Defying Gravity Begins Tonight
August 2, 2009 by Cynthia
ABC’s Defying Gravity premieres tonight with a two-hour episode beginning at 9:00. It’s been referred to as Grey’s Anatomy in space, but recent reviews aren’t all bad. The LA Times says it has a “shaky but promising start,” but Alan Sepinwall calls it “cheap, disposable, summer programming.” Check it out and let us know what you think of this new sci fi show.
The series boasts a large international cast of faces you’ve seen before but
probably can’t name including Blood Ties’ Christina Cox, Andrew Airlie from Reaper, Zahf Paroo of Battlestar Galactica and Malik Yoba from New York Undercover.
Like many summer shows, this one only runs thirteen episodes, though from the sound of the early reviews, it will be lucky to last more than five.
Defying Gravity premieres on Sunday, August 2 at 9:00 then moves to its regular slot at 10:00 on August 9 on ABC.

LOL this was such a pile dung. Thanks for you mexican speak and so glad you could give us a truly diverse group of people that would never be in this position. Its the perfect liberal world in space lol, but stands to reason considering they live with so much space between their ears anyhow. What a crap plot lol.
I agree this was completely laughable and a waist of time. Hope they don’t continue to waist our time with this.
I usually like SiFi, but this was just junk.
Poorly written! Good graphics though.
I liked it, made me feel good about my life and how we give every other limited knowledge culture a chance to use ours for free.
Does sperm turn to liquid in space like it does on earth? So many f up people on this mission it was a joke, not to mention sex in space wtf.
LOL, ISO what’s that stand for Idiot Space Organization? Sending all those messed up people on the mission, and we are suppose to buy into the rest of the show, lol.
Ummm…how about a little bit of reality in a space show. Float….
Logic..tethers that extend 300 feet have winches.
You don’t take IKEA into space…
This show could have been so much better with a better crew (director).
I enjoyed it, but I think I may well be a key demographic: A female sci-fi fan who enjoys her soaps. Frankly if all you want is a show where you can nitpick the technical details, it’s not for you. But I was left intrigued enough by the storylines to want more.
Drama aside, I really liked the idea of an international spacy agency able to get such an ambitious idea off the ground. In addition, not only is the cast playing a diverse crew, they actually represent diverse backgrounds. (One cast member is Israeli, another German, and a third is Colombian among others.) The hope that we could come together and turn our combined efforts to exploring space instead of killing each other is a welcome message these days. It’s a brand of Roddenberry-esque optimism that I for one am happy to indulge in.
Most pilots are a little shaky upon take-off, but I for one would be interested in hearing more of the stories that Defying Gravity has to tell us.
I thought the show really didn’t have to offer than the conspiracy thing behind everything. I have a full review of the episode on my blog.

I have ocean front property for you in Montana for you. If we could just all get along ahhhhh. Ya never has, never will. live in that fairy tail mind of yours and stay out of the way. This show sucked a fate one.
Defying Gravity is great! With some ‘real’ science (love the Venus sequence) and some ‘real’ faith, mixed with ‘real’ people in ‘real’ life situations — what more could you ask for? So there’s no bullets; no bosoms or butts (yet) — pick up your IQ a little and check it out!
The above comments say it all.
We had this series in Britain and it is absolutely dire right through to the limp ending.
Make a note of the series writers and avoid them (or, if you can, recycle them (very slowly)).
See warning here.
