Caprica Joins the United Nations
March 17, 2009 by Cynthia
Today was an unusual day at the United Nations building in New York City. In addition to all the usual nations represented, delegates from Caprica were on hand to address issues of human rights, terrorism and religious extremism.
Though it may seem like the perfect setting in which to film an episode of the Battlestar Galactica spin-off Caprica, this meeting at the U. N. was for real. Mary McDonnell, Edward James Olmos and Galactica’s creators sat down with representatives from the United Nations’ offices of the secretary general and high commissioner for human rights for a panel discussion. It was all part of the new Creative Community Outreach Initiative designed to partner with the entertainment industry to spread the word about the U.N. and the good work they do.
NBC Universal partnered with ThinkQuest NY to choose the 100 students that attended the event. The students from grades 9-12 were asked to prepare questions so that they could fully particpate in the event and Whoopi Goldberg was on hand to moderate.

the U.N> had nothing better to do but talk to actors and the creative talent
John, normally, I’d be right behind you on that – but if this is what it takes to get students interested in discussing the world’s issues, then I’m all for it.
