Doctor Who Tops List of Sci-Fi Songs

dr_who_bbc_01 One of the most overlooked but important aspects of our favorite shows is the music that leads into them. Total Scifi Online took a poll asking its readers what their favorite themes were and the otherworldly opening song from Doctor Who emerged as the winner.

Other popular tunes include The X-Files and Star Trek. The complete Top 10 list is after the jump:

The Doctor’s theme has a rather interesting origin story. Composer Ron Grainer came up with the theme and Delia Derbyshire produced it by combining a tape loop of a struck piano with white noise created by filters and test oscillators. It achieved the uniquely haunting sounds that let viewers throughout the world know it’s time to fire up the Tardis. As promised, here’s the entire list:

1 Doctor Who

2 Red Dwarf

3 The X-Files

4 Buffy The Vampire Slayer

5 Star Trek

6 Thunderbirds

7 The Twilight Zone

8 Battlestar Galactica

9 Quantum Leap

10 The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy

Readers, what is your favorite theme song?
