The panel began with an airing of the pilot. I wish they’d show only an abbreviated version at these things because it really ate into the Q&A time with the panel after the fact. I felt bad for them, actually, because quite a few people groaned when they thought the pilot was over and it wasn’t. Really, folks, I get that you’re not interested in this panel, but you don’t have to be rude about it.

Once the Q&A began, Kevin Williamson and the cast patiently fielded  numerous questions about jumping on the True Blood bandwagon and capitalizing on the success of Twilight. Seriously, do these people not realize that vampires in fiction go back a lot further than that. Can we talk Angel, Forever Knight, Dark Shadows, Dracula! Twilight and True Blood didn’t invent the genre and I believe that the original publication of the Vampire Diaries books pre-dates both of them.

I like the show. It’s Dawson’s Creek with vampires and I’m good with that. I adore Ian Somerhalder and I’m learning to like Paul and Nina and it is helmed by Kevin Williamson who has done this sort of thing before.

And I’m way off track, aren’t I?

Fringe

There were no new clips and no big reveals at the panel but I really enjoyed seeing the live interaction between the cast members. Joshua Jackson commanded much of the attention and he took great pleasure out of the fact that he could make the audience cheer by saying almost anything, including the word “rutabaga.”

Jaskia Nicole (Astrid) was on the panel and as cute as a baby kitten as she too tried to make the crowd cheer with random words.  During the Q&A, an old friend of hers from college got up to ask how she was enjoying her new found fame. With lights blinding her, she strained to see who was behind the mic and once she saw the girl, Jaskia let out a girly squeal and went running to the edge of the stage for a hug, then bubbled on about how they had to do lunch. Normally, I would be annoyed by having panel time eaten up with personal nonsense but Jaskia is so fun to watch, I actually enjoyed the encounter. I hope she gets to play a bigger role in the show this year because I think she’s very under used.

John Noble talked about the origins of his accent on the show, his handling of Walter’s mental illness and the general way he makes Walter’s comedy bits so endearing and believable. John also opted to take on the question of a romantic relationship between Peter and Olivia, saying he won’t allow it because all romance in the lab is outlawed. (Guess that lets out Astrid and Peter, too huh?)

Anna Torv was also on the panel but she had little to say. For a more detailed recap, check out Zap2It. If you’ve got the time to spare, Fringe Bloggers has the entire panel up in pieces but all in one place (very nice of them).

One last note: At the Fringe panel we were all given tickets which could be redeemed for a promo newspaper identical to the one seen in the alternate universe finale.

I’m tempted to stop typing right now. But Kripke is in his hot tub yelling, “I don’t hear typing!” so I guess I better keep at it.

My first day at Comic Con was a little less hectic than usual since I decided to stay in a hotel for the night. I even took one of those pedicabs to the convention center and it was a nice, relaxing way to start the day.

My first stop was the exhibit hall and incredibly, I could actually see the floor! There must have been some major panels going on upstairs because I had a chance to walk and even see some of the great booths. I made a beeline for my favorite booth – Warner Brothers to see if I could spot any sign of the Winchester Brothers and I found them — or as close as I was going to get since Jensen and Jared weren’t scheduled to be at the con. (I held out hope that they might surprise us, but alas, they didn’t.)

I did manage to snag one of those cool Vampire Diaries / Human Target bags. Looks like there was no Supernatural bag this year, or did I miss it? On the last day of the con, they did hand out buttons with Dean and an evil-looking Sam on a white background with the birds and inkblots behind them. They also handed out mini-posters for their new shows but I slapped my own hand to keep from taking them as I still have a pile of posters from last year that I haven’t touched.

BBC America had a popular booth with a life-sized Dalek, there was a Wolverine wax statue that looked like it might move any minute and Fox had a nice display of Futurama action figures. Fox gave away an autograph book that had postcards from their shows in the front and blank pages at the back for signing.

Bigger is better at Comic Con, so one studio brought in the actual Black Beauty from the new Green Hornet movie, another had the bumblebee Camaro and a 12 foot Transformer, all of which was dwarfed by an enormous machine from Avatar!

For those who like to interact with their exhibits, you could jump into an electric chair and take a virtual reality trip through your nightmares. You could be photographed stepping up to the Stargate or get a Village ID badge courtesy of  AMC’s The Prisoner.

And check out the lovely ladies from the V Recruitment Center. They were handing out pamphlets detailing how you can become part of the Vistors’ ambassador program, an item that is actually seen in the V pilot. As an added personal touch (which is so in tune with the series) instead of simply handing out V buttons, you had to allow the girls to pin it on your badge lanyard. I’ll bet that bit of up close and personal converted more than a few male con attendees into V fans.

Up next, I’ll talk about the V panel, also Fringe, Smallville, Supernatural and John Barrowman flirts with everyone on the Torchwood panel.
