True Blood 101: The Gals

June 10, 2009 by Cynthia

trueblood_anna_paquinWith True Blood coming back in only a couple of days, here’s a quick primer to help you get caught up with the characters.

Sookie Stackhouse is the star of the show. She’s a barmaid at Merlotte’s and she’s also telepathic. If she looks someone right in the eye she can usually read their thoughts - unless that someone is a vampire, which is one of the reasons she started dating Bill.

Sookie’s grandmother, whom she lived with, was murdered last season so now it’s just her and her brother, Jason.

Sookie is played by Anna Paquin.

trueblood_rutina_wesleyTara Thornton is Sookie’s best friend and she’s not afraid to speak her mind. She also works at Merlotte’s and once had a short relationship with the boss.

Tara may seem a little rough around the edges but she only wants what’s best for the people she cares about.

Tara is played by Rutina Wesley

Maryann Forrester claims to be a wealthy social worker who has nothing but good intentions. She bailed Tara out of jail when she was arrested on drunk driving charges, but Tara might have been swerving to avoid a naked Maryann in the road!

True Blood Comes Back with a Bang

May 11, 2009 by Cynthia

trueblood_s2_08_th  True Blood, the sexy, sultry vampire series comes back to HBO in just over a month. The 12-episode second season begins on June 14 and it all begins with a shocking new murder!

True Blood takes place in the not-too-distant future in a time where vampires have come out of the coffin to live among us. It’s all thanks to the invention of a synthetic blood called Tru Blood that allows vampires to survive without feeding on humans. That doesn’t mean that they’ve stopped all together, though. Some vampires still like feeding for sport and for others (and their human partners) it’s one lollapalooza of a sexual high.

Here’s what’s coming up on the second season:

Episode #13:  “Nothing But the Blood”

True Blood Season Two Promo Pics

April 1, 2009 by Cynthia

True_Blood_S2_10 Belly up to the bar, boys and girls, True Blood is coming back on June 14th and HBO sent me the pics to prove it. Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin will be mixing it once again and you can bet there will be plenty of sexy and scary moments from this freshman hit.

If you follow the novels by Charlaine Harris, you’ll be ahead of the curve for this new season, but fear not (or maybe you should) there will be some twists and turns even Charlaine’s True_Blood_S2_04readers didn’t see coming.

Paquin Wins Globe for True Blood

January 13, 2009 by brian

Anna Paquin Sam Trammell EP10 Prashant Gupta In what has to be considered an upset, True Blood star Anna Paquin walked away with the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Drama. It was a star-studded race including the likes of Sally Field and Kyra Sedgwick.

Blood was up for Best TV Drama but lost out to critical darling Mad Men. It’s another important development for what is becoming a breakout hit for HBO. True Blood was the only new show to draw any love in a Globes ceremony that celebrated old favorites like 30 Rock and Law & Order. The Globe joins Paquin’s best supporting actress Oscar for The Piano in her trophy case.

After her win, Paquin talked with reporters about being a “pale brunette from New Zealand playing a Southern tanned waitress.” She noted that unlike her win for The Piano (when she was 11), she’s now old enough to celebrate the award with a drink and can stay out past 10 p.m. Funny!

TelevisionWeek Poll Praises True Blood

January 7, 2009 by brian

anna-paquin-stephen-moyer-1-jamie-trueblood-thumb True Blood, HBO’s freshman supernatural tale of vampires, shapeshifters and mind-readers is still getting great buzz. In a TVWeek semiannual Critics Poll, the freshman series placed fifth among TV writers’ favorite shows. That made True Blood the only new series to place in the top 10 and one of only five new shows to make the top 25.

The show has also garnered two Golden Globe nominations. It debuted to modest viewership but kept growing through word-of-mouth and now HBO estimates as many as 7 million people watch the show. That number includes HBO’s numerous weekly rebroadcasts and video on demand viewings.

TVWeek also showered some posthumous love on recently canceled Pushing Daisies. The quirky fantasy dramedy about a piemaker who can reanimate the dead with his touch placed first in last year’s poll. With its cancellation all but a foregone conclusion, the buzz was a little less this time around. But Daisies still placed eighth in the rankings. Sad to see you go, Daisies. Sad to see you go.

True Blood Earns Golden Globe Noms

December 11, 2008 by brian

Anna Paquin Stephen Moyer 1 Jamie Trueblood HBO’s vampire drama True Blood earned favor with the Golden Globe voters, garnering a nomination for best dramatic series and a best dramatic actress nod for star Anna Paquin.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its picks for the coveted golden hardware today. Blood will go against another HBO show In Treatment, Showtime’s Dexter, Fox’s House,  and critical darling AMC’s Mad Men.  Paquin will compete against Sally Field for ABC’s Brothers and Sisters, Mariska Hargitay for NBC’s Law and Order:SVU and Kyra Sedgwick of TNT’s The Closer.

True Blood is an adaptation of a series of novels by Charlaine Harris that offer a very unconventional take on the vampire mythos. A blood substitute allows vampires to come “out of the coffin” and integrate into everyday society. But not every vampire is on board with that plan.

True Blood Episode 1.6 “Cold Ground” Recap

Air Date: Oct. 12, 2008

We pick up with Sookie finding Gran dead and Bill’s there shortly after - awkward. And so is Sam. This is all very uncomfortable. Sookie tries to wrap her head around everything and Sam tries to comfort her. He’s sorry for the fight they had and Sookie has a great line as she asks if Sam could apologize to her some other time.

Sam and Bill of course have to bow up to each other. Sam threatens to kill Bill if anything happens to Sookie. The local authorities interview Bill, who says he doesn’t think Gran was the intended victim. Sam stays with her because Bill has to get home before dawn. Sookie refuses to leave the house and even begins cleaning the place up. Of all the disturbing images this show throws at us, just the simple one of Sookie cleaning up her own grandmother’s blood is going to haunt me for a minute.

Despite a critical savaging of the first couple of episodes, HBO’s new unconventional vampire series has been steadily gaining traction with viewers. B5’s Media Scribbler reports that HBO has ordered a second season of True Blood, which chronicles the adventures of telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse and her vampire boyfriend Bill Compton.

The readers on our comment boards have so far been unimpressed. But the offbeat vampire show will get at least two seasons to prove itself to viewers now. Not surprising, as it comes from Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball and stars Anna Paquin. With the money HBO’s already spent promoting it, it would need to do some dismal numbers not to get a greenlight for next year.
