has a clandestine meeting with Lee, the mysterious robotic thing appears again.
The next day, Sam goes to work and finds out Hunt knows about the meeting with Crocker. When Hunt slams the door in Sam’s face, there’s a reflection of Sam’s life in 2008. Suddenly he realizes the key to this case: the cops at the AAA weren’t real cops!
The other big break comes from questioning June, who it turns out gave Kim info and police uniforms. Annie can’t believe it as she thought June wanted to be in the Bureau of Policewomen. June has seen the way the men at the precinct treat Annie and doesn’t want any part of it.
Sam goes to track down the fake cops and he chases one of them down, another policeman calls for backup. But with Sam in plain clothes and the suspect in uniform, it’s Sam who gets mauled by the cops. The fake tries to run but Hunt busts him up before instructing the other officers to let Sam go.
In the shipping terminal where all this went down, officers find boxes of toys that look just like the machine Sam has been seeing all episode. That night on the fire escape, Sam hears Maya’s voice saying she misses him. Windy shows up and dances with Sam as he wonders just what in his life is real.

Are all women named WINDY strange? another good episode love the ’70s police work. Did you know that there is a sequel to ” Life on mars” it is called “Ashes to ashes” with the gene hunt character in the ’80s. Breakout pastels and linens.
