Last summer, I interviewed America Olivo in regard to her role in the new movie Bitch Slap. Coincidentally, she had just come back from filming Friday the 13th. Coincidentally, she had just come back from filming Friday the 13th. The story of how she got from one movie to the other is just one in a series of crazy good news/bad news events in her life going back to the time she had a record deal with Dreamworks (and then they folded) a pilot deal with UPN (just before they folded) and a trip to the Latin Grammy’s that consisted of her walking the red carpet, entering the building, leaving the building and leaving town in the space of an hour.

America: I have lived like a cat with nine lives. I don’t even understand from one month to the next, how wacky, wacky things get around here. Part of the wackiness was getting the lead in Bitch Slap (an homage to the exploitation films of the 60’s) from out of nowhere. I got a call from the director, who had seen me in another movie which I haven’t even seen yet. He had this situation where he had a girl to play the lead, Camero, and that person was going to take another job. He was stressing out because they were going to start production in like a week. He’s like, ‘you’re my Camero.’ I’m like, ‘is this porn? Because I’m not ready yet in my career.’

Under the gun, America read the script and fell in love with the part.

America: The three leads have major push-up bras and as much skin as possible exposed, but at the same time my character is basically a man. I mean, what men get to do in movies. I get to drive muscle cars and motorbikes and beat-up everybody! And I’m tough, I’m in prison, I’ve got tats all over me, my fist says pain on it, P-A-I-N. I’m just beatin’ the crap outta people for the whole movie and the dialogue is just absolutely hilarious.

But working on Bitch Slap took it’s toll on the lovely actress.

America: Doing this movie, I nearly killed myself. I literally exhausted myself to a degree that I would’ve thought I could handle. I’d come home every night, a different ethnicity from the dirt all over me, head-to-toe bloody and gross and sore, but it was so rewarding when we actually got to see footage. It was worth every bump and bruise and cut and I mean, I’ve lost pieces of skin that I don’t think I’ll ever get back from doing this.

As a reward, America was given a Burke Williams spa package as a gift from the producers. But before she could use it. . . .

America: The last day of shooting, I get a call. They need somebody immediately to get on an airplane to Austin to do Friday the 13th, Michael Bay’s movie. They are in production, they’re going to lose their location and they need somebody now. I’m going, ‘I don’t care if Steven Spielberg wants me for the lead of anything, I just need a facial. And they’re like, please, you gotta get down there, it’s a Michael Bay movie!

So I pulled it together, put my stuff on tape, ‘cause Michael Bay still had to see it, with blood and charcoal and everything in my hair, fingernails missing and when I say missing, I’m not talking about broken, I’m not talking about, I just broke my nail when I picked up my purse! I’m like, ripped off disgusting. The casting director is trying to clean me up for the video — do you mind if I take your hair and maybe try to make it look more like. . .oh! I wouldn’t do that! She picks up my hair and it is one piece, like a big helmet of blood and soot stuck together. She’s like, ‘oh dear god, what happened to you?’ I’m like, ‘Bitch Slap, just please, lets roll the tape now.’

Then the waiting begins.

America: I got the call at like 3 o’clock in the morning, I went to the airport, got on a flight, I thought I was going to be dropped off at this five-star-hotel which sounded really, really, nice. I didn’t get to go to the hotel, I just went straight to set because they needed to shoot all my scenes out because they were going to lose the location. They’d been filming for weeks and I just popped in and basically did all close-ups on me! I don’t think I got to sleep really or unpack my bag and then I was told to get back on the plane and that’s all.

But even in that short amount of time, America got attached to her fellow actors.

America: Big cast, fun, fun, fun, fun group of people and even in the little bit of time that I was there, I realized how tight everybody was and they immediately embraced me and I was in with the fun, you know? Like one of the guys. . . with long hair and boobs. And yeah, a pleasure, pleasure working with Derek, who plays Jason. Very scary man. Very, scary man.

Of course, America isn’t exactly what you’d call a brave soul.

America: My mother didn’t help Growing up, I’m like, please tell me that Jason isn’t real and she’d say, ‘you know, the first form of manifestation is thought, so you can create him if you want to.’ Now I am one of those people who, in the middle of the night, if I have to go to the bathroom, I will do anything not to have to get up. I’ll be like, come on go back to sleep, don’t do it; then I’ll get up and of course, right when I get up some image from one of the classic horror movies will pop into my mind, and I have five images that will never be erased from when I was a kid, and they just will pop in, you can’t control it. AUAGH! Run back to bed! I’m a total chicken like that.

So what’s next for America Olivo?

America: I’m sitting at home, waiting for that next random call! ‘Can you be on a plane to Dubai?’ Okay, sure!

While America waits, you can see her in Friday the 13th. It opens in theaters today – Friday the 13th, of course.

He meets up with another group of potential victims and the slaughter begins (or should that be continues) as Jason arrives to tear up the place.

Jared spent a good portion of the last two days giving interviews and you’ll find them all over the net including some great remotes from a variety of CW affiliates such as KTLA. In the interviews Jared jokes about the audition process which was him wearing a bra while running around in the woods screaming (he’s joking) , Friday the 13th as a morality tale (he’s joking) and getting hand surgery with only a general anethestic so he could watch (not joking.)

Friday the 13th opens in theaters everywhere this Friday, the 13th, of course.

Now it’s time for the other Winchester Brother to make his mark in the slasher movie world. Supernatural star Jared Padalecki is busting out on the big screen with an all-new chapter in the Friday the 13th saga.

“I was in middle school when I saw the original “Friday The 13th” and I remember it scaring the life out of me,” laughs Jared Padalecki. “When I found out they were remaking the movie, I was very excited about getting involved.”

Here’s how the new movie lays out:

Searching for his missing sister, Clay Miller (Jared Padalecki) heads up to the eerie woods of legendary Crystal Lake, where he stumbles on the creaky remains of rotting old cabins behind moss-covered trees.

And that’s not the only thing lying in wait under the brush.

Against the advice of police and cautions from the locals, Clay pursues what few leads he has in the search for his missing sister, Whitney (Amanda Righetti), with the help of Jenna (Danielle Panabaker), a young woman he meets among a group of college kids up for an all-thrills weekend. But they are all about to find much more than they bargained for.

Little do they know, they’ve entered the domain of one of the most terrifying specters in American film history–the infamous killer who haunts Crystal Lake, armed with a razor-sharp machete… Jason Voorhees.

“Jared Padalecki was the first person cast in the film and it really set the tone,” says producer Brad Fuller.

“We were already fans of Jared’s from ‘Supernatural,’” notes Andrew Form. “He’s really talented and hardworking, plus he’s a big guy, so we knew we had someone who could probably give the villain a run for his money.”

Friday the 13th opens on Friday, February 13 — how cool is that?

If you look around the net today, you’ll find dozens of interviews and articles about the new Friday the 13th movie starring Jared Padalecki of Supernatural. Not to be outdone by all of them, I present to you some of my favorite quotes from the Friday panel at this past summer’s Comic Con.
It’s interesting to note, that unlike the fans who packed the house for the Supernatural panel, the Friday the 13th panel was not only light on attendees, even the ones that came weren’t easily swayed making for some awkward moments.

Jared and Derek Mears (Jason) did their best to liven the crowd up with a little humor. Jared went for the usual “Thursday the 12th prequel” gag while Mears went straight for the female fans in the audience.

“Have you guys seen Jared with his shirt off?”

To which Jared adds, “by shirt he means pants.”

Okay, now the Supernatural fan girls are happy let’s see what we can do for the Friday fans.

On Derek’s Portrayal of Jason

Jared Padalecki: [Derek is] an absolutely incredible Jason. I’ve seen the movies and just from having filmed with him, there’s a whole new level of scare than just ‘grrrrr, I’m big and I’ve got a weapon.’ It feels very real. It’s not just like, ‘there’s this slow walking guy that’s going to find us’. Now you feel like, ‘oh my god, this guy’s the real deal and he’s after me!’

It’s a very real, raw scare, it’s not like, argh I’m going to turn around and he’s going to be there. It’s like the difference between fighting a hippo and fighting a lion. The lion’s going to get me wherever I go, it’s not like ‘ah I’ll just get out of the water.’

On the Physical Demands

Amanda Righetti: It was physically and emotionally demanding but going into it I kind of looked on it as an endurance game, knowing what was going to be asked of us as actors. What you don’t realize is how much your body can take. When you’re in it you don’t feel it, and then you wake up the next day and you realize how many times you were thrown around the day before and how your body’s suddenly not working in the same way that it was the day before.

Jared: There were times when I know I woke up and I was sore and I was like, ‘who kicked my ass?” ‘Oh yeah, I filmed yesterday.’ It’s not like, ‘Oh my life is so bad, I’m in a movie, but when you go from doing one fight scene and you’re just dead and you want to sleep and you’re shooting from like 6 pm to 6 am so you wake up at noon because the sun’s coming in and you’re like, ‘I’m not rested enough,’ and the sun’s up and so I’m up and then you know that you’re going to shoot another 12 hours of running around and fighting and Derek’s a big guy um so… yeah, its very physically demanding.

Derek Mears: I was really impressed by you two, a lot of times they had stunt doubles, where lots of times they didn’t want to use stunt doubles and I physically manhandled each of them and beat the crap out of them. They were down and they were all ‘let’s keep going, man’ we were like ‘we can get your double’ and they were ‘oh no no no no it would look better with me so let’s do it.

And Derek Sums it All Up

Derek : What I’m really excited about is that the script is actually smart, it’s not just a regular slasher film. Doesn’t dumb it down, you see the guy walking around killing a bunch of people. It basically takes the best parts of two through four, kind of puts them all together, it brings the series back to reality where you understand what Jason’s actually doing.. .and that it’s. It’s pretty intense.

Nana Visitor, best known to sci-fi fans as Major Kira Nerys from the Star Trek spinoff Deep Space Nine, will appear in the Friday the 13th franchise reboot. Obsessed With Film said the news comes from the past weekend’s Starfest convention.
