Monsters Invade Roswell

July 6, 2009 by Cynthia

monsters_aliens_1Everyone knows that Roswell is the favorite vacation spot for aliens and monsters from all over the universe. So it was no surprise that the stars of DreamWorks’ Monsters vs Aliens stopped by to celebrate their DVD release this past weekend.

Gotta cultivate those new sci fi fans while they’re young and these kids look very alien friendly!

Monsters vs. Aliens, the DVD, will arrive on Earth September 29, 2009 and will include the world premiere of the brand new 3D adventure B.O.B.’s Big Break, starring everyone’s favorite gelatinous hero.

Jack Arnold Makes TCM Most Overlooked List

June 1, 2009 by Cynthia

Turner Classic Movies has posted a list of the 15 Most Overlooked Classic Directors in movie history. Incredibly, only one, Jack Arnold, worked in the sci fi genre, but I will admit, he’s a good pick.

creature_black_lagoonJack Arnold is the man who made Creature From the Black Lagoon the classic that it is today. Atmospheric and creepy, Arnold delivered a story that made you believe that a gill man could fall in love.

Arnold also directed Tarantula, one of the best of the giant bug films, as well as The Incredible Shrinking Man. Later in his career, Arnold became a well-respected TV director on shows such as It Takes a Thief, Alias Smith and Jones and Brady Bunch, and he was one of the guiding forces behind Gilligan’s Island.

Jack Arnold, we salute you!

Now it’s your turn. Who do you think belongs on the list of Most Overlooked Classic Directors?

Is Primeval Coming to a Theater Near You?

May 15, 2009 by Cynthia

According to a report in Variety, Warner Brothers has spent some serious coin to acquire the big screen rights to the UK series Primeval.

The series, which currently airs on SCI Fi Channel and BBC America, deals with the concept of a time rift which is allowing dinosaurs to come through into modern-day London. On the movie front, Primeval would look a lot like Jurassic Park except that it has the time travel element.

Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster will produce through Goldsman’s WB-based Weed Road banner. Word is the setting will be switched to the US and the action will be cranked up quite a bit.

I’m a huge fan of Primeval on TV, so I’m excited by the idea of a major motion picture even though it obviously won’t be featuring the current cast or characters.

Wolverine Takes $87 Million Cut of Box Office

May 4, 2009 by brian

90428A2_JACKMAN_B-GR_08 He’s the best there is at what he does, and what he does is kick off the summer box office in grand style. X-Men Origins:Wolverine raked in $87 million over the weekend to of course, earn the no. 1 spot.

Doesn’t look like a leaked copy of the film sans special effects had any impact, unless it was to increase anticipation for the finished product. Bringing in that kind of cash, it’s almost a certainty we’ll see more X-films. As a matter of fact, as long as these things keep making money, X-Men Origins:That Mutant That Was In One Scene in X-Men 2 is not out of the realm of possibility.

Heroes star Ali Larter is turning heads in Obsessed, a thriller that paints her as a psychopath trying to steal Beyonce Knowles’ man.  Ali Larter or Beyonce? Only in the movies are men faced with such decisions. Obsessed cost only $20 million but has already pulled in nearly $50 million.

As for our favorite mutant, he will likely only have a one week reign at the top as a little Star Trek movie opens next week. It is a great time to be alive, SFUniverse faithful.

Get Your SNIKT! On With Wolverine Today

May 1, 2009 by brian

xmen-origins-wolverine-hugh-jackman-2-thumb1 The X-Men film franchise delves into the backstory of its most popular mutant, Wolverine today in cinemas everywhere.  X-Men Origins:Wolverine tells us just how he became the “best there is at what he does.”

We learn more about the history between Wolverine and Sabretooth, the Weapon X program and there are a few cameos from other mutants such as Cyclops, Deadpool and Gambit.

The commercials say that “summer begins here” and in terms of the summer box office, that is probably not an untrue statement. It’s certainly anticipated to be the summer’s first blockbuster. As journalists, we’re watching to see what impact the leak of an unfinished cut will have on the box office, if any. Readers, do you plan to spend at least part of your weekend with some X-Men?

Plan To See Wolverine? Seen It Already?

April 17, 2009 by brian

Why is Wolverine so popular anyway? Is it because he’s almost indestructible? Maybe it’s the shiny adamantium claws. No, probably the hair. It’s definitely the hair.

For the ladies, it’s probably a little something about Hugh “Sexiest Man Alive” Jackman going feral in fight scenes. It makes perfect sense that ol’ Logan, the reputed best there is at what he does, would be the first X-Man to get a solo film.

I have to say I’m pumped, as much for the event as I am for the film itself. This one is chock full of cameos from numerous mutants including Gambit, who can blow things up by touching them. He’s also one of a handful of heroes from Louisiana. The other notable one being Swamp Thing, who’s kind of a tree.

X-Men Origins:Wolverine will also show us fanboy favorite Emma Frost, who can transform herself into diamond and read minds. There’s The Blob, who can summon and harness gravitational fields and - oh heck, he’s really fat. The Blob got royally screwed on the mutant power scale. Readers, what are your thoughts about Wolverine? We’re assuming, of course, none of our readers would have downloaded that leaked copy we’re not supposed to know anything about.
