Hancock Smashes Up L.A. on DVD Today

Premiere Of Sony Pictures'

Unconventional superhero Hancock crash lands on DVD today with three different versions: single disc rated and unrated versions and a two-disc edition with both versions and a digital copy of the film. He’s also available on Blu-Ray. Featurettes include Superhumans:The Making of Hancock and Building a Better Hero.

Hancock played to mixed reviews from critics but because of the amazing box office draw of Will Smith, made money anyway. The same can’t be said of Eddie Murphy’s SF-ish comedy Meet Dave. Murphy stars as the miniature captain of a spaceship made to look - just like Eddie Murphy. After this and The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Murphy is perilously close to being banned from the genre. This doesn’t have much in the way of features which is just as well. It’s hard to imagine that even Murphy’s diehard fans want to torture themselves learning more about how this train wreck happened.

John Noble: Skirting the Fringe

They say there is a fine line between genius and madness and nowhere is that more evident than on Fringe.

Dr. Walter Bishop is as likely to be found milking a cow in his lab as he is examining a new virus under a microscope. But playing a crazy genius is harder than it looks. Too much crazy and it becomes a comic performance. Too much genius and the audience can’t relate. Finding that balance means finding the humanity in a character and that’s where actor John Noble really hits the mark. To me, he’s like an Alzheimer’s patient who is all too aware of his mind slipping away. He can be funny and charming one minute and frustrated to the point of anger the next. Love him or hate him, you can’t talk about Fringe with out talking about Walter. And if you’re going to talk about Walter you might as well go right to the source:

A Q& A with Fringe star John Noble

So, how fun is it playing Walter Bishop?

John: It’s as much fun as it looks. It’s an absolute hoot. It’s obviously got serious aspects to it, but I treat it as a hoot to play the thing. Preparation, well, that’s probably the hardest bit, getting the timing right and doing the preparation on the scientific work, but working on Fringe is a great job. I mean it’s a great group of people to work with, and amazing scripts from the minds of J.J. Abrams and other people. They’re geniuses. Living inside their heads much be a very strange thing to do because they’re always coming up with something different.

But as fun as Walter is, he can be a little scary.

John: Yes. It’s the dark side to stuff, isn’t it? I guess it exists in all of us. But with Walter, because of who he is and how he is and how bright he is and how disturbed he is, it just sort of surfaces a bit more often and a bit more radically than it does in most of us. It’s certainly interesting to play, and it shocks the people I’m playing with at times. You see these shocked reactions from the other actors, but that all makes some good fun too.

Do you have a head for science?

Heroes Tonight: The Eclipse, Part I

peter-and-the-haitian-eclipse.JPGSo if the first eclipse gave our Heroes miraculous powers, what would happen during a second solar eclipse? Last week the Heroes and Villains learned of the coming eclipse, the Villains through Arthur’s use of Usutu’s pre-cog painting power and Hiro through a Ninth Wonders

comic book.

But hey, what’s really important here is that Seth Green debuts on Heroes tonight, working at Sam’s Comic Shop.Seth Green with Hiro and Ando? I smell comedy gold.

Say Hello to Star Trek’s New Uhura

Uhura_CharacterPoster_72DPI                                                                 This is the very lovely Zoe Saldana, seen in the first Pirates of the Caribbean flick and on TV shows including Law and Order:Special Victims Unit.

Zoe will also be in the James Cameron blockbuster Avatar, which reportedly caused some scheduling problems for the Star Trek film. In an ironic bit of trivia, Zoe also played a Trekkie in the Tom Hanks film Terminal.

Oh, and did we mention she’s stunning? Just thought it warranted bringing up again. I love the black and white motif of these Star Trek posters, very classy and classic.

I can’t wait until May 09.

After the axe fell on not one, not two, but three ABC shows yesterday producers and actors alike were probably reluctant to answer any phone calls if “ABC” was on the caller ID. But Life on Mars and its fans got actually good news as ABC has ordered four more episodes of the British time-travel remake.

USA Today reports that while Mars hasn’t been a ratings smash, ABC’s programming chief Steven McPherson is a huge fan. The show is about a New York detective who is transported to 1973 after a car accident. It’s one of numerous Brit remakes that hit American airwaves this year.

SCI FI Channel Presents Lost City Raiders

Lost City Raiders_01 This Saturday, SCI FI Channel presents a new original movie titled Lost City Raiders. A cross between Waterworld and Indiana Jones, the movie stars James Brolin and Ian Somerhalder as a father / son team of salvagers struggling to survive in a post-global warming world.

I had a chance to chat with both of them and I was surprised to hear how passionate they were about the ‘Go Green’ warning that is at the heart of this scifi action flick.

High Dive at Hollywood & Vine

The movie opens with a rather startling image of divers trolling through a submerged Los Angeles, the famous Hollywood sign barely rising above the sea. Global warming has done its dirtiest and now what remains of the population of the planet has retreated to high-ground. One problem, the oceans are still rising and there doesn’t seem to be a scientific way to stop it. So what do you do when science fails you? You turn to the ancient combination of faith and magic.

Enter salvage master John Kubiak (James Brolin) who has been recruited by the Vatican to find an ancient relic that could be the key to stopping the rising. Just like another single-minded father we know, Kubiak keeps the details from his sons Thomas (Jamie Thomas King) and Jack (Ian Somerhalder) while endangering all of their lives as they try to beat a rich real estate mogul from getting to the relic first.

“Actually Jim and I had some pretty fun stuff to do,” says Ian, “We were wet most of the time and I was on [a jetski] for weeks and weeks. It was a great bit of fun and I tell you, Mr. Brolin has a lot of humor when it comes to stunts. That’s for sure!”

Tonight on Clone Wars: Bombad Jedi

Star Wars:Clone Wars: Bombad Jedi

Air Date: November 21 at 9 on Cartoon Network.

It’s Jar Jar Binks to the Rescue in this week’s Star Wars: Clone Wars!

BombadJedi1

Jar Jar Binks and C-3PO team up to save Padmé Amidala from doom at the hands of evil Viceroy Nute Gunray. But the task becomes infinitely more complicated when the Separatists assume that the Gungan is a Jedi.

Director Jesse Yeh says Jar Jar’s overstated mannerisms and physicality make him a natural for The Clone Wars animated format.

“Jar Jar’s looks, expressions and his characteristic personality allow us to animate him to levels of exaggeration that really stand out from the other human characters or two-legged creatures,” Yeh says. “To me, his character is almost right out of the classic Disney or Warner Bros. cartoons. He is not always completely ‘there,’ he is clumsy and he seems to have a talent for making mistakes that really matter – sometimes in a constructive way, sometimes in a destructive way. I think it’s easy to be attracted by his innocent, childlike, naive side. He’s like a loveable, well-meaning friend – one you don’t want around when it’s a matter of life and death. But once you’ve lived through the crisis, you definitely want to invite him to the celebration party.”

Yeh directs action and comedy with equal skill, but he says it’s easier to find inspiration for the latter in his daily activities.
