But you know what always happens at work while you’re on vacation? Your desk gets piled high with the stuff no one else wants to touch and that’s Sam’s problem in this second season premiere of Reaper.

Forget one or two souls, he’s charged with taking down a group of 20 or so nasty hombres who have formed their own supernatural fight club! They’re going to need brains over brawn (which is a good thing considering the shape the boys are in) in order to take down this brood and when you’re the son of the devil, failure is not an option.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen a new episode of Reaper, I’d forgotten how much I really enjoy this show. I do, however, have a confession to make. I stopped watching after the first few months because I didn’t like all of the extra characters that they threw into the mix. I’m happy to say, this second season premiere focuses the camera on the basic quartet of Sam, Sock, Ben and Andi with Ray Wise’s devil riding shot gun as always.

That’s not to say that there aren’t a few new additions to the cast. Sock has a new, hot, step-sister living in the house with him while his mom and her new husband are away. That makes for a few laughs but I got bored with the joke very quickly.

During a speech that could have been Paul Lynde singing “Kids” from Bye Bye Birdie, we learn that the devil has lots of sons but none, so far, have lived up to the promise of their DNA. Later in the season, Arnie Hammer will put in an appearance as one of those determined to become the number one son, even if that means eliminating his competition.

Lastly, we have Sean Patrick Thomas as a saved soul who seems to have found a way out of his deal with the devil. That means hope and a whole new attitude for Sam by the end of the episode.

If you’ve never seen Reaper, this is a great time to give it a try. Everything you need to know is packaged for you upfront in this episode so don’t worry about coming in late to the movie. If you’re a fan who wavered, like me, give the show another shot. It’s a funny show in a quirky kind of way and the heroes are likable and not so bumbling as before.

The premiere is titled: Episode IV: A New Hope, and that alone should tell you where Reaper’s writers are coming from. Watch it tonight at 8:00 on The CW.

I’ve always believed that the truth is out there but proof is so hard to come by, until now. TopSecretConspiracy.com has located evidence that proves aliens have been here on earth since at least the 1980’s. The evidence was found when Arnett Will of Witherspoon, Missouri began dubbing his VHS tape collection over to DVD. He put in a tape that turned out to be an exercise video owned by his wife Reese and you won’t believe what he spotted.
Take a look and believe what your eyes are telling you.

Doug Higley was one of our Space Buddies DVD winners and he was so pleased by his prize (which arrived insanely quickly thanks to the sponsor) he wrote this “review” which is less about the movie and more about the good things in life.

As far as reviewing Sci-Fi and Space films, it might be helpful to know from whence I come…I saw Destination Moon IN theater…as well as Rocket Ship XM, Forbidden Planet, 2001 Space Odyssey and of course Star Wars all in theater during their original release. ie: I’ve been there and back since before rope much less actual moon walks. Yeah, I saw that live too not to mention being the only American to watch Yuri Gargarin (first man in space-1961) orbit LIVE while it happened thanks to my Top Secret job with US Army Security under the NSA.

Plus I’m a fan of ‘B’ movies and there lies the rub. In the old days you could count on the big Hollywood studios to fire up their ‘B’ units and release a steady stream of quality fare…the ‘Tarzans’, the Andy Hardy series etc. In the 50’s the influx of Sc-Fi and Monster movies filled the screens from American International, boy was I there for that! (Still my favorite genre.)

These days, aside from the prolific output of the Sci-Fi channel’s dubious efforts in flooding the screen with the same plot, different poorly rendered CGI critter every week, the ‘B’s have gone to direct DVD release and the studio of note is Disney. You can always count on the quality of the Disney production teams and Space Buddies shines in those departments. Crisp clean visuals and sets and crackerjack audio make this one a good buy for family viewing.

I was fortunate to win my copy right here at Sci-Fi Universe. How about that! I was going to buy it anyway because I’m a sucker for talking animals, especially cute pups (and yeah, pigs).

You can find the plot and all the names and stuff on your own. The point of me writing this is for the older readers, to let you know it’s OK to relax your wall built up over the years toward anything fanciful. Re-arm your sense of wonder and sit with your kids and grand kids and watch Space Buddies. Pretty darn cute movie. Science wise…well, forget science wise…it’s a fantasy for cryin’ out loud, for the kids over three and under training bra age. Those of us facing the twilight can like it too if you let it just be…uh…’B’.

If you’re a fan of B movies, carnivals and creepshows, you must check out Doug’s books Scary Dark Rides and Museum Mysteria.

But on his 21st birthday, Sam was told it was time he joined the family business — the business of hunting down escaped souls and sending them back to hell where they belong.

If you’re thinking Sam and Dean Winchester, think again. Sam Oliver works for the devil himself (Ray Wise) thanks to a deal made by his parents, who may not be his real parents at all. It’s Reaper and it’s returning to The CW for a second season starting on March 3.

If you’ve never seen the series, it’s sort of Supernatural crossed with Chuck. It’s mainstay is action comedy but you’ll also see a number of ghosts, ghoulies and other things that go bump in the night. If that’s not enough to draw you in, then watch for the talents of Ray Wise and Tyler Labine (Sam’s buddy Sock) both of whom steal every scene they’re in.

I have images of Reaper’s Devil sharing a drink with Supernatural’s Lilith — now that would be one mad tea party!

It’s not Scifi specific, but Daisy Whitney has a great column up at TVWeek all about when it’s okay to spoil. Here’s a bit. But you have to go and read the whole piece, it’s so appropriate for not only TV reporters, but for TV fans in general.
Am I allowed to mention that Izzie is having sex with Denny on “Grey’s Anatomy?”
It’s not the sex part I’m worried about. What I’m wondering is—is it OK to “spoil” that she did it with a dead guy more than two weeks ago?

Arthur Petrelli tells the new Sylar-Elle team to go get Claire Bennet. Arthur shows Mohinder a picture he drew of what appears to be a dead Claire and Arthur tells Mohinder he has no idea what’s going to happen today.

Sylar and Elle go to a rental car place where Elle tells the clerk Sylar is a serial killer and has kidnapped her. Hey, only half of that’s true. For some reason she wants to turn Sylar back into a killer although she was really upset about doing it before. Go figure. Claire and HRG go to the house where they confronted the guy with black hole powers. They alternate between teaching Claire to fight and arguing about what a bad daddy Noah is.

Sylar and Elle get there but the eclipse has happened. There’s a funny line when Elle asks if the Haitian is in the house. Without their powers, Noah gets the drop on them but Elle grabs a gun and tries to kill Noah. Claire, not noticing that people’s powers are failing left and right, throws herself in front of the bullet.

Noah takes her back to the Bennet house where Claire is happy to be able to feel pain again. Sandra wants to take Claire to the hospital but Noah tells them it’s a surface wound and he can fix it. Besides which, he expects Claire to regain her powers and heal up anyway. But she has a relapse and Sandra takes her to the hospital. Meanwhile, Noah takes a sniper rifle and goes after a now powerless Sylar.

The eclipse takes everyone’s powers away and it’s up to Mohinder to find out why. Mohinder is relieved, since his new powers were transforming him into some sort of bug thing. He wants to find Maya, but Arthur and Flint have other plans. Flint gets rough with Mohinder and explains that without powers he’s nobody. Flint doesn’t want to be a nobody anymore. You know, Flint, you’re not all that with your powers.

Angela is looking for people too. She tells Daphne and Matt Parkman to find Hiro. Daphne is upset because she betrayed both Matt and Arthur, thus she wonders how anyone could trust her. Hiro and Ando show up, guided by the 9th Wonders comic book. Ando tells Matt to fix Hiro but Matt can’t because 10-year-old Hiro thinks in Japanese. Daphne and Matt argue with Daphne asking Matt if he trusts her. He pauses for a few seconds before answering yes.

Daphne explains to Matt that for a speedster, seconds are like hours so she doesn’t believe he trusts her completely. He reads her mind about her home in Lawrence, Kansas and Daphne promptly runs there. Hiro teleports everyone there but the eclipse happens. Everyone is powerless thus Matt can’t use his thought powers to convince Daphne’s dad to let him in to see Daphne.

Hiro begins throwing corn at Matt, telling him the corn will stop when he accesses the hero within. Matt catches an ear of corn and waits until Daphne’s dad leaves. He goes up to the door which turns out not to be locked (gotta love living on a farm in Lawrence, Kansas) and goes in. Daphne explains that she didn’t want Matt to see her “like this,” and we get a big reveal – apparently Daphne was handicapped before she gained superhuman speed.

Hiro and Ando go to the local comic store because “It’s Wednesday! New Comic Book Day!” Seth Green tells them not to worry, there are enough “Red Hulk” comics for everyone. Green and Breckin Meyer realize the 9th Wonders book is coming to life around them.

Nathan and Peter have been asked to bring in the Haitian. Actually, Angela asked Nathan and Peter is just being an annoying, tagalong little brother. They argue about Peter’s future trip in which Nathan is Arthur’s puppet. Before too long the Haitian shows up and tells them he will not leave until he captures his evil brother, who is also currently powerless. Peter suggests they help him and before he and Nathan can finish arguing, the military forces led by the Haitian’s brother Baron capture Nathan. Nate tries to swing some political clout but Baron explains Arthur warned them Nate was coming. Tracy is talking to Arthur on the phone while appearing to work at Primatech with Angela. Whoever knows what Tracy’s up to, really.

“It’s a reboot,” “Knight” executive producer/showrunner Gary Scott Thompson said. “We’re moving away from the terrorist-of-the-week formula and closer to the original, making it a show about a man and his car going out and helping more regular people, everymen.”

With the change comes a couple of pink slips. Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Yancey Arias and Bruce Davison will all be leaving the series so the show can focus on the two leads.

Personally, I’m in line with all of this. I’ve never liked Poitier or her character so I’m happy to see her go. Bruce Davison is always a nice supporting actor to have around but his role as KITT’s creator has already been downplayed so much he won’t really be missed. Yancey Arias was a nice presence as the FBI liaison, but with the show heading away from the terrorist threat, he too is expendable.

For the moment it looks like Billy (Paul Campbell) and Zoe (Smith Cho) will be sticking around, and they are my favorite twosome in the KITT cave, so that’s good news there.

As for the plot switch, yes, it’s about time. Not that the show was altogether believable in the first place, but these full scale attacks week after week were getting hard to take. I’d much rather see Michael on the search for answers to his own mysterious backstory while helping out the little guy as he did in the original incarnation of the series.

Look for the new-new Knight Rider in January.
