Get Ready for Free Comic Book Day

Mark your calendars, folks, this Saturday, May 2 is Free Comic Book Day! On that day, comic book stores all over the United States will be handing out complimentary copies of some great new books for you try.
This year VIZ Media has something truly special planned, it’s a 32-page Shonen Jump sample (rated T for teens) featuring one chapter of Ultimo, one of the newest serialized manga adventures in the best-selling monthly manga anthology.
Manga, you say? But not just any manga. Ultimo is the historic collaboration between comic book legend Stan Lee, creator of many iconic superheroes, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, and Hiroyuki Takei, the creator of the popular Shaman King manga series. The new series, which is serialized in Shonen Jump, is an incredible collaboration of East and West with the majesty of manga and the sultan of superheros.
Also included in the Sampler is a special look at every single SHONEN JUMP manga series, an Ultimo pinup (of a character that may look familiar to Stan Lee fans), and an insightful interview with both Stan Lee and Hiroyuki Takei.

I hope that you are doing well. Going back to last Saturday, I did take some pictures at Free Comic Book Day. However, I have not yet used up all my film. So I am going to take some pictures at the next NC Rowan County Anime Group meeting.

Someone was telling me that Jeff Conaway, who played Zack Allan on Babylon 5, was on a talk show telling people about problems that he was having. I met Jeff Conaway in the hallway at Dragon Con in 1998. He seemed like a very nice person. I enjoyed talking to him for the little bit of time we had. Maybe writer Dan Johnson may have some more information on Jeff Conaway. It seems like a very long time has passed since I last saw Jason Carter back in 1998 in High Point.

Last night I saw two episodes of the anime series called Gurren Lagann on the Science Fiction Channel. I really need to start viewing this anime series from the beginning. I also enjoyed seeing a Rave Master episode. I’m happy to see that series back on the airwaves.

Going back to last Saturday, it was nice seeing artist Al Bigley. We talked about writer Roy Thomas and artist Sam Grainger working on fanzine. We had a good time talking about Monstore Con 2008 held back in Oct. If you would like to see some of Roy Thomas’ work, try looking for a VHS tape of the animated movie called Fire and Ice.

I also told Tim Will last Saturday that J .Michael Stracyniski did do some stories for He Man and The Masters of The Universe back in the 1980s.

May 20, 2009 will mark the 5th anniversary of when the NC Rowan County Anime Group started up the Internet side of the group. Web site Information:

Unhuu Sentrai Noiz will be performing a live concert at this year’s Animazement 2009. Kichi Tsunoda and Noriko Hidaka are also joining the ranks of guests at Animazement 2009. Artist Alley is sold out for this show. Jun Shishido Director of Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad will also be a guest at this show.
