Star Trek the Movies New on DVD

April 22, 2009 by Cynthia

More Trek! On May 12, Paramount Pictures is releasing a mammoth box set of Star Trek movies on Blu-Ray along with a smaller, Trilogy box set on regular DVD for those who don’t have the dollars for this double (triple?) dip.

The Star Trek: Motion Picture Trilogy set includes Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek: IV The Voyage Home and it will be available on either Blu-ray or DVD. The films have been digitally remastered in high definition (The Wrath of Khan has been restored) with new 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio for the Blu-ray release and each disc includes all-new special features, including exclusive BD-Live content. The collection will be available on Blu-ray with an anticipated retail of $48.99 and on DVD for $29.99.

The Star Trek Original Motion Picture Collection has the first six Star Trek films which have been digitally remastered in high definition and over 14 hours of special features, including 2 ½ hours of all-new material. The collection also includes a bonus disc entitled “Star Trek: The Captains’ Summit” that features a 70-minute exclusive round table discussion hosted by Whoopi Goldberg in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes share candid moments and intimate details about life on the set. The collection will be available on Blu-ray with an anticipated retail price of $104.99.

I did a quick comparison to the older DVDs that we own and it looks like most of the special features not marked HD or BD are from the older releases. If you don’t have all of the movies on DVD already, $104.99 is a small price to pay for what you’ll get, especially when you see how trimmed down the Trilogy set is. Take a look:
