Syfy Asks You To Imagine Greater
July 2, 2009 by Cynthia
With the switch rapidly approaching, the channel formerly known as Syfy has released a charming new promo video that is meant to capture the feel of the new brand.
I’ve always enjoyed SCI FI’s imaginative ads, seeing people and things transform right before your very eyes. This new promo takes it even one step further as some of the network’s stars come out to party in a truly magical castle.
The biggest difference I see between this new promo and the old ones, is the warmth and happy tone. The original ads were cool but always very sterile and simple — truly capturing the feel of modern science fiction. This new ad is full of warm colors and detailed images that are constantly changing and moving. It feels more modern fairy tale and less a trip into space and you gotta love the Escher homage with the cast of Warehouse 13.
It’s all very SteamPunk meets Alice in Wonderland and I can totally get behind that. Click here to watch the House of Imagination video at the new Syfy.com.
I think it’s more fun to spot the stars Waldo style, but if you want a list in order of appearance, it’s under the cut.
Syfy Announces Their Comic Con Schedule
June 30, 2009 by Cynthia
Making the brand change from SCI FI to Syfy, the (insert name here) channel promises a big show at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. In addition to the usual panels, they’ll be taking over the restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel, and re-branding it as Eureka’s “Cafe Diem” for the duration of the convention. This will act as their convention hub and I imagine that will mean lots of goodies and fun for everyone who stops by. (SCI FI Channel Photo: Liane Hentscher)
They have some great guests and lots of sneak peeks at many of their new TV shows.
Also note that the Sanctuary panel is listed as being at the Bayside Hilton — leading me to wonder if more of the events are going to be held off site to reduce crowding. Nice idea, but getting from there to the Warehouse 13 panel that follows is going to be a nightmare.
Here’s the full listing:

Now that Battlestar Galactica is over, NBC Universal and Propworx are holding one last auction this weekend, May 8, 9 and 10 at the Pasadena Convention Center with some of the proceeds to benefit The United Way. But this isn’t any ordinary auction. On hand to make this event extra special, will be cast and crew members who will answer questions in two panel sessions.

From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Grace Park, Michael Trucco and Kate Vernon will discuss their work on Battlestar Galactica and then at 6:00 p.m., several of the production executives will discuss how they worked together to create the series, including Emmy-nominated and MPSE award-winning sound designer Daniel Colman, producer Harvey Frand, Emmy Award-winning VFX supervisor Gary Hutzel, co-producer Paul Leonard, the show’s music composer Bear McCreary, award-winning director Michael Nankin, associate producer Andy Seklir, supervising producer/co-writer Bradley Thompson, supervising producer/co-writer David Weddle and Emmy Award-winning director Wayne Rose.

Caprica Comes to DVD
April 8, 2009 by Cynthia
Want to be the first person to see the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica? Simply get up bright and early on April 21st and buy the Digital Download. This limited-edition uncut and unrated version will be also be available on DVD so you can see it all long before the series’ broadcast premiere on SyFy in 2010.
Here’s how it goes:
An astonishing breakthrough is taking shape on the planet Caprica. The rapidly evolving spheres of human and mechanical engineering have collided, along with the fates of two families. Joined by tragedy in an explosive instant of terror, two rival clans led by powerful patriarchs, Joseph Adama (Esai Morales, Jericho) and Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz, The Butterfly Effect) duel in an era of questionable ethics, corporate machinations and unbridled personal ambition as the final war for humanity looms. The latest phenomenon from the executive producers of Battlestar Galactica (Ronald D. Moore and David Eick), set in a time over 50 years earlier, Caprica is entirely its own world - provocative, thrilling and startling relevant to our own.
The DVD has several great bonus features including commentary by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, video blogs, “The Director’s Process,” “The Birth of a Cyclon,” “The V Club” and “What the Frak is Caprica.” Learn more about the DVD by visiting the official site.

Paley Festival Line-Up Announced
February 18, 2009 by Cynthia
Every year, The Paley Center For Media runs a wonderful TV festival where they pay homage to some of the standout shows of the past season. What I like best about their choices is it’s more about uniqueness and buzz then it is about ratings.
This year there are a number of great sci fi shows on the list. If you’re in the Los Angeles area and you’re a fan of any of these shows, you want to get to the Paley Festival panel — it’s worth the effort.
The PaleyFest09 schedule is as follows—please note that events/participants are subject to change:

Caprica Will Hit DVD Before TV
February 10, 2009 by brian
In an interesting promotional move, Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica will actually come out April 21 as a DVD. That’s a full eight months before it hits Sci Fi as a TV series in 2010. TV Guide reports on the unusual release and seems as confused as I am.
Sci Fi has to be thinking - OK, I don’t what they’re thinking but maybe this will help generate buzz. The two-hour pilot movie better be really good though. The last thing you want is a bunch of BSG fans watching this pilot and deciding to skip the show.
Caprica looks at the Greystone and Adama families that play a pivotal role in setting up the society soon to be ruined by the Cylon-Human conflict.

Caprica Gets Full Season Pickup
December 2, 2008 by brian
SCI FI Channel is betting that Battlestar fans won’t have had their fill of the universe that reinvented the classic sci-fi series. Today SCI FI announced a 20 episode full season pickup of BSG prequel Caprica.
Caprica focuses on the 12 Colonies’ two preeminent families, the Greystones and the Adamas. The Greystones are the family that create the artificial intelligence that will grow into the Cylons. The Adamas will go on to lead the Colonial Fleet and in Lee Adama’s case, become president.
BSG creator Ron Moore has said the tone of this one will be more like Dallas than Galactica. What do you think, readers? Does this Viper fly as far as you’re concerned?
