Blood was up for Best TV Drama but lost out to critical darling Mad Men. It’s another important development for what is becoming a breakout hit for HBO. True Blood was the only new show to draw any love in a Globes ceremony that celebrated old favorites like 30 Rock and Law & Order. The Globe joins Paquin’s best supporting actress Oscar for The Piano in her trophy case.

After her win, Paquin talked with reporters about being a “pale brunette from New Zealand playing a Southern tanned waitress.” She noted that unlike her win for The Piano (when she was 11), she’s now old enough to celebrate the award with a drink and can stay out past 10 p.m. Funny!

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its picks for the coveted golden hardware today. Blood will go against another HBO show In Treatment, Showtime’s Dexter, Fox’s House, and critical darling AMC’s Mad Men. Paquin will compete against Sally Field for ABC’s Brothers and Sisters, Mariska Hargitay for NBC’s Law and Order:SVU and Kyra Sedgwick of TNT’s The Closer.

True Blood is an adaptation of a series of novels by Charlaine Harris that offer a very unconventional take on the vampire mythos. A blood substitute allows vampires to come “out of the coffin” and integrate into everyday society. But not every vampire is on board with that plan.

True Blood weathered initial mixed reviews but continued to gain a strong following all season, ending with 2.4 million people tuning in for the finale. HBO says that 66 percent jump in viewers from the premiere is an even faster growth track than The Sopranos saw its first year.

Associated Press estimates that between HBO’s repeated showings and people watching through services like On Demand, nearly 7 million viewers a week are seeing True Blood.

The source material is experiencing a renaissance as well. All seven of Harris’ Southern Vampire novels are on the New York Times bestseller list.

NBC will broadcast the Golden Globes Jan. 11.
