With heroes and villains alike rendered powerless by another solar eclipse, Primatech and Pinehearst continue their battle for humanity’s future. It’s just going to be a little harder to fight without superpowers. You know, actual fisticuffs and maybe even some thinking before acting. Nah, Peter Petrelli’s still around. All that thinking is for suckers.
And without powers, is Claire Bennet still the catalyst that can give people powers? More importantly, can she survive a gaping bullet wound without her special abilities?

When last we left our Heroes, Arthur Petrelli had just removed Hiro’s ability to travel through space and time. That is the definition of not good. Tonight, Matt Parkman tries to communicate with Angela Petrelli, who is trapped in a coma.
Peter is concerned because he knows Future Claire will kill him. And Mohinder realizes he really jacked up the formula and is trying to put things right. Maybe Mohinder and Peter should just go somewhere and chill out. So far, their attempts to “help” have been pretty disastrous. I’m just saying.

Tonight on Heroes, we’re going to learn more about what makes Claire Bennet special. Other than being incredibly hot, we mean. Remember Sylar told Claire he couldn’t kill her if he had wanted to.
While Peter, who has Claire’s powers, can be killed by bullets in the back of the head or decapitation ala Highlander. Oh and by the way, two characters are taking the long day’s journey into night, so to speak. Our Superhero Profiles says that both a hero and villain will die tonight. Readers, who do you think will be leaving the land of the living?

Claire still has her healing power but now she doesn’t feel pain. This creeps her out because the pain always made her feel human. She makes another video and apparently has been letting trains hit her in the hopes she’ll feel something. Future Peter stops her and wants to know what in the world she’s doing.

Sylar kills two company agents but Elle is still trying to convince her father that she can catch the villain. She leaves the room for a moment and finds Daddy’s been scalped by Sylar. Elle lets Noah Bennet/HRG out and he puts a couple of bullets into Sylar. Since he’s got Claire’s powers, that has no effect and he telekinetics Noah into the wall. He’s about to steal Elle’s powers but she shocks him unconscious.

The problem is that her powers shorted out Level 5’s power grid, unleashing a dozen villains supposedly just as bad as Sylar. We’ll see about that. Angela informs Elle that her father was the only reason she kept a job and now she’s fired.

Things are weird with Hiro and Ando now that Hiro’s seen a future in which his best friend betrays him. Hiro has private detectives scour his office and they find a fingerprint that ID’s the speedstar, Daphne Millbrook. He teleports himself and Ando there and finds that she’s used her speed to become the world’s greatest thief.

Hiro tells Ando what happened in the future and Ando reassures Hiro it will never happen. They set a trap using her most prized possession, a medal from the first race she ever won. Ando is bait in said trap as they allow Daphne to get away with both her half of the formula and the medal. But Hiro placed a tracking device on Daphne so they can follow her to the other half of the formula. Ando gets cut and thinks Hiro let that happen because of the future.

An intrepid reporter played by The Greatest American Hero himself, William Katt, has tracked down Tracy/Niki Saunders. He threatens to go public with the connection and even has video of her and Nathan Petrelli in a compromising position. When he says deadline is in a few minutes, her powers go critical and she freezes him solid. He then shatters into a million pieces.

The aforementioned Nathan Petrelli instantly recognizes her as Niki also. She denies it and Linderman shows up, telling Nathan to take the senator’s seat. He throws Linderman out but later during a chess match agrees to go senatorial. A nurse walks in and asks Nathan who he’s talking to. Linderman reveals that no one else can see him. Very Sixth Sense – ish as at no point did I realize nobody else ever acknowledged Linderman’s presence.

More film referential fun as Mohinder has fly-like abilities and even has his skin doing strange things. He and Maya make love afterwards just like Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis back in The Fly remake.

It seems to finally be dawning on Future Peter that he has really messed things up. Neither Sylar catching Claire or the mass villain breakout at Level 5 happened in his timeline. Oopsie!

And Heroes leaves us with one jaw dropping moment at the end when Angela taunts Sylar, calling him Gabriel. He’s upset and she promises to nurture him like a mother should. He tells her she’s not his mother and she responds that she in fact - is his mother. Oh no she didn’t!

Spoilers after yon jump!

Things begin four years in the future with Peter telling Claire everything went wrong when Nathan revealed them all to the world at his press conference. Claire has a gun and wants to blow him away. How that would work with all Peter’s powers, I have no idea. And sure enough it doesn’t as he flies to the past and – shoots Nathan. What the – ? Then he places the Peter in our time into the body of an inmate at Level 5. Seriously, what power does Future Peter not have?

But Nathan somehow comes back and believes God has made him a messenger. He walks out of the hospital and into a church where with TV cameras rolling, he delivers a passionate speech about the meaning of life. Part of that speech is the show self-referential “Save Ourselves, Save The World.” Niki Saunders (we think) in the guise of a political handler named Tracy and her employer/lover the governor of New York see the speech. Niki/Tracy thinks Nathan would be perfect for a vacant Senate seat in New York. Linderman comes into the hospital and takes the credit for saving Nathan.

Claire’s having a rough enough day following her father’s shooting, then she opens the door and Sylar’s there. In the ensuing fight she stabs him, but he gets the better of her and opens up her head. She asks if he’s going to eat her brain and in a funny moment he tells her that’s disgusting. Sylar gets her power and Claire asks if he’s going to kill her. Sylar tells her she knows nothing about her power and that she can’t die. And now neither can he.

Hiro meanwhile is very bored. He’s longing for his new destiny and it comes in the form of a DVD from his father. His father tells Hiro that the family is trusted with a powerful secret inside a safe he shouldn’t ever open. Of course, he opens it and there’s another DVD telling him it must never fall into the wrong hands. It’s half a formula and no sooner than he takes it out a speedster makes off with it. Hiro’s time stopping allows him to catch her but she can still move and knocks him out.

To see what the potential effects of the formula could be, Hiro goes into the future and sees chaos of course. Even more than that, he sees Ando kill him with what looks like “force lightning.” I love this show.

Mohinder and Maya discuss her powers and she almost loses control. Mohinder figures out her powers are keyed by adrenaline and is able to make a serum that could give anyone powers. Of course, he ends up injecting himself with it despite Maya’s objections. A couple of guys attack him and get whooped up for their trouble. So it’s superhuman strength for him then? We’ll see, won’t we?

Matt Parkman catches Future Peter trying to make off with the murder weapon so he teleports him into the desert somewhere. Future Peter may end up being more dangerous than Sylar.
