Russell T Davies: Torchwood Touches a Nerve

June 29, 2009 by Cynthia

torchwood_3_shot_image_1_web“We are coming.”

If you’ve been watching BBC America, you’ve seen the promos for Torchwood: Children of Earth. That chilling voice over — Jack, Gwen and Ianto in a panic state. All those dead eyes staring back at you! It’s Torchwood’s creepiest monsters ever — kids!

“They just touch a nerve,” says Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies. “A threat to our children gets a primal reaction out of all of us. But beyond that, I think we can be scared of our kids, too. That they can seem unknowable, unreachable - that’s why a gang of young hoodies can seem more unnerving than an adult gang of thugs.”

It’s a story Davies has been wanting to tell for ages and finally he was given the opportunity when the BBC agreed to a five-part Torchwood mini-series instead of the normal run.

“Underneath the sci-fi and the aliens, there’s something very relevant to the world, I hope. The way we sit in the west, and watch footage of atrocities in different countries, and imagine it’s all so far away, and so impossible here. Which is a nice, comfy lie we tell ourselves. That was the heart of it. I wanted to tell a story in which civilization snaps, in which we turn on ourselves, in which nothing is safe. Plenty of people live like that, on this planet. In this story, it’s Britain’s turn.”

But writing an epic five-part mini wasn’t an easy job, even for a pro like Davies.

Tonight Doctor Who: The Next Doctor

June 27, 2009 by Cynthia

“From the moment I took over [as the Doctor, the U.K. tabloids] were all saying, ‘Well, who’s going to be next’” in the role, said David Tennant in a dr_who_next_doctor_phone interview with the Chicago Tribune. “One of the names that always came up was David Morrissey, so it was nice to be able to play with those expectations a little bit.”

In a clever ploy that allowed the series to run for so many years, The Doctor has the ability to regenerate — taking on a new face (as in a new actor) every few seasons. But this time around, it’s not a new body for The Doctor, but another Doctor all together (or is it?)

Here’s how the BBC describes Doctor Who: The Next Doctor:

dr_who_next_doctor__02It’s Christmas Eve in 1851 and Cybermen stalk the snow of Victorian London.  When the Doctor (David Tennant) arrives to investigate a spate of mysterious deaths, he’s surprised to meet another Doctor (David Morrissey, State of Play, Viva Blackpool), with his own sonic screw driver.  How could this be possible? Could this Doctor be a future regeneration?  But if so where are his memories?  The two must combine forces to defeat the ruthless Miss Hartigan (Dervla Kirwan, Law & Order UK, Ballykissangel), who is the Cybermen’s human ally.  But are two Doctors enough to stop the rise of the CyberKing?

dr_who_next_doctor__04It’s the first of five Doctor Who specials, with the next one, Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead airing on BBC American on July 26. Planet of the Dead was the first special shot in HD and it will help launch the new BBC America HD channel along with Torchwood come July 20.

But for tonight, it’s Doctor Who: The Next Doctor, Saturday, June 27 at 9:00 on BBC America.

John Barrowman Talks Torchwood: Children of Earth

June 19, 2009 by Cynthia

mrpphotos266066-cd30003487It’s once more into the breach, as John Barrowman slips into his great coat and takes off after another alien threat in Torchwood: Children of Earth. It’s technically the third season, but this time around it’s merely a five-part mini. Still, John’s excited about bringing Captain Jack back to TV in another thrilling adventure.

Q: How is Torchwood: Children of Earth different from the previous seasons?

Barrowman: This storyline is one of the darker Torchwood storylines. Every time you turn a corner you don’t know what’s going to happen. And when you watch episode one you’re going to want to see two, and when you’ve seen two you’ll want to see three. You’re just going to want more and more and more. The new threat faced by the team takes on a sinister theme, using the children of Earth as a conduit. And anything that involves children doing stuff they are not supposed to be doing is creepy!

Q: Jack, Gwen and Ianto have had to deal with so much these past two years. Where do they go from here?

June 17, 2009 by Cynthia

01_14mb_webDoctor Who and Captain Jack Harkness are headed for the good old U.S of A and just in time for Comic Con. Imagine that.

BBC America has announced their lineup for this year’s scifi / comic lollapalooza and it’s a biggie.

David Tennant, will appear alongside writer/executive producer Russell T Davies, executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn for a Doctor Who panel on Sunday July 26, 10:00-11:00am PT. (Just before Supernatural!) They’ll be showing sneak peeks from Tennant’s upcoming specials and offering photo ops.

Then, John Barrowman, will take the stage with Davies and Julie Gardner to discuss the new Torchwood: Children of Earth special.  During the same panel, we’ll be introduced to the new BBC America series Being Human. On hand for that will be creator and writer, Toby Whithouse, plus stars Russell Tovey, Lenora Crichlow and Aidan Turner who will talk about what it’s like to play three twenty-somethings with secret double-lives – as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost. All four panelists will be signing exclusively at the BBC AMERICA booth, Saturday July 25, 3:00-4:00pm PT.

There will also be special screenings of Doctor Who and Torchwood with introductions by the stars and you’ll get a chance to buy a new limited edition Comic-Con only action figure from Doctor Who.

June 14, 2009 by Cynthia

Here’s a look at some interesting scifi stories from around the web:

Torchwood creator and executive producer Russell T. Davies told the British press Friday that the fourth season of the sci-fi show is ready and waiting, depending on how the show’s third mini-season (”Children of Earth”) performs.

dh-ep113_echo-kepler_7391Joss Whedon on Dollhouse

Whedon says. “Really, just every meeting is like, ‘What’s the most fun we can have with this actor?’ about the whole cast. All I can say — ’cause I’m gonna be Mr. Un-Spoiler — is that we’re having a crazy amount of fun, and usually, that tends to translate onto the screen.”

Would FOX or NBC Be Willing To Bring It Back?

Yes. I think from my talks with the people running FOX that they would bring it back under the right circumstances. However, you must understand that right now Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, and Alan Tudyk (plus he was killed in SERENITY) all have gigs for the foreseeable future. However don’t underestimate the power of a movie.

Enter the World of Doctor Who with Eclectic Gypsy

June 2, 2009 by Cynthia

The Galactic Inquirer calls it, “a comprehensive look at the man and the mystery.”

Neptunian News says, “Eclectic Gypsy should be required reading” while the Skaro Telegraph says it’s utter nonsense and author Dave Thompson should be exterminated.

Well, you can’t please all of the creatures all of the time, can you?

eclectic_gypsyEclectic Gypsy is subtitled “an unauthorized biography of Doctor Who” but it’s so much more than that. This book is probably the only volume ever written that follows the Doctor from birth through his early school years to his travels on Planet Earth. It’s a comprehensive dossier built from scraps of information found in newspapers and pamphlets from across the galaxy, personal interviews with acquaintances and modern news footage. You may think you know the Doctor, but do you really?

Torchwood Children of Earth to Air in HD

June 1, 2009 by Cynthia

On July 20th, BBC America will launch their new HD Channel with the premiere of Torchwood: Children of Earth. If you thought Torchwood looked great before, you won’t believe the scope of this new mini-series when shown in High Def.

torchwood_children_of_earth_iconic_webThe downside? We’re only getting five nights of Captain Jack and the gang this year and that pains me so.

This time around Captain Jack (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) are still coming to terms with the death of two of their closest friends when they are forced to face their fiercest threat to date - one which throws the future of Torchwood and the entire human race spiraling into danger.

On July 28, a day after the run ends on BBC America, the DVD will be released in stores in both a standard and Blu-Ray edition.  This is also the release date for the second season DVD and it’s no coincidence that it all hits just after Comic Con where they say they’ll be making a big splash.

Can’t wait for July? Visit the BBC America site HERE for the new trailer.
