Top Chef Prepares the Lost Supper
Bravo’s new series Top Chef Masters pits four culinary wizards against each other in challenges that really put their creativity to the test. Next week, the chefs will be asked to prepare The Lost Supper. No, not The Last Supper, but a dinner based on the foods that you would find on Lost!
The master chefs for this round are Wylie Dufresne (wd~50), Suzanne Tracht (Jar), Graham Elliot Bowles (Graham Elliot Restaurant) and Elizabeth Falkner (Orson). They’ll need to create a fabulous three course meal using ingredients such as fish, wild boar, fresh fruits and canned goods chosen by The Dharma Initiative, among other island specialties. And to make sure they get it right, Lost co-creators Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof will be sitting in on the judging panel.
It all happens on Top Chef Masters, Wednesday, June 17 at 10:00 on Bravo.

Javier Grillo-Marxuach Signs on to Day One

Day One is NBC’s new apocalyptal aftermath series helmed by Heroes and Lost producer Jesse Alexander.
The story follows a band of eclectic neighbors from the same apartment building in Los Angeles who are forced to ban together in order to survive. Now they’ve got some hefty talent backing them up in the form of Javier Grillo-Marxuach (seen here with his friends from Lost) the creative genius behind the underrated Middleman series along with Erik Oleson from E-Ring and The Agency. Sounds like this show’s survival chances just went up a notch.
And speaking of The Middleman, Grillo-Marxuach announced on his blog that the DVD would be ready for release sometime this summer. If you’re a fan, and you really should be, check out the Shout! Factory website for the evolution of the DVD cover art. It’s all good stuff.

Lost Hits Its Explosive 100th Episode

This post contains spoilers from Lost’s 100th Episode, so steer clear if you haven’t seen it yet. Besides which, if you haven’t seen it yet get thee to a Tivo and check it out. It’s head trippy.

Could Lost Be Coming to Hulu?

You’ve probably seen those Hulu commercials with Eliza Dushku, who even looks hot as an alien sent to eat our brains. We could possibly soon see Evangeline Lilly threatening to exterminate the human race in commercials for the NBC Universal TV/Internet venture.
Paid Content is reporting that Disney could grant access to its ABC programming in exchange for equity in Hulu. The service would certainly benefit from having a show like Lost, which warrants repeat viewings to figure out what the heck just happened. There’s still no clear indication whether Disney programs like Aaron Stone would be part of the deal.
The sci-fi tinged commercials with Dushku and Alec Baldwin are part of a huge national branding campaign to make Hulu a household name. Getting the Disney empire behind Hulu would be a gigantic step in garnering that name recognition.

FOX Moves Idol Against Lost

What, you thought FOX was merely content to kill its own sci-fi shows? No, the network is now setting its aim on former ABC juggernaut Lost. The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd tells us American Idol is moving to 9 p.m. Wednesday nights, putting it head to head with Lost for the rest of the season.
ABC’s former watercooler show is losing viewers weekly and having a heavyweight like Idol move into the same timeslot is not good news. FOX’s new project Lie To Me will move to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. The Tim Roth vehicle has more than held its own against Lost, so it makes sense FOX would want to see what it does without any big competition.
I’m a Tim Roth fan, but sheesh. Taking into account Psych and The Mentalist, Lie to Me gives us three TV shows on the air right now about a guy that can tell who the criminal in the room is just by looking at them. Yet somehow shows like Sarah Connor can’t draw an audience. Dismayed sigh.

This Winter Is a TV Wonderland

These are weird, weird times to be a TV writer - or viewer, for that matter. As the industry still digs itself out of the disaster that was the Writers’ Strike, we get a ridiculous 71 shows premiering new episodes this month. TV Guide has put together a comprehensive list here.
Yes, some of these shows are new shows that are probably already as good as canceled. I’m looking at you, Game Show in My Head and Howie Do It. But there are some bigtime shows like Battlestar Galactica (Jan. 16 at 9 p.m. CT) and Lost (Jan. 21, 8 p.m. CT).
The CW jumps to the forefront as both Smallville and Supernatural give us new episodes Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. CT respectively. Overall, this is like a belated Christmas gift for sci-fi and fantasy fans. Will it ever be like this again? It’s hard to say, but I suspect it will have something to do with the ratings from this “winter season” of TV.
We know right now that we’re going to lose Galactica after this year, although Caprica looks poised to replace it. Smallville is very much up in the air as well. Most reports we’re hearing indicate Knight Rider is on life support. If NBC’s treatment of Journeyman and Bionic Woman is any indication, there won’t be an official announcement on Knight Rider from NBC. It just won’t come back to the schedule and finally some exec will begrudgingly cough up the news after it’s already been widely reported for months.

Sci-Fi Faves Top Nielsen DVR List

Nielsen is slowly but surely getting clued in to the significance of DVRs and has released the Top 10 shows that increased in DVR usage in 2008. It probably won’t surprise our readers that several genre shows rank among them.
Variety reports that Heroes picks up an additional 1.83 million viewers off DVR recordings, Lost gains 1.79 million, and Fringe adds 1.60 million. A second list ranked shows by the percentage of viewership increase from DVR. SCI FI Channel did very well in those ratings as Battlestar Galactica topped that list with a 53 percent increase. New show Sanctuary sees a 35 percent increase in its ratings with DVR factored in, while SCI FI Channel mainstay Eureka gains 34 percent.
Now the next step is getting network bigwigs to take notice of these numbers before dropping the axe on shows.

Flickdirect tells us about the fourth season of ABC’s hit Lost on DVD. This is a show that pretty much requires repeated viewing to even begin to understand what’s going on. So a DVD set is a perfect way to get caught up.
Special features includes behind the scenes footage and a compilation of bloopers as well as deleted scenes. One of the unique features puts all of the season’s “flash forwards” together in chronological order. A lot of the features here have been available online for a while, but it’s neat to get them all together in one place. The show is back January 21, so this is a great way to get prepared.
In big movie releases, The Mummy:Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is out this week as well. Extras include “Preparing for Battle with Brendan Fraser and Jet Li,” a look at the fight choreography between the film’s hero and its Dragon Emperor villain. “Jet Li: Creating the Emperor Mummy” looks at the process that turned the famed martial arts star into a CGI creation. The third Mummy installment played to lukewarm reviews. But if you’re shopping for Mummy DVDs, the reviews are likely not that important to you.
ABC Ready to Flash Forward

The Hollywood Reporter brings the scoop about Flash Forward, an adaptation of a Robert J. Sawyer novel about what happens when the entire world passes out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. They awake with horrifying visions of the future.
According to the Reporter, ABC wants to make Flash Forward a companion show for its hit Lost. Joseph Fiennes is apparently ABC’s choice for the lead, a detective trying to put his life back together while trying to prevent the impending catastrophe. The network is also planning to bring aboard John Cho, who will play Hikaru Sulu in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek revamp. Cho may be most famous for his role as Harold Lee in the two Harold and Kumar comedies.
Sounds like this could be a perfect companion piece for Lost. ABC’s been trying to find such a show since Lost became one of the network’s most watched shows. They’ve looked for shows with sci-fi and fantastic elements with previous casualties including Invasion and the recently axed Eli Stone. Next up is a pairing with British sci-fi redo Life on Mars beginning in January.
Life on Mars Tonight: Tuesday’s Dead

Tonight, Detective Sam Tyler has to deal with a strange hostage situation that may be connected to his own - strange situation. Also, he gets a phone call from what sounds like his mother in 2008 begging him to wake up.
Life on Mars will soon be leaving its Thursday night digs to be paired with the returning Lost on Wednesday nights. ABC is hoping the two sci-fi shows will play well together, not unlike FOX’s decision to pair up Dollhouse and Terminator on Fridays.
