A lone gunman stands at the end of a dusty, barren, western street. Across from him . . . a giant bug.

Actually, this town isn’t big enough for even one of them, if the one is a giant bug creature from outer space.

It’s High Plains Invader and it’s a Syfy original movie starring James Marsters and Cindy Sampson.

It’s the early 20th century, and this small western mining town is invaded by giant insectoid alien creatures whose only mission is to mine uranium to fuel their spaceship – but they’ll kill anyone or anything that gets in their way. Who can save them? Only a ” retired outlaw” who was about to be hanged, so he’s got nothing left to lose.

Wait. . .retired outlaw? Is there a pension plan for that?

I haven’t seen it, but boy, I want to. Watch High Plains Invader, Sunday, August 30th at 9:00 on Syfy.

Marsters will play dangerous terrorist leader Barnabus Greeley. Driven by moralistic and yet carnal desires, this unpredictable villain is constantly torn by his conflicting motivations.

Sounds like a role he was born to play!

It’s funny, years ago, I interviewed James when he was just starting out on Buffy. I asked him what he loved most about playing the role of Spike and he said he loved that he could fight all night long and not wake up in jail the next morning. That, and the boots.

In other casting news, Firefly’s Gina Torres will be joining Gossip Girl for a short arc. According to TV Guide, she’ll be playing Vanessa’s free spirit, home-schooling mother.

If you watch CBS this season, you’ll see a few more familiar sci fi faces. Point Pleasant’s Grant Show is a regular on the new Jenna Elfman comedy Accidentally on Purpose and I’m pretty sure I saw Reaper’s Christine Willes (Gladys) in the pilot for The Good Wife.

Next, on July 7, it’s the premiere of their new series Warehouse 13.

Two Secret Service agents find themselves abruptly transferred to a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse’s caretaker Artie (Saul Rubinek) charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself. CCH Pounder guest-stars as Artie’s boss Mrs. Federic, along with Allison Scagliotti as Claudia Donovan, a young, hip, brilliant techno-wiz.

July 8th marks the return of Ghost Hunters International. Six new episodes will air this summer with the rest following later in 2010.

On July 10, Eureka returns with 10 new episodes. Season 3.5 picks up where Eureka left off at the mid-season cliffhanger with Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) being removed from his job as Eureka’s sheriff and Allison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) announcing that she is expecting her recently-deceased husband’s baby. Ghost Hunters returns August 19 with all new episodes as Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson and the TAPS team investigate and attempt to debunk claims of otherworldly activity.

SCI FI also has some great guest stars heading up their summer movies.

Peta Wilson takes on Malibu Shark Attack. Rick Schroeder fends off the dreaded Hellhounds, Jason Gedrick takes on Sand Serpents and Torchwood and Buffy star James Marsters takes the lead in High Plains Invaders. Here’s the scoop on that one:

Every year, the Paley Center for Media presents The PaleyFestival, a grouping of panel discussions honoring the best that TV has to offer. They have a long history of paying tribute not just to the highest rated shows on TV, but to those who do things a little differently.

One of the first PaleyFest panels I ever saw was for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it was a terrific look inside the machine that made that show work.

A decade after the series premiere, (can you believe that!) the gang was reunited at the 2008 Paley Festival in front of a sell out crowd. Creator Joss Whedon joined cast members Sarah Michelle Geller, Seth Green, Amber Benson, Nicholas Brendon, Charisma Carpenter, Emma Caulfield, James Marsters, and Michelle Trachtenberg along with series writer/producers David Greenwalt and Marti Noxon for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what is still a benchmark for genre TV. It was a fabulous night and now it’s all on DVD.

The Buffy Reunion DVD is only available through the website: www.paleycenter.org. The DVD includes the panel, fan questions and answers, backstage photos and video. It’s priced at 19.95 and all proceeds benefit the Paley Center which is working hard to preserve our television history.

First up, Captain Jack (John Barrowman) calls on Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman, Doctor Who) to join the Torchwood team — Gwen (Eve Myles), Owen (Burn Gorman), Toshiko (Naoko Mori), and Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) — to help investigate mysterious deaths. When the trail leads to a sinister medical testing center, Martha must go undercover. But has Torchwood underestimated how far the testing center’s director, Professor Copley (Alan Dale of Ugly Betty) will go to find medical breakthroughs? How safe is the Torchwood team?

But that’s not all!

Following episode six, the Torchwood team members, deep in shock, have to face their darkest hour. In an effort to put things right, Captain Jack unleashes a primal force that uses Torchwood as a conduit to wreck havoc across Earth, aided by the Weevils and their newly-appointed King. Then the night before her wedding, Gwen is juggling work with her bachelorette party, when an alien shape shifter leaves her carrying more than she bargained for. As everyone gathers for the ceremony, Jack must destroy her big day, unless one of the three mothers present finds a means to stop him.

Before the season ends, James Marsters returns as charismatic-but-psychopathic Captain John Hart, along with guest appearances by Richard Briers (Hamlet, Monarch of the Glen), Ruth Jones (Saxondale, Gavin & Stacey) and Nerys Hughes (The Liver Birds, District Nurse).

BBC America’s new Supernatural Saturday line-up kicks off with Doctor Who, season three, on Saturdays 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 PT, followed by an encore episode of Torchwood at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT and the U.S. premiere episode at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
