Syfy Adds Fairy Tales to the Saturday Movie Mix

First it was Mega Shark vs. The Giant Octopus, then snakes on a sub, and now Hansel is out to avenge the death of his sister – but there’s a surprise waiting for him when he revisits that gingerbread cottage in the forest!
Yep, Syfy is going down the wooded fairy tale path but you can bet these won’t be the kind of bedtime stories you’re used to hearing. Think Alice. Think Tin Man, and then forget it. We’re talking Syfy Saturday Original Movies – the modern version of the old B-flick and mock if you will, but these movies are …read more

Syfy’s House of Bones is Horrible Fun

“A couple of teenagers in their parent’s basement write a few negative blogs and suddenly my hit show is tired?”
Don’t worry about this blogger, Quentin. I’ve got nothing but great things to say about Sinister Sites: House of Bones. That is, if you don’t mind being called a cheesy b-movie (cause I love cheesy b-movies!)
It all begins with a boy, a house and baseball back in the 1950’s. The ball goes into the yard of the spooky old house, the boy goes into the yard to get the ball and then that thing happens that happens in all horror movies …read more

Your Top 20 (or so) Favorite B-Movies

For one of our recent contests, we asked people when they entered to name their favorite B-Movie. Below you’ll find their replies ranked from most to least. The number following is the number of people that mentioned that movie.
Though a couple of my favorites like Killer Shrews made the list, there are a couple I’ve never heard of! Teeth, people? Really?
Have any flicks you’d like to add to the list?
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (6)
Evil Dead (5)
Evil Dead 2 (4)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (3)

Get Out the Raid: It’s Our Top 5 Giant Bug Movies

I’m a chicken when it comes to bugs, especially spiders! (It was the size of a Buick and it had a gun.)  Maybe that’s why I enjoy seeing a tarantula the size of a semi get its comeuppance in the form of a bomb.
So here is my list of my Top 5 Favorite Giant Bug Movies.

5.  Earth Vs. The Spider (1958)
Bert l. Gordon made a name for himself making movies about nature gone wild.  He was actually dubbed “Mr. Big” for both his initials and his penchant for giant creature movies.  This time out, it’s all about a …read more

What’s Scarier Than a Fiend Without a Face?

What’s Scarier Than a Fiend Without a Face?

Fiend Without a Face is one of my all-time favorite B-movies, due mostly to the antics of the stop-motion brain sucking cuties mentioned in the title. But that’s getting a “head” of the story, so let’s go back.
Marshall Thompson is Major Jeff Cummings. He’s in charge of a super secret (well, sorta secret) military project, which uses nuclear power to boost radar signals so we can spy on the Russians. Produced in 1957, this film features two of the major themes of horror movies of the era — fear of nuclear power and the Red Threat.
In the film, …read more

All Hail, The Creature Feature!

All Hail, The Creature Feature!

When I was a kid, I spent every Saturday afternoon sitting in front of the TV watching Dr. Shock and the Creature Double Feature. Dr. Shock was a Philadelphia horror host with slicked back hair, pasty white skin and a set that was decorated with Halloween leftovers from the five and dime. Each week he unveiled a classic B horror or sci fi flick and during the breaks he told corny jokes and palled around with his baby girl Bubbles! I loved every minute of it.
Dr. Shock and his Mad Theater ruled Saturday afternoons on Channel 17 …read more
