Someone found Lucifer’s sword and is using it to kill angels.  Castiel (Misha Collins) and Uriel (guest star Robert Wisdom) have captured Alastair (guest star Christopher Heyerdahl) and ask Dean (Jensen Ackles) to use the torturing skills he learned in Hell to extract information from him so they can stop the murders.  Sam (Jared Padalecki) is concerned Dean can’t handle the job but Dean agrees to do it.  However, when Alastair reveals some shocking information, Dean’s world is shattered.  Mike Rohl directed the episode written by Ben Edlund (#3T7516).

  1. Kay says:

    Thanks for posting these pictures.

There really are no surprises here. Instead of Sam and Dean fighting evil, we have Dean and Castiel fighting Sam. Sure to be followed by Castiel and Dean patching each other up in the motel room. I can only imagine the abundance of hurt and comfort Dean/Castiel fiction it will generate.

MY husband, who is totally uninvolved in the Supernatural fandom (just a regular viewer), won’t even watch anymore and it used to be the show we most looked forward to each week. He thinks the whole angel storyline is “ridiculous” and longs for the days of urban legends and rock music. I have been hanging on for dear life hoping it might all come together somehow but it is definitely time to throw in the towel. At least I have the first three season DVD sets to help me reminisce about the show supernatural used to be.

  2. Tash says:

Thanks for posting. Just from looking at these pics you would think this is a show about Castiel and a couple of other guys lol. Lets hope these pics are not an indication of how Castiel heavy this episode is. He is easy on the eyes though, but not as much as our boys are.

  3. Cynthia says:

Kay, as perplexing as this will sound, I love Castiel, but I too really miss the days of urban legends and rock music. That first season still rocks my boat.

  4. tina says:

Thanks for posting , Dean looks not good poor guy.
    Sammy looks gorgeous and brooding.

  5. cassi says:

WOW!!!!! finally!!! promo pics with CAS!!!
    thanks!!!!

  6. Ali says:

Ugh. Useless Dean and Super!Sam, huh? Just what I needed to perk up my Thursday afternoon. Hopefully this is better than it looks, because right now, it looks like a steaming pile of “Only superpowered people are useful in this war, and everyone else must lie prone on the floor and worship their awesomeness.”

  7. Shellz says:

    OMG BOYS!
    *freaks out*
    x

  8. Stephanie says:

Am I missing something? I thought I haven’t seen Castiel since “Heaven and hell” which was Episode 10. Why are you bickering about a episode you haven’t even seen yet?

  9. Lisa says:

Kay said: “There really are no surprises here. Instead of Sam and Dean fighting evil, we have Dean and Castiel fighting Sam.”

Dean and Castiel are fighting against Sam? Where? Sam is the only one who doesn’t look battered and bloody in these pictures.

Kay also said “He thinks the whole angel storyline is “ridiculous” and longs for the days of urban legends and rock music.”

As soon as it was revealed (in the FIRST season) that Sam was a special boy with special powers, this was no longer a show primarily about “urban legends and rock music.” I don’t see any difference between a mytharc that involves demons only and a mytharc that involves demons *and* angels. I think the introduction of the angels has been terrific for the show. And Misha/Castiel is a great addition.

I do realize that are certain fans (read: Sam-only fans) who preferred the demon-only mytharc because it only involved Sam’s destiny storyline. They were perfectly fine when Dean was just hanging around to the big-brother and to react to Sam’s story and his special destiny. But THIS season we have the angel-demon mytharc and now (finally!) Dean has a place in the show’s mythology. Finally BOTH brothers are of equal importance in the mytharc.

I love this season. It’s a good thing that Lazarus Rising was such a huge ratings success, with Dean being saved from hell, the introduction of Castiel and the angels storyline — because it’s apparently the reason that the CW renewed the show for a 5th season. I’m very excited about the rest of the season and to see how everything unfolds!

  10. Sarah says:

I don’t know. As much as I love the old dynamic with the urban legends and all that stuff I’m glad they’re developing something different and so epic. I may be not entirely in love with this new storyline (angels and demons and the Apocalypse) but overall I’m really pleased with what they’re doing this season. It’s good to have some evolution there, I think that’s why I still love SPN after four years.

This episode looks awesome by the way.

  11. strangeworld says:

Kay you obviously are not looking at the pictures. It seems to me that once again Dean and Castiel are made useless while SuperSam saves the day. Look again, it is Sam that takes care of Alistair while Dean, the weak one, is out on the floor and Castiel has been beat up.

I miss the old days all right. The ones where Dean could actually do something, instead of having Sam, the deus ex machina with his nifty powers save the day every time now.

  12. Emmie says:

Geez talk about Super Sam. So Sam’s going to take on and beat Alastair, while pathetic little Dean ends up beaten on the floor? Oh and Sam does better than the angels too as Castiel clearly ends up bloody as well. That’s utterly ridiculous. It’s not just non-super powered beings need not apply, it’s anyone who isn’t Sam need not apply as Castiel has powers and he doesn’t seem to end up in much better condition than Dean.

Guess what Show, trying to build up Sam by knocking down everyone else doesn’t make me like him any better and doesn’t make me think he’s kick ass. It just makes me think he’s got a stable full of writers doing everything they can to twist things around to make me think so.

If Kay has paid any attention to the promos she’d know that Dean and Castiel are not fighting Sam.

  13. Linda says:

ENOUGH BITCHING ABOUT SAM VS. DEAN CRAP!!

    GOD, THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

  14. jo says:

By the looks of things its going to be Dean and Castiel for the majority of the episode and at the end Sam will come in to save the day. But like always he will be seen as a bad guy because he uses his “evil powers”. However im hoping that its going to be an awesome episode that promotes both brothers as well as Castiel in good ways. There’s always hope

  15. Rachael says:

Wow. Just…wow. Okay, no, there’s more.

After reading these comments, I’m surprised. Most people I talk to (which is a lot) love this season! Sure it’s had it’s pitfalls (*cough*Wishful Thinking*cough*) but the storyline is intriguing. Hell, my (Christian) parents have been against this show for three years. I showed them Lazarus Rising and now they’re hooked!

Point A) Why do you assume Dean and Castiel are up against Sam? Because Sam looks the bloodiest or because you just don’t like Dean getting his own storyline that doesn’t involve Sam?

Point B) Ever since the first five minutes of the series, we’ve known that there was something bigger going on than just urban legends. When it was made known that it was a demon that killed Mary and Jessica, it pretty much sealed the fact that they were going to go in this direction. You think demons just flew out of Sam and Dean’s butts? They come from Hell…which was created by God…who resides in Heaven (or somewhere)…where ANGELS also reside. It would have made less sense if they WOULDN’T have brought in Angels at some point.

Honestly, I think bringing them in at season four was the best idea. Admittedly, the whole Sam/Dean relationship was getting a bit stale because there’s only so many seasons they could do with only that dynamic with a little bit of Bobby on the side. I believe Castiel and the introduction of Angels gave this show a breath of fresh air.

We have a whole new dynamic to work with here. And with that comes a whole new bucket of possibilities. There’s, of course, the Dean/Castiel dynamic. And then there’s the dynamic between Castiel and Uriel and even between Castiel and himself, or what he has been until he met the Winchesters. Not to mention what’s happening with the brothers and where they both fit into this.

I don’t see this as Sam/Ruby and Dean/Castiel. I see this is Sam being led down a dark road by Ruby, Dean trying to work through his own problems so he could stop/save him, and Castiel struggling between his faith in his father and the faith he has in Dean. I believe Castiel will try to help Dean help Sam, if that makes any sense. If the Angels are against Sam, I think Castiel will be more for wanting to save him.

Point C) Why don’t you watch the episode first before getting your panties in a twist? A picture is worth one thousand words, but those thousand words can be anything. So we won’t know for sure until we see how everything plays out.

Though I do wonder what happened. Poor Dean, I take it he’s not having a very good day. And Castiel gets hurt again! You tard, fight back!!! And Sammy’s busting out more mojo!! Yes!! Bring me both Winchesters, a Pam and a Bobby, and maybe even a Uriel on the side :D .

  16. OK says:

Thanks so much for the pictures!

    Cas!!!!!!!!! \o/

That’s all I have to say.

  17. Kay says:

I didn’t realize so many people cared what I thought?

“If Kay has paid any attention to the promos she’d know that Dean and Castiel are not fighting Sam.”

They are not fighting Sam in the pictures. The fight will come after Sam saves them from Alistair by using his evil “special powers”. Like I said Dean and Castiel versus evil Sam.

  18. Tavore says:

I totally agree with Lisa and it seems lately that a part of Supernatural’s fans are really angry aboutr having Cas a little more in the show . The angels etc … Its is sad , it’s like people can’t watch a show without whining about everyhting . Supernatural’s fans , some of them , are really boring lately …

I am happy to see Cas , the pics are always a little misleading . Sammy don’t seem hurt in the pics here , but maybe he’ll be in the end of the ep. who knows ?

Oh yes , people stop whining , enjoy the show or leave !

  19. Isabella says:

Castiel, yay! Dean always looks good all beat up but I was surprised by Castiel, doesn’t he have magical powers that heal his skin and clothes?

Alastair looks really cool. I can’t wait to see this actor’s take on the character.

Sam still looks like an idiot extending his hand out like that.

  20. Jen A. says:

Lisa – as a Sam girl I THANK YOU. I agree completely. Because I am also a Dean girl and a Castiel girl and I think they’re all wonderful.

    I also agree with Rachael.

And most SPN watchers I know LOVE this season!

On a more shallow note, Castiel looks so hot all bloody.

  21. Emmie says:

“They are not fighting Sam in the pictures. The fight will come after Sam saves them from Alistair by using his evil “special powers”. Like I said Dean and Castiel versus evil Sam.”

If you mean in this episode, then no it doesn’t happen like that. Dean’s not fighting anyone after Alistair, he’s lying in a bloody heap on the floor, not soon to recover. Neither do I think is Castiel. If you mean at some point in the future? Who knows, but personally I doubt it. According to Misha’s interviews, Castiel thinks Sam is OK and that’s with 21 episodes filmed or almost filmed. Doesn’t sound to me like he’s going to be fighting him any time soon.

  22. Kay says:

How embarassing, I walked away from the computer and my son nine year old posted my comment before I was done writing or proofreading (I do know the difference between periods and question marks).

Anyhow, I really am not interested in arguing Sam versus Dean or pro-angel versus anti-angel. Yes my husband thinks the angel storyline is “ridiculous” and that is his right. There are some who love it, their right as well. My point in commenting in the first place was to offer feedback as to why we will no longer be watching the show.

Well I don’t doubt there are some tuning in to see the angel storyline there are also some tuning out. We fall into that category. And before anyone argues that the increase in ratings can be attributed to Castiel, I would say that his addition is not the only factor affecting ratings. I am sure some of the ratings increase is due to the new storyline and an awesome season premiere, but I think some of it can be attributed to the hard work of fans who have been relentless online and off trying to get new viewers and media coverage. I also think that Grey’s Anatomy has lost some viewers this year and we have benefited from that.

Whatever the reason, I hope that those who are happy with the way things are going enjoy the rest of this season and the next. I just don’t think that you should try to belittle the genuine opinions of those of us who don’t find the show what we want anymore.

  23. Lane says:

“Guess what Show, trying to build up Sam by knocking down everyone else doesn’t make me like him any better and doesn’t make me think he’s kick ass. It just makes me think he’s got a stable full of writers doing everything they can to twist things around to make me think so.”

Have you watched this season? This show? Kripke shut down Sam’s saving Dean sl so that Dean could be rescued by a pretty angel boy instead, so that Dean could be favored by God and angels, so that Dean could self-righteously piss on his own little brother for doing things he’s done himself. The difference? When Dean did them, they were hard and necessary and he was sparing Sam by doing them. When Sam does them, he’s mean and evil and using bad mojo to get it done. Dean holds the POV on this show, so everything he does looks sympathetic and right. Unless and until this show presents Sam in the same light, the brothers will never be equal.

  24. Louise says:

I love how this season is going. They needed to add something new to the mix after 3-4 years, why not angels? at least they’re bad ass angels who smite people and not the fluffy halo kind. I’m a bit tired of the SuperSam and weak Dean thing thats been going on though. I’m also tired of Sam fans hating on Dean just because he’s got a bit of storyline.

  25. Anon says:

    Dean kicks ass.
    Sam kicks ass.
    Castiel kicks ass.
    Supernatural kicks major ass.

All the bitching and whining needs to stop!

I trust the writers and haven’t been let down!

  26. Angie says:

Since when has Dean’s world NOT been shattered? Same old, same old. I really wish they would move on from the Dean angst. It’s so old it’s growing mold.

  27. Ali says:

Lane, if the show presents it that way, how come they’re always having Dean hit Sam and Sam look at him with the big woobie eyes of pain and not hit back? How come they’re always having Dean accused of being a racist, bigoted jerk, and hunters being accused of FORCING monsters to be what they are in virtually every episode? How come Dean isn’t permitted to make any of the good arguments against using the powers, whereas Sam is allowed to make all the good arguments FOR using them? How come the angels have brought death and destruction, but Saint Ruby is kind and helpful and loves humanity?

Suuuuure, they’re not building up Sam’s position at ALL at the expense of Dean’s. *nods* Whatever you say. And now, by the look of these pics, they’re going to verify that Sam was absolutely right to call Dean weak and pathetic, and to call himself the stronger hunter. Wow, that sure is building up Dean, isn’t it?

  28. Katie says:

Speeking of getting old I am so tired of Super Sam and Dean being shown as week and usless. It is bad enough the show has Sam say things like that but when they actually make it cannon that Sam is better then Dean in every way what are we suppose to take from this show on how they see Dean?

How can Dean be a viable lead hero if they never let him kick ass and do anything and always have him in distress while Sam saves the day? It is bad enough Dean gets bested by Aliaster but it is so redicouls they are making Sam stronger then an Angel how can I take Castiel serisouly if he cannot even kick ass and take on Aliaster?

When will this show stop tearing down Dean to make others look good and I was excited about this episode but I am sad that this is a BE episode becuase I would have thought he would have more respect for Dean then to first show him as a tortuer and then as a week damsil in distress so Sam can save the day.

  29. Angie says:

Katie, now that I’ve read your comment, it makes me wonder if perhaps I’d react better to the Dean angst if he had some kind of manly kick-ass persona backing it up. However, all he seems to do is cry, talk about his feelings, and get his butt kicked. It’d be nice if they paused with the sob story long enough to let him take some action, be the big brother, and save his and Sam’s asses for once.

  30. KaeDee says:

Interesting that people are lamenting the “by-gone” days of the guys hunting urban legends when we just had 4 stand-alone episode with hardly any myth-arc at all. We had a ghost that turned out to be a twisted family, a cursed magician, PLUS a siren! Some might think a degree of perspective is in order.

Anyway, I love the pictures and am SOOO happy Supernatural is back with new episodes! And I’m happy Kripke and Co. aren’t listening to the schizophrenic moods of the fans. lol

  31. cryptonomicon says:

All opinions are fair game as we actually haven’t seen the ep. Just one thing (as a Supernatural fan and a Dean girl with strong love for Sam too), whatever Dean does, wherever his road takes him, he’s never been, he never is and never will be “pathetic” unless today giving up your life and soul for the love of another person and the drive to do the right thing is considered so. Dean is only human, he will make mistakes. But his motives are pure and his actions as a human being are – whatever the consequences and even if wrong – always selfless, and therefore heroic. Heroes don’t know the future and don’t have all the answers. They just act according to heart and conscience. That’s exactly what makes them heroes or in the words of R.W.Emerson: “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.”

  32. Aileen says:

Hot damn! HURT DEAN. Nuff said.

  33. Lauren says:

Who is this person who is not Sam or Dean in the picture?

The photos are fine, if not a bit violent, but a little too “ensemble cast” for my tastes.

  34. Cherry says:

What is WRONG with you people?? This ep looks absofreakinglutely awesome. Enough with the Sam vs Dean ‘who’s got the best story’ crap. Just enjoy the damn show.

  35. ima says:

Looks like Dean is not up for the task and Sammy takes care the matters. OK, but I will still put wait and see attitude.

  36. ima says:

If Sam kill the bad guy its writer’s fault for writing Sam as SuperSam. If Dean being badass its writer’s fault for writing Dean as D-bag. Everybody is in the wrong except Jensen and Dean. Whats going on exactly?

  37. jenny says:

wow you people argue alot!!thankyou to cherry for a nice coment!! geez , chances are , most of you dont know much more about the episode then what you just read , and your already chosing if you like it or not !!from what ive read it going to be a great episode , and the reviews people have givin it are great . and just something for you to know , they have released some deleted scenes from HAH , LR and ITB(all of which season4) , search them up . and , before you decide if this epi will be good, do some other research!!

  38. Morjana says:

Thank you for the photos, especially as Comcast Cable in Sacramento went dark on several channels, including CW, about 5 minutes after Supernatural started. So I didn’t get to see the episode. ACK!

  39. spectre says:

Uhm… The first couple of seasons had Sam being the one who always got beat up and Dean rushing in to save the day… Granted, he got thrown while Sam was choked, but Dean was always the one to save the day.

Season 4, Dean was just saved from Hell, he’s emotional, he’s scarred, he doesn’t know what’s going on… He’s breaking under the pressure. His death really effected Sam and that kicked Sam into high gear… that also stirred up some darker emotions. The brothers have done a role reversal.

Also, I’m a Sam girl… and I in no way am upset over the way the show has included Dean in on the mythology. I love what they’ve done with Dean. He’s Han Solo to Sam’s Luke Skywalker.

Man, supernatural fans sure are testy…

But on a unrelated note; BLOODY CASTIEL! HOT!

  40. galveston says:

This Dean vs. Sam crap is getting old. VERY old and VERY EMBARRASSING. Dean isn’t propped up at the expense of Sam. Sam isn’t propped up at the expense of Dean. They’re *telling a story.* That story doesn’t involve Sam and Dean being apportioned exactly 50 percent of the lines, 50 percent of the scenes, and 50 percent of the ass kicking apiece. That’s not how storytelling works; it’s not about one looking “better” than the other. They’re telling a story, squabbling children. I like Sam, Dean, and Cas. I love this season. Had the characters never grown past the season one monster of the week, throwing one liners at each other I’d be BORED TO TEARS by now. I don’t watch the show because I have a crush on the cute boys. That’s why it’s better than the rest of the CW trash. It’s got a real story. If you want more rock music, complain to Dawn Ostroff. Licensing music takes money and she keeps cutting the budget.

  41. jen01 says:

I too miss the old days which were more light hearted but in the context of the storyline it has to get darker. Arguing about whether Sam or Dean gets more showtime is pointless, the story has to dictate this and so far this season I haven’t been disappointed …it’s one of the few shows can can truly keep you guessing and have your jaw hit the floor with a new twist. Driving me nuts trying to figure out how it will all end though ;)

  42. Melanie says:

I swear to god… the Supernatural fandom is full of the whiniest bunch of individuals. Why I rarely venture into this fandom online, even though it happens to be one of my 3 favorite shows. Some of you guys give the Heroes fandom a run for the title of, “Most Whiny & Ungrateful Fandom” but I still think you edge them out by just a bit.

I’ve been a Supernatural fan from the beginning, and I can say that this season is by far the best season of the show yet. Also, I know I’ll be stoned for saying this, but Castiel quickly became my favorite character from the second he walked into that barn. I’ve always like Misha Collins, so I was ecstatic when I heard he was going to be a recurring guest star on one of my favorite shows. I still like the brothers, definitely a Dean girl instead of Sam… but dammit people, shows need to evolve and change over time… good riddance to you whiners…

  43. Rodrigo says:

Muito louca esta série estou no Brasil e assisto todos os episódios pela internet !!! VLW………

  44. Dean and Castiel look a little down for the count. Sam, considering that you are the only one with a clean shirt, can you maybe patch them up a bit while you are standing there looking pretty?

  45. jenny says:

THANK YOU GALVESTON!!!! your so right !! okay , melanie ,wow ive been a fan since the begining to (well since asylum-first ep i saw) and i love the show !! its getting better and better every season , and i love the angels as a part of the show . im also a big cas fan , but dont search up his part on niptuck….. SCAREDFORLIFE!! …..! id also like to add that yes you fans are very whiny !! uhha, i did just go there ! one thing is though ive never been on any other fansites so im not sure if its just us shotgunners, or if other shows have this many insane fans . ill try lost after , that being the only other show that id even watch (and no , since its supernatural competition i never watch them right off tv when there new(dont what to give spn more problems).
id say im bi-bro , so im not gonna pick a side here but really , i like it that there giving dean a chance in the big story line instead of it being sam did this , sam did that , dean come save me. and so far i like the dean story line best of all
keep up the good job to all you dean writers out there!!

  46. jenny says:

and yes that was alot of spelling mistakes . result of rushing a comment:o

  47. Sinead says:

First off, why do so many people bitch when the show isn’t just Dean and Sam? They need some other interesting characters to keep the plot flowing. If it were just Dean and Sam vs some demon every episode it would get old fast. We knew Sam had demon mojo, it was obvious something dark would happen there. If there is a Hell, then it only figures that there’s also a Heaven. I love this season, its my favourite one so far.

Now, that being said, YAY! Castiel! Looks like he’ll finally have more than just a few minutes! \o/ I’m also looking forward to Dean torturing Alastair ;)

  48. Alison says:

I love how this season is turning out!! The whole angel thing and Sam slowly turning evil-ish. The only thing I hate though is, Sam and Dean are barley brothers anymore!!! They don’t even trust each other!! It makes me so sad!!! :( :(

  49. Luke says:

I still love the old urban legend and rock music stuff, and I think they need to put it in there. But right now we have a more complex plot with both brother have a seperate story. It is getting more emotional for both of them, and it is getting more and more complex.

I just don’t want to see Sam leading an army of demons, and Dean an army of angels. All of a sudden the armies clash together, and war breaks loose. I don’t want to see that. That would get kinda stupid.

  50. PM says:

Although the urban legends & rock music shows were awesome, the apocolyptic ones are way better and more deep. They are E P I C!
Imagine how creative the porducers must be to have thought up of such a brilliant plotline.
Honestly, I have never ever seen another show as brilliant as Supernatural.
