Supernatural Wishful Thinking First Look

November 4, 2008 by Cynthia

This week wishes come true on Supernatural. . . hey now, not those kinds of wishes. . here’s how Kripke described it when we met up at Comic Con.

“We just came up with this episode; Ben Edlund is writing it, it’s like insane on a level that is even for us insane, where a town has a wishing well and everyone’s wishes are coming true. There may or may not be a seven-foot-tall, talking teddy bear in it, we’re not sure yet.”

But a wishing well wasn’t exactly what Edlund had in mind when he first pitched the story.

“All I want to do is get a fish that grants wishes,” he said when we spoke back at Comic Con. “I’ve pitched that like seven times. This fish is like a proto-demon and every time it grants a wish you see a close-up of its face and see I’m pitching it to you now.”

As enthused as Ben was with his wishing fish, Kripke didn’t share the love likely for the same reason we’ll never see a chupacabra.

“Dude, we can’t afford a chupacabra unless the chupacabra looks like a person who says, ‘I’m a chupacabra,’” said Kripke at Comic Con. “We learned really early, after the wendigo episode, don’t mount creatures you can’t afford to produce. They’re just gonna look stupid. Better to have them in human form and then they have fangs and eyes or whatever and have it be done well. Do it well or don’t do it, is the plan. That’s why there have been no chupacabras, that’s why our werewolves have yellow eyes and fangs and are otherwise human. Every so often there’s off camera references to the chupacabra two states over and that’s where’ll they live.”

There will, however, be giant Teddy bears. Check out this clip from this week’s episode of Supernatural courtesy of our friends at The CW.

The boys faces in this scene are priceless!

  2. Renate says:

OK, I don’t care how many fun episodes come all in a row! I love those faces! And it looks kinda like they wanna crack up cuz that girl is sooo cute! Teddy bear doctors!

  3. Renate says:

Hey, Jellicle! Where did you get your name from? Short for anything? Like “angelical” or something else? Just curious. And it’s probably gonna kill me at some point! lol

  4. suz says:

ROTFLMAO!!!!! Teddy Bear doctors! The only thing that would make it better would be a bloody, teddy bear massacre. :-)

Thank you, Cynthia. You help me survive the long wait till Thursday.

Seriously? Ok, call me a cynic, but I have some reservations about yet another “funny” episode. There is a big difference between the “serious” episodes which have bits of humor mixed in (which is the majority of SN episodes), the “funny” episodes like Hell House or Monster Movie ocassionally thrown in, and the episodes which can’t make up their mind about being serious or funny like Yellow Fever. Of course, we won’t know what Wishful Thinking is until we see it.

This season has presented some very intriguing and serious topics that need to be addressed, the least of which are what happened to Dean in hell and what did Sam do during those 4 months without Dean. Let’s get to them already! As fun as the “comedic” episodes are, I’ve had enough of them now with MoMo and YF back-to-back to last all season!

And I’m glad Kripke isn’t buying into Edlund’s wacky idea this time. A wish-granting demon-fish?! Seriously? riiiiiight… Almost as bad as his “all demons were once human”. Perhaps someone should kindly remind Mr. Edlund that this is Supernatural and not Reaper! >:((

I’m going to cross my fingers and hope that this is a serious episode sprinkled with funny moments and not another “comedic” stand-alone episode.

    To be fair mousitsa
Monster movie was supposed to be episode 3 until the network switched it round,
If you watch it in the order it was originally going to be aired you’ll see that the 2 comedic episodes are nicey sandwiched inbetween some heavier ones.
I am loving this season so far and I have faith that Kripke and the writers will come through for us again. So in the meantime, I’m gona sit back and enjoy.
Also, This episode looks so good. Their faces were priceless!!

  8. Em says:

I think Mousista’s right, 3 comedy episodes in 8 episodes is overboard. They should have comedy episodes 2 or tops 3 times a season, not 3 times in the firt 8 eight episodes.

  9. Tavore says:

Wait , maybe in the end this episode won’t be that funny , and anyway , the two next episodes are going to be full of angst and be heartbreaking …

  10. shelby02 says:

I agree with Mousitsa and Em. Three out of eight is overload. I wish the show would focus on telling us what happened to Sam and Dean during the 4 months Dean was in hell. Get on with it already!

  11. Tamara Shaw says:

Teddy Bear Doctors? Hmmm….I think my teddy bear is sick……
    Can’t wait!!

  12. Tavore says:

Next week Sammy will tell what he did during four months and in two weeks it’s going to be Dean , just enjoy ‘Wishful Thinking’ , maybe it’ll surprise you !

  13. Ebbtide says:

“Teddy Bear Doctors” Awwwwwwww. *Melts*. I want one of those. lol. Dr. Sam Winchester, T.B.M.D. :P . lol.

OMGosh! There are already “Teddy Bear Doctor SN” shirts over on zazzle! Heehee. :D .

  14. Ebbtide says:

As for the “overload” of SN comedy episodes. I think that YF was a very serious one…I think they have equal parts serious and comedy. It’s a refreshing change from the last three seasons where there was one *maybe two* funny episodes a season. Things are getting darker this year, I’ll take all the light-hearted scenes and lines I can get! :) . Thanks, sfuniverse, for keeping us fans informed! Peace.

Finally, someone else gets the jellicle/angelical connection.
