Flanigan, Helfer Guest on Warehouse 13
May 28, 2009 by Cynthia
It’s going to be an all-star scifi summer on SCI FI Channel when some of your favorite stars pop up on the new dramedy adventure Warehouse 13.
Top of the list, Stargate Atlantis’ Joe Flanigan, Tricia Helfer from Battlestar Galactica, and one of my personal faves, James Naughton who starred in the Planet of the Apes TV series, but is more commonly known for his role on Gossip Girl.
Warehouse 13 is the story of two Secret Service agents who are assigned to guard a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse’s caretaker Artie (Saul Rubinek) charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanna Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself.
Guest Stars Include:
Doctor Who Specials to Air in US
We’ve had a bit of a break, but BBC America is about to get its Who on again with the acquisition of five new specials. The deal includes the four 2009 specials; the final episodes of the tenth Doctor as played by David Tennant. The first of the specials, Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead will premiere in July. As a London red bus takes a detour to an alien world it forces the Doctor (Tennant) to work with the extraordinary Lady Christina (Michelle Ryan, Bionic Woman). But the mysterious planet holds terrifying secrets hidden in the sand and time is running out as the deadly Swarm gets closer.
Javier Grillo-Marxuach Signs on to Day One
May 28, 2009 by Cynthia
“Just hired Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Erik Oleson, and Angela Kang as writers on DAY ONE! More announcements soon!”
Day One is NBC’s new apocalyptal aftermath series helmed by Heroes and Lost producer Jesse Alexander.
The story follows a band of eclectic neighbors from the same apartment building in Los Angeles who are forced to ban together in order to survive. Now they’ve got some hefty talent backing them up in the form of Javier Grillo-Marxuach (seen here with his friends from Lost) the creative genius behind the underrated Middleman series along with Erik Oleson from E-Ring and The Agency. Sounds like this show’s survival chances just went up a notch.
And speaking of The Middleman, Grillo-Marxuach announced on his blog that the DVD would be ready for release sometime this summer. If you’re a fan, and you really should be, check out the Shout! Factory website for the evolution of the DVD cover art. It’s all good stuff.

Ghostbusters Is Hiring
May 27, 2009 by Cynthia
Ever since those Winchester boys opened the gates of hell, it’s been a paranormal paradise here on Earth. And who do people call when they’ve got spirit problems? Ghostbusters, of course. Trouble is, there’s simply too much work for the guys to handle alone so they’ve decided to hire on some extra help. That’s where you come in.
The Ghostbusters are hiring and they’ve set up a new website where they’re taking applications. It’s called, (appropriately) GhostbustersIsHiring.com. Egon Spengler is still putting the finishing touches on the site, but when it’s done you’ll be able to upload your own ghostbusting photos and videos. The best Ghostbusters applicants will appear on the Blu-Ray Live special feature on the new Ghostbusters Blu-Ray DVD. And one lucky applicant will win a trip to Comic-Con – a place that is simply overflowing with the creepy, the spooky and the ookey!
Who you gonna call? Win this contest and the answer could be YOU!

Being Human Comes to BBCAmerica
May 27, 2009 by Cynthia
If you think your roommates are bad, try living with a ghost, a vampire and a werewolf! It’s the BBC series Being Human and it’s coming to America on July 25.
Being Human is a quirky mix of daily living comedy with the angst of the paranormal drama.
Here’s the lowdown:
George (Russell Tovey) and Mitchell (Aidan Turner) work in anonymous drudgery as hospital porters. They lead lives of quiet desperation under the burden of a terrible secret—Mitchell’s a vampire and George a werewolf. Deciding to start life afresh and leave behind the dark side, they move into a house, only to find that Annie, the ghost of a woman killed in mysterious circumstances, haunts it. As the monster threesome deals with the challenges of their new life together, they’re united in their desire to blend in with their human neighbors.
Buffy Without Joss, Why Not?
May 26, 2009 by Cynthia
Yesterday, the Hollywood Reporter broke a story about a potential Buffy the Vampire Slayer relaunch that wouldn’t include Joss Whedon in the mix. Basically, the original rights holders, Fran Rubel and husband Kaz Kuzui were approached by Vertigo Entertainment (The Grudge) with the idea of producing a new feature film based on the franchise. The article states that the producers hadn’t ruled out Whedon’s involvement but they have not yet “reached out to him.”
As you can imagine, the fans went wild. Buffy without Joss? Sacrilege! I say, baloney. I fully admit that Joss Whedon was 100 % responsible for the phenomena that was Buffy. It was his direction, his wit, his creative genius that made that show the icon that it is today. However, that doesn’t mean the franchise should be put out to pasture just because he’s no longer involved. Have we already forgotten Star Trek? J.J. Abrams admitted that he wasn’t a huge fan of the original series, and yet he did an excellent job of paying homage to the original while still giving us something new and exciting.
Primeval 3.2: Review
May 24, 2009 by Cynthia
Primeval: 3.2
Air Date: Saturday, May 23 on BBCAmerica
This week’s Primeval put a scifi spin on an old fashioned haunted house tale. It begins fourteen years ago when three teenage boys went in but only one came out. Fast forward to today and the house is a derelict monstrosity that couldn’t be anything but haunted!
Back at the ARC, Cutter and his new assistant Sarah Page are building a 3-D model of time that marks the initial sightings of a variety of mythical beasts. Through this bit of existential art, they hope to predict where the next anomaly will pop up.
Achieve Nerdvana with Science of the Movies
May 23, 2009 by Cynthia
From motion capture to computerized camera moves to the construction of a real live “fake” crime scene – science and technology play a huge part in all of our favorite TV shows and movies. Want in on how it all works? The Science Channel has just the show for you. It’s called Science of the Movies and it premieres this Tuesday, May 26th.
The series is hosted by Nar Williams, the Geek-in-Chief at AchieveNerdvana.com. He’s going to take you behind the scenes and give you a close up look at all how individual scenes were actually made. You’ll get to see the latest visual effects equipment and listen in on interviews with artists, stuntmen and directors on everything from Star Wars to Dexter.
In the first episode, Williams interviews Academy Award-winning special effects pioneer John Dykstra who invented the Dykstraflex – a motion control rig used to blow up the Death Star in “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.” Williams then gets up close, and maybe a little too personal, with the most used modern motion control system in the business today: Milo. Milo captures precise shots so that two or more scenes can be composited together to create one fluid moment, and is most famous for creating the “spidysense” scene in the first “Spider-Man” film.
Tonight on Primeval: The Haunting
May 23, 2009 by Cynthia
Primeval: 3.2
Episode two premieres Saturday, May 23, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT
This sounds like it could be my favorite episode to date. It reminds me of a new Outer Limits episode called “If Walls Could Talk.” Very creepy stuff.
Several years back, three teenage boys broke into a supposedly haunted house that came alive when a terrifying creature attacked them. In the aftermath, the only survivor was arrested for murder. Years later, the hapless young man is free, but is still too tormented to confront what really happened. Cutter’s research leads him to predict the next anomaly will open in this same so-called haunted house but soon into the investigation they discover the house is actually home to a terrifying camouflage creature from the future, a beast that can change shape and form to disguise itself until it is practically invisible. The team also find themselves in trouble with the law when suspicious police detective Danny Quinn (Jason Flemyng) takes an instant dislike to them and their interest in the house, culminating in Connor’s arrest.
