February 2, 2010 by Cynthia
All the Who’s down in Whoville like February 2 a lot because it marks the DVD release of Doctor Who: The Complete Specials! David Tennant winds up his tenure as the reigning Time Lord of TV with this fantastic box set.
This set is made up of the last four Doctor Who specials, The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars and The End of Time, Parts One and Two.
Having those complete and at your fingertips for multiple watchings is good enough but they’ve also packed on some excellent special features. You get the full Doctor Who Confidential …read more
More Notes from the TCA’s
January 10, 2010 by Cynthia
NBC is up today and here’s a quote that should please:
The pilot for “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer” with David Tennant has finished shooting, and Bromstad says that “theoretically” it could be something that fills part of the 10 p.m. hole [the cancellation of the Jay Leno show]come spring.
And Heroes:
“Heroes”? Bromstad says NBC still likes the show but won’t make a decision until it sees the pilots.
And sadly, Alex O’Loughlin is out of work again. A quote from Nina Tassler of CBS:
She was, however, much more to the point about the Alex O’Loughlin-starring organ donation medical drama “Three Rivers.” When …read more
New This Week Doctor Who Has a Twin Dilemma
January 9, 2010 by Cynthia
This week we saw the release of two new (old) Doctor Who classics courtesy of BBC Worldwide. We have “The Keys of Marinus” from the William Hartnell years and “The Twin Dilemma” with Colin Baker.
Hartnell represents the least watched era of Whodom for me, 1963-1966. I don’t think it’s the year of the original airing so much as the fact that I never really warmed up to Hartnell as The Doctor. He’s a bit too much like a stern schoolmaster in looks and that’s always put me off to watching his episodes.
In “The Keys of Marinus,” The Doctor and his …read more
Saying Goodbye to David Tennant
January 6, 2010 by Cynthia
What’s that expression, it’s all over except the crying? David Tennant has completed his time as The Doctor and I don’t think there’s anyone, including David himself, who is glad to see him go.
Yesterday, I got a look at the special features on the February 2nd Doctor Who DVD release that will cover David’s final episodes. There was a camera following him around on that last day of shooting and it was heart-wrenching to watch. I know it’s only a TV show, but it was clear that saying goodbye to the show wasn’t easy for David or anyone connected with …read more
Old Friends Return for David Tennant’s Last Outing
December 28, 2009 by Cynthia
This past weekend, BBC America aired the start of David Tennant’s last hurrah as Doctor Who. The holiday special is called Doctor Who: The End of Time and they are giving the old boy quite a send off.
Knowing is time is growing short, the Doctor is tasked with tracking down the Master (John Simm) who has risen from the grave in time for another Christmas. He’s even more wild-eyed and wicked than ever as he uses a piece of alien technology to turn everyone on Earth, except for Wilf and Donna (Bernard Cribbins, Catherine Tate) into copies of himself. But …read more
Sarah Jane Adventures Season 2 on DVD
If you’re a scifi parent, it’s your duty to help preserve the genre by getting your kids into the mix as early as possible. One way to do this is to offer them the Sarah Jane Adventures on DVD. Season 2 is now available and it’s a great introduction not only to scifi in general but to that next generation Doctor Who fan as well.
Long, long ago, Sarah Jane Smith was one of Doctor Who’s companions. Now she’s semi-retired, living in a lovely suburban neighbor and she’s teaching the local children how to fight off aliens. A good deal of …read more
Win a Collection of British Scifi Books
December 5, 2009 by Cynthia
In honor of David Tennant’s retirement from Who-ville, and John Barrowman saying he’ll be returning to Torchwood, I’m offering up a set of British scifi books to one lucky winner.
Here’s what’s included:
The Eclectic Gypsy by Dave Thompson which takes you through the history of Doctor Who in a very unusual way.
Next we have two Primeval novels – Shadow of the Jaguar by Steven Saville (my personal favorite) and The Lost Island by Paul Kearney.
Plus three Torchwood novels – Slow Decay by Andy Lane, Border Princes by Dan Abnett and Another Life by Peter Anghelides.
It’s a fun collection of books for …read more
BBC America Schedules Next Doctor Who
December 3, 2009 by Cynthia
They’ve been teasing it for quite awhile, but BBC America has finally settled on an air date for David Tennant’s last outing as Doctor Who. Feels like the end of an era, doesn’t it? Fitting then, that it lands just after the start of a new year. It’s called Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part Two, and it premieres January 2, one week after Part One, on BBC America.
Lead writer and executive producer Russell T Davies told Radio Times, “It’s personal for the Doctor. The Master (John Simm) is his enemy, his opposite, and yet so tantalizingly close to …read more
Barrowman Confirms Torchwood is Coming Back
November 30, 2009 by Cynthia
John Barrowman was a guest on a BBC radio show this morning to promote his new DVD An Evening with John Barrowman. Jumping straight to the big news he said, “Most definitely, Torchwood will come back to the BBC.”
He says that the whens and hows are still being talked about but they’re looking at another 13 episode run, not 5 which is extra great news.
As for appearing with the new Doctor Who, John says it hasn’t been discussed but followed with, “I’m prepared that it won’t happen.”
If you’re a John Barrowman fan, you’ll want to listen to the full interview …read more
Doctor Who: The Black Guardian Trilogy Comes to DVD
November 21, 2009 by Cynthia
Peter Davison may not come out on top of any Favorite Doctor Who actor poll, but he’s definitely one of the contenders for the most recognizable. Manning the TARDIS in the early 80’s, he looked quite natty in his red-trimmed cricketers uniform with the celery stalk pinned to his lapel.
Davison stars in the latest BBC Video Doctor Who release, The Black Gaurdian Trilogy. This box set is made up of ‘Mawdryn Undead,” “Terminus,” and “Enlightenment.”
The Doctor comes into the trilogy with two lovely companions, Tegan and Nyssa but they’re soon joined by Turlough (Mark Strickson), an alien who has been …read more
