Tapping and Dunne Talk Sanctuary Season 2

October 14, 2009 by Cynthia

Sanctuary_Dunne_TappingEarlier this month, Sanctuary stars Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne sat down with reporters for an extensive interview.  There was an easy banter between the both of them;  humorous and self-deprecating. From the sound of it, they have a great working relationship that will only grow stronger (both on screen and off) as the second season of Sanctuary takes hold.

On the New Season:

Amanda Tapping: I think because it’s our second season you’re going to see a lot of changes in terms of the interpersonal relationships. I think Season 1 was very much about introducing everybody – introducing the Sanctuary itself, the creatures, what everyone does and where they come from. And so now we get to play within those parameters.

Things are changing at the Sanctuary. We are bringing in new characters. You’ll see a lot more of Henry this year than you did last year. We’re bringing in a wonderful new character named Kate Freelander. The relationship between and Druitt and Magnus changes and most importantly the relationship between Magnus and Will becomes, I think, so much deeper and so much more intense.

Robin Dunne: I think it’s because like, you know, everything is really falling apart around us. There’s going to be more of blunt relationship more of like a brutal honesty between all of the characters particularly Magnus and Will because really kind of our lives depend on it.

We can’t afford to be anything but brutally honest with each other. And I think there’s going to be definite strains in the relationship over this season. But because of those strains, I think all the relationships will get stronger.

What did you learn in the first season that you’ll carry through to Season 2?

NUP_134753_0936Robin Dunne: I think my approach to Will. Season 1 for Will was a lot about sort of coming into this world and not really being sure about it and having one foot in his old life and one foot in his new life and not really sure which way he was going to go.

And I think definitely Season 2 for Will is he’s let go of his old life and he’s really resigned himself to the fact that he lives in this world and he just has to own it because this is where he lives. The approach to this job for myself was much the same. I’d never had a job that’s this size before, particularly this type of series with the green screen and everything that comes along with it. Season 1 it was a lot about me trying to get used to being in this world and working on this show. I think Season 2, from an acting standpoint, was more about being comfortable with it and trying to take the character to a deeper place.

Amanda Tapping: For both of us, there was a lot of confidence going into Season 2. Season 1, for me, Magnus is such an enigma, she’s such an eccentric, different character. There’s so many things that she does that I go, “What?” And it’s like I have to wrap my head around her and go, okay, okay I can figure this out, it has to make sense to me. And Season 1 was a lot of trying to figure out what makes this woman tick. And also just the physicality of her, she’s a far more sexual character than I’ve ever played and going literally from Army boots to stilettos was a transition.

Stay tuned for more from Amanda and Robin as Sanctuary gets going on their second season. The series airs every Friday at 10:00 on Syfy.

What a boneheaded move killing off Ashley. I won’t invest anymore time in this series.

  2. richard says:

I think will needs a love interest! a nice hottie, not the one that currently been captured and is not trustable!!! the invisable girl was just right for him. keep the action comming don’t like slow moving plots and shows so far it’s been great. keep a good plot going don’t loose your way like most new shows do and then get cancelled!!!!!

  3. Linda says:

I agree with Bob – why kill off Ashley. I’m hanging in there a little longer because I like the Magnus and Will characters, but Ashley gave it a young kick butt approach in a female character. I’m not big on a smart mouth thief taking her place.

  4. Just Ray says:

The smart mouth new babe didn’t replace Ashley, she’s a new ingredient to season 2’s recipe. If any character in the show ever muttered that line Magnus would surely respond “Ashley is not replaceable”.BTW, No one really dies in Sci-Fi even after the ghost comes back. I missed part 2 in which Ashley “left”. Any idea where to view it? Thanks

  5. Louis Renault says:

Killed off Ashley? Seriously? So stupid! I’m done with the show.

  6. Jason says:

I definitely agree that killing Ashley was a huge mistake!!! What, did someone have issues with the actress playing her roll or something? Whatever the reason, I think by killing her off the show has lost a key ingredient that made season 1 so fun. Still watching the show for now to see how this season ends but I hope for the show’s sake it’s spectacular, otherwise I see a lof of fans going away.

  7. Kerry McLean says:

Because this is SCI-FI I still keep hoping that somehow they will fiqure out a way to bring Ashley back to life. I was very disapointed when she was killed. Alot of new shows it seems make the same mistake of killing off a lead character to seem more true to life I guess? Most shows don’t recover in the end. I’m very relieved that the death of the “Big guy” was a hoax. I probably wouldn’t continue to watch otherwise. If I wanted to see shows that were true to life I would watch Lifetime. I don’t. Most people watch and or read SCI-Fi for a break from reality. It’s kinda like when a good sitcom just has to screw things up by having too many heartfelt and or sad moments. If I wanted to be reminded of mortality I wouldn’t watch a sit-com. C’mon writers real life sucks enough without being reminded of death and sadness on a show that people clearly watch for pure sci-fi/fantasy entertainment. If you must kill people off to satisfy some need to “be real” do it with guest stars not main characters that we have come to know and love.
