This one is more than a little late, folks. I was down sick last weekend and am still digging my way out. And before the haters suggest it, I am not sick of Lois. Sadly, this is the last bit of Smallville action we’ll see until January 15.

Smallville Episode 8.10 “Bride”

Air Date: November 20, 2008.

This one is more than a little late, folks. I was down sick last weekend and am still digging my way out. And before the haters suggest it, I am not sick of Lois. Sadly, this is the last bit of Smallville action we’ll see until January 15.

Things begin with Lois and Clark filming a video congrats to Jimmy and Chloe. Clark is, of course, thoughtful and sincere. Lois makes one of her dad’s off color jokes about marriage and immediately wants that edited out. Next we cut to the wedding and after the loving couple exchange vows, there’s a loud crash and much chaos. The next thing we see is Chloe leaning over a very badly injured Jimmy asking him not to leave her. Something comes toward Chloe and she screams. Time for a flashback of the last eight hours.

Lois is in charge of the proceedings and is power tripping as usual. She talks to Jimmy about wedding day jitters and he says there are none when you know you’re marrying the right person. I disagree. My wife is perfect and I almost fainted about five times during that wedding. But I digress. Jimmy tries to suggest the inevitable Lois and Clark pairing but she insists that’s a bad idea.

She gets a little sentimental holding Clark’s suit and the camera guy gets the whole thing on tape. She wants that edited out too. At this rate, Lois won’t even appear in the video. And some of our fans will be just hunky dory with that.

Jimmy goes and sees Chloe on the wedding day. He realizes that’s bad luck. Dude, you seriously have no idea. She tells him they’ve weathered federal arrests, amnesia and killer kisses from alien princesses. They’ll weather this. I always wonder why anyone lives in Smallville/Metropolis. But if any of these folks left, they’d just move to Gotham City I imagine.

Jimmy leaves and Chloe gets a call from Davis. She ignores it. Oliver shows up and wedding be damned, he wants to go find Lex. There’s some convoluted plan about a wireless “ghost router” that won’t work without Clark. Ollie thinks Clark is just using the wedding as an excuse to not get Lex. He reminds Clark how important Chloe is and Clark explains that Jor-El mindwiped Chloe’s memories of anything Kryptonian. Clark, don’t you read DC Comics? Mindwipes never work out.

Clark does go and get the router but won’t give it to Ollie until after the wedding. He’s afraid Ollie will kill Lex if he finds him. But one of Ollie’s underlings downloads the material needed during Clark and Ollie’s spat. Oh, you crazy Smallville kids!

Lois talks to Chloe and there’s another call from Davis. Chloe mentions the whole “you’re marrying the wrong man” exchange. Chloe needs something borrowed and goes through Clark’s stuff and finds a piece of Kryptonite. Dude, how about putting that somewhere not just anybody can find it in two seconds? They got the naive part of Clark Kent right for sure. He talks her into wearing a flower from an old school dance, not nearly as lethal. That mindwipe is already paying big dividends there, C.K.

We cut to a warehouse where supposedly Lex is doing his evil thing. Ollie arrows Lex in the head and it turns out to be a mannequin with a note “Sorry I Missed You.” Before Ollie can curse Lex’s name, he gets kicked in the head by – Lana? So she’s a ninja now? OK. After they argue about secrets and such, Ollie talks Lana into going to the wedding. Yeah Ollie, you didn’t want to go to this wedding either before Lex outsmarted you.

At the Kent house, the Boy Who Would Be Superman is befuddled by – cuff links. Wait till Lex finds this out, he’ll cook up some Kryptonite cuff links that Clark won’t be able to escape! Now we get the most random piece of sexual innuendo in TV history as Lois explains the secret of cuff links: “It has to stick up straight so you can slide it right in.” Man, I need to find a pair of cuff links. I don’t remember them being quite so – sexy.

More awkwardness as Clark starts saying sweet nothings and Lois turns around to respond. But he was only reading Jimmy’s wedding vows aloud. Oops. And those calls from Davis? So not romantic. He’s gone killing again and is covered in blood. He’s dumping the evidence but a cop shows up. Davis warns the officer to get away but it’s too late – the bone protrusions come out and it’s killin’ time again.

Chloe and Jimmy do at least get married before all hell breaks loose. Chloe and Clark have a dance and she says recently she feels like a weight was lifted from her shoulders. Clark and Lois have a dance and almost kiss – but Lana’s surprise entrance ruins that. Lois starts downing champagne. Um Lois, didn’t you ruin the engagement party by getting drunk? Just saying. She and Ollie talk about her problems and he’s known she was crushing on Clark for a while now apparently.

Lana gets a cell phone message that asks if “the archer” believes her. Clark comes up to her and they have awkward conversation about her leaving. She’s read about the mysterious savior of Metropolis and she’s proud of Clark. Doomsday crashes the party before Lana and Clark can work through their issues. Clark tries to punch him and gets thrown upstairs, right next to the block of Kryptonite. That’s why that stuff shouldn’t just be laying around, Clark. Lana gets rid of it but Doomsday makes off with Chloe.

Oh, and Jimmy tried for a save, which didn’t go very well. He’ll be flown to Star City where one of the best internal surgeons is. Doomsday takes Chloe back to the Fortress of Solitude where she has Brainiac eyes. Also, we see a bald head with wires plugged into it. Could this be Lex? We’ll have to wait until January to find out.

Jimmy and Chloe are talking wedding party and Jimmy mentions that Lana’s coming. Chloe, undergoing a battle with Brainiac, has forgotten who Lana is. She blows it off but Jimmy is sure something is wrong. She flashes back to their engagement party and her memories are glitching up. When Chloe snaps out of it, she doesn’t remember who Jimmy is and freaks out.

Jimmy goes to Clark for help, concerned Chloe’s meteor healing ability might be causing this. Chloe goes to the hospital to research memory loss. She runs into Davis and apologizes for not helping him find his past yet. After his weird experience with his mom, he doesn’t want to know anymore about his past. Davis knows something’s up when he mentions Jimmy and she doesn’t seem to recognize the name.

Clark goes to see Chloe and finds she has a “crib sheet” of the people she’s supposed to remember. They both realize Brainiac is taking her over. Davis and Jimmy talk as Davis says he can’t make it to the wedding. Davis asks if Jimmy really loves her and he gushes, even quoting Frank Sinatra. Jimmy asks Davis if he knows what that kind of love is like and he said that he does. Boy, does he.

Chloe tries to stop Clark from using the infamous crystal to summon Jor-El and rebuild the Fortress but he won’t have any of that. He says everyone that knows his secret goes away and he won’t let that happen to her. While they talk, she has another blackout but Clark stops it. However, Chloe doesn’t remember Clark’s super powers or anything else about Krypton.

Clark goes to rebuild the Fortress of Solitude and get Jor-El’s help, leaving Chloe with a picture of the two of them together to help her remember. Jimmy tries to get Chloe to go see a doctor but she wants to stay there until Clark gets back. Jimmy wins out and while undergoing the MRI, Chloe flashes back to the first time she met Clark. This is a cute scene where talks about how boring she expects Smallville to be. She mentions that she lost her favorite book in the move. Clark super speeds to the library and brings her the book. Ah, super crush beginning her. Things start going crazy again. After massive Clark memory delete, all she remembers is Davis. She runs to find him and he promises to help her.

Davis brings Chloe back to Jimmy and Clark, then sedates her before she can run off again. Clark takes her to the Fortress. He asks Jor-El to leave her without any memories of Krypton or Clark’s powers. Something drips out of her ear and into the ground. Looks like it’s time for Brainiac to infect the Fortress.

Jor-El does what he says. Chloe is happy and blissfully unaware of anything Kryptonian. As she steps out, Davis reveals his feelings for Chloe and tells her she’s marrying the wrong man. And there’s a kiss. Clark goes to talk to Jor-El about the Kryptonian symbol for doom. He describes the ultimate destroyer and that the being has apparently made its way to Earth. Clark vows to defeat it. After Clark leaves the Fortress, Brainiac reveals himself and takes over the Fortress, proclaiming that Doomsday has arrived and it’s time for the House of El to fall.

Lois decides to move in with Clark at the Kent Farm. People, stay as far away from Clark Kent as you can. Really. Case in point: Somebody sends him a mysterious blue crystal that transports him and Lois to the Phantom Zone. This is the same crystal Tess has been busy searching for. Chloe finds the crystal, then Tess shows up and wants the crystal despite Chloe’s efforts to convince her it isn’t there.

Chloe calls Ollie for help but Davis shows up trying to find answers about his life. Lois and Clark run into Kara, who has been in the Phantom Zone all this time. Jor-El gave her a portal but she hasn’t opened it because she didn’t want any Zoners escaping like when Clark got out. Chloe finds Ollie and wants him to steal a piece of equipment from Tess that will help hack the alien crystal. He gets it, but not before Tess catches him in the act. As Green Arrow, Ollie shoots her with a temporarily paralyzing arrow and “lets himself out.”

Kara and Clark agree to send Lois home but something follows her back and takes possession of her body. Turns out it’s Faora, wife of General Zod. She’s looking for her son and tells Tess as much. Tess offers to help but Faora knows she’s lying and blows past Tess at superspeed. Faora read several of Chloe’s articles while at the Daily Planet and goes to her for info. After getting put in a Kryptonian death grip, Chloe drops the file with Davis’ picture.

Faora finds Davis and tells him “Mother’s Here,” as he does a great confused look. Chloe hacks the crystal and Ollie wants to know how. She tells him she doesn’t tell him how to shoot arrows. Chloe goes super scary and when Ollie tries to disconnect her from the crystal she tosses him across the room. A portal opens and Clark convinces Kara to come with him. After they get back to Metropolis Chloe explains the situation. Clark tells Kara to find the Martian Manhunter (in his guise as Metropolis PD Detective John Jones) and ask for his crystal.

Meanwhile, Faora explains Davis’ heritage to him and tells him he’s meant to rule this world. But right now he’s too weak. So she promptly runs him through with a metal pipe. That which kills him makes him stronger, she says. Then Faora taunts Clark, saying his parents didn’t love him the way she loves her son. She then knocks him through the wall but before she can finish him, Kara shows up with the crystal that takes Faora back to the Phantom Zone.

Lois thinks she hallucinated the whole thing and Tess gave her a raise. Funny. Lois will be using that raise to get her own place, so she’s not moving in with Clark after all. Good, because Ma Kent wouldn’t approve of them shacking up anyway. Tess talks to Clark about the Kryptonian spaceship Lois discussed the day before. Tess shows him a footprint of his she found at the Kent Farm, which matches one at the Arctic Circle. She tells him they are on the same side and that he should trust her. Whatever.

Speaking of trust, Kara tells Clark that he should tell Lois his secret. Kara believes Miss Lane is tough enough to handle that. She says that on some level Clark believes the same thing or he wouldn’t have let her get so close. Clark wants Kara to stay, but she heard rumors in the Zone that the Kryptonian city of Kandor survived. She’s going to find it, but Clark’s destiny is to protect and inspire humans so he must stay behind.

Clark has more trouble as Ollie wants to know what Superguy is doing about Chloe’s Brainiac infection. He’s working on it, Ollie. But Clark’s biggest problem goes by the name of Davis Bloome. He wakes up, seemingly unsure if he dreamed his whole encounter with his mother. He runs himself through with the metal pipe, getting the Clark Kent bullet time effect that apparently means his powers are fully active now. Ruh-roh, Raggy.

Clark and Chloe discuss the situation and she thinks it would be a good thing for the world to have a hero that inspires hope. She suggests he adopt an alias like Green Arrow has. Clark ain’t having that and tries to talk Tess out of running the story. Gee, Clark, why don’t you just tattoo “It’s Me” on your forehead? Tess questions why a reporter whose biggest byline so far has been kitten adoption wouldn’t want his name on this story. Oh, and The Daily Planet will be running this on the front page.

Clark stops by Lois’ place and cautions her about dating strange men. Sebastian shows up and and she ushers Clark out before Sebastian can read his mind.

Jimmy wants Clark to go through the Smallville High yearbook and see if anybody rings any bells for Clark. After comparing his photo of the red and blue blur to a photo of Clark with a red and blue outfit on, Jimmy figures out it’s Clark. Wow, we still don’t know how long it’s going to take Lois to figure this out. Clark goes to Chloe and tells her, trying to get her to convince Jimmy he’s on the wrong track. Jimmy arrives and realizes Clark “blurred” there, reinforcing the Clark has superpowers theory.

Clark talks to Ollie, who’s busy drinking with some lovely ladies. Clark lays a major guilt trip on Ollie for giving up the Arrow but somehow talks him into helping conceal Clark’s identity.

Yeah, the plan here is for Ollie to pose as Clark, “save” Clark from Chloe attempting to hit him with a car and throw Jimmy off the case. Ollie has a red and blue suit and will “fly” by with a trick arrow. Hey, I didn’t say it was a good plan.

Sebas puts the charms on Lois and when he touches her hand realizes that she knows he was a prisoner at Black Creek. Also, she has a flash drive with more info about the facility. He tells Mercy who is less than sympathetic, as she can’t be connected to Black Creek in any way. Sebas suggests Lois will not make it into work tomorrow and then Mercy tells her driver to move on to Jimmy Olsen.

And yes, the “plan” hits a glitch as Lois calls Clark for help while Sebas is trying to kill her. He ducks on the plan to take the phone call and goes to save her, touching Sebas’ hand in the process. Meanwhile, Jimmy gets into real danger from a mugger and Ollie makes the save. He sticks around long enough to get photographed in the red and blue costume. Jimmy somehow falls for this even though before, the hero has been moving at super speed.

But Lois is on the case now and will not stop until she gets the first exclusive interview with the mystery guy. Clark and Ollie talk. Ollie realizes that the Green Arrow is who he is, so he’s back in the tights. He suggests Clark try the red and blue outfit to which Clark responds, “Not in this lifetime.”

Now our girl Chloe visits Sebas at the hospital and wants to know if he touched Clark’s hand. He tells her did, so now yet another person knows Clark’s secret. She explains that the brain is like a computer and if you download too much information, it crashes. She dumps her Brainiac knowledge into him and he dies. As Borat might say, “WHAAAT?” Psycho Brainiac Chloe – OK.

Clark ignores Chloe as he listens to the police scanner. Hey, it’s lonely work being Superman. He goes and busts up some crimes at superspeed and there’s a cute scene where a little kid thinks he knocked out two bullies with a wild barrage. Clark hears a distress call at the Ace of Clubs, where he finds Davis covered in blood surrounded by victims. Davis doesn’t remember coming into the club. The Martian Manhunter shows up and tells Clark he’s now Det. John Jones. “John” figures that’s the best way to help people without his powers. Clark promises that he’ll help get those powers back. Neither of them have any leads, but Clark suspects Davis knows more than he’s letting on.

When Clark returns to the Daily Planet, Jimmy’s mentions he’s been taking photos of “Citizen X.” Clark tries to steer him away and says that if this hero exists, he dropped the ball last night. He and Clark check out video from club. The killer is so fast they can’t see anything. Clark wants Chloe’s help, but she isn’t interested in throwing one of her Isis Foundation kids under the bus. Davis takes a very creepy shower to wash away the blood.

Jimmy talks to Davis and mentions he heard the monster has bony eyelids. He asks to ride along with Davis on ambulance. Davis reluctantly agrees as a favor for Chloe. Clark’s being hard on himself and the Manhunter tells him not to become obsessed. Manhunter explains that Davis is always first to arrive at crime scenes. Speaking of Davis, he investigates corpse and runs into Chloe. He confides in her that he may be the killer. She refuses to believe him and promises to find the real killer.

She asks why he’s telling her and he says that she already knows. Well, “I May Be a Meteor Freak Serial Killer” was the not the pickup line I’d have used on Chloe, but it’s different. Chloe talks to her kids who tell her that someone tipped off the police. Clark confronts Davis about keeping photos of the murder victims. Davis tells Clark he could have only gotten those by breaking into his locker. Why is Clark acting like Batman again? Davis mentions that Clark appears in all the photos and got there before any press would have been notified.

Chloe tells Clark the skin under the victim’s nails is Davis Bloome’s. And Jimmy’s going on ride along with him. Davis gets an ambulance call and tells Jimmy to stay back. Chloe tracks down Davis’ ambulance and hears a distress call from Jimmy. Some shadow creature attacks Davis and then Jimmy. Clark clocks him with a tire and it’s one of Chloe’s kids. Clark and Chloe make up. Then she sees Davis, who asks if she has feelings for him. She doesn’t answer. Hey, the I May Be a Serial Killer line worked!

Jones comes back to the Planet and tells Clark he’s got to be more careful about not getting caught. Just then, Jimmy shows up and asks Jones about “Mystery Hero” then vows to prove he exists. A rep from LuthorCorp talks to the “Shadow Killer” and tells him she knows he’s a copycat. She has security camera footage proving he was in an arcade during one of the murders. Before she’ll believe he’s the killer, he has to tell her where one of the victim’s crucifix is. He can’t, because – duh duh duh: Davis has it! It’s like Doomsday is here!

Smallville Episode 8.05 Committed

Air Date: Oct. 16, 2008

Jimmy and Chloe’s engagement party spirals to an embarrassing conclusion when Lois gets drunk and voices her concerns about the couple. Things only get worse for Jimmy and Chloe as after the party, this episode’s psychotic villain with an ample supply of Kryptonite gets a hold of them.

He quizzes couples on their commitment and if they fail, he kills them. Cheery sort of fellow. His lady love cheated on him and needless to say, he didn’t take it too well. The villain asks Jimmy if he’s ever cheated on Chloe and who knew, but getting toxic kisses from alien princesses does count as cheating. Chloe shakes the Smallville fan base to its core by saying she’s not in love with anyone but Jimmy and passing the test.

Image © 2008 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved

Just to throw this out there – Chloe can talk to machines, so it’s conceivable she could easily pass a lie detector test whether she’s lying or not. Smallville fan fiction pens, away! But the guy lets them go, since they passed. That was – anticlimactic.

But wait, Lois and Clark have gone looking for Jimmy and Chloe. Lois woke up at the farm after her drunken tirade. No, nothing happened – he’s a Big Blue Boy Scout, after all. They decide to pose as a couple and after doing some investigating come across our insane jewelry salesman. His Kryptonite bracelet makes it possible to get Lois and Clark into the machine. Lois admits she loves Clark, sending millions of readers to the message boards with “I Hate Lois” venom running through their blood.

Clark, however, is able to escape the machine before he has to answer the question. Aw, boo! In other romantic entanglements, Tess and Oliver go on a date that ends up being a sparring match. After sparring in the gym, they – um, spar in between the sheets. Ollie think it’s all good but Tess reminds him he cheated on her with a hostess.

She claims this whole encounter was just her scratching an itch. Is that what they call it these days? And what happened to that whole “turning over a new leaf” after leaving the island? Ah, I guess that just applies to crimefighting. Green Arrow is a womanizer in the comic books too, so this scenario fits perfectly.

Oh, and Jimmy reveals his “horrible secret” to Chloe. He never knew his mother and his dad’s an alcoholic. That’s your secret, Jimmy? Your betrothed is possessed by a hostile alien intelligence. That’s what we call a secret in Smallville, Jimmy.

At the Daily Planet, Lois gives Clark some dating advice telling he needs less “damsel in distress” and more “wild cherry.” Gee, wonder who she could be referring to? Lois also quickly jumps on the Maxima story, telling Clark’s he not ready. Hey! An actual Jimmy sighting, I almost forgot he was on the show this season. He and Chloe engage in playful banter and he accidentally knocks down a book with a gushing love letter that Chloe wrote Clark when they were in high school. Jimmy is understandably ticked and wants to know why Chloe never wrote him a letter like this.

Ollie tries to rekindle with Tess by sending her a nice dress and a note to meet him at the Ace of Clubs. She tells her assistant to politely decline. Maxima shows up and wants to know why she can find nothing but human men on this planet. Um, I’ll take humans are the native race for $1,000? Maxima finds the dress and the note and thinks Tess is trying to keep the Kryptonian man for herself. Maxima slams Tess into a wall and gets ready for her date.

Lois and Clark are investigating the case and there’s a string of corpses with high endorphin levels between Smallville and Metropolis. Maxima gets to the Ace of Clubs and thinks Jimmy is the man she’s been looking for. Clark talks to Chloe, who thanks to her Brainiac download knows way too much about this stuff. Clark is scared for her and Chloe tells Clark that he can’t “wave his Kryptonian wand” and fix this one. Reluctantly, Clark goes to resume the hunt for Maxima.

Poor Jimmy takes the killer kiss and begins cardiac arrest. Clark comes running in to save him and Maxima sees Clark in action. There’s the man she was looking for. Tess wants to hire Chloe to hack a supercomputer. Chloe reminds Tess that Lex had her locked up for doing that, so she’s uninterested. Jimmy’s OK, since Clark got him to the hospital in time. He tells Clark about the letter Chloe wrote him. Clark explains that he’s not a threat and Jimmy should be glad to have Chloe. Finally, Clark and Maxima encounter each other and he can’t resist her feminine wiles either.

Lois catches them Clark and Maxima in the elevator and Miss Lane ain’t happy. She snaps at them and Clark follows after her. While Lois is in her car talking about what a slut Maxima is, Maxima shows up and tells Lois that Clark is very attracted to her, else he couldn’t have resisted Maxima’s powers. She also throws Lois’ car like a top – jealous much? Clark runs into Tess, who recognizes Maxima from their earlier encounter. She pulls out Kryptonian crystal and gets a phone call about Maxima’s rampage. Clark listens in and realizes Lois is in danger.

Maxima makes convincing arguments and it looks like Clark is thinking about it, but the Big Blue Scout gives her the Super Brushoff. Maxima leaves Earth – for now. Chloe talks to Clark and tells him he blew his chance, she’s in love with Jimmy now. She does ask Clark to give her away at the wedding. As a wedding present, Clark said if he can get his hands on the computer in the crystal Jor-El could heal Chloe.

Chloe realizes that must be the supercomputer Tess needed hacked and goes to talk to her about it. Tess says computer is gone and that someone stole it. Tess later gets an e-mail asking if she’s looking for the crystal and telling her she’s not ready to know what’s inside it.

Lois and Clark talk about their latest weird experience. Clark tells Lois about all Maxima’s “soulmate” business then asks what Maxima said to her. Lois plays it off as if it were nothing important. Clark offers Lois her old room at the farm but she turns him down, saying their being roommates didn’t work last time.

Things start at a very swanky Metropolis charity get together. Chloe remarks on how much time Lois and Clark are spending together. Those crazy kids, everyone can see the attraction but them. Ollie passes out, saying he’s been poisoned and only has 12 hours to live. He’s emphatic that his friends must not take him to a hospital. Clark isn’t happy about it but goes with his friend’s wishes. The girl that was with Ollie got poisoned too, so Clark starts following those bread crumbs.

At the Daily Planet, Tess Mercer quips that she can’t believe she hasn’t fired Lois Lane. Lois reminds us that she’s the best reporter on the staff. Tess mentions Ollie falling down drunk at a party and isn’t sure Lois can be objective about the story. She’s Lois Lane – does anyone think she’s not getting the story? Lois and Clark are the only two writers on the Daily Planet staff, aren’t they?

We flashback to Ollie stranded on a deserted island trying to find food. He figures out he’s not fast enough to catch a wild pig. Queen takes up archery and we see the genesis of a hero! Ollie comes across some other people on the island but can tell they’re up to no good. He accidentally gets pricked by an exotic plant and passes out.

Image © 2008 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved

When Ollie wakes up, Tess is standing over him and heals him with leeches. Um, eww? She tells him a hospital would have pumped him full of adrenaline which would kill him instantly. Tess says she and her friend have been kidnapped and are being held hostage. The kidnappers killed most of the people on Tess’ boat.

Making matters worse, the crooks know exactly who Oliver Queen is and plan to ransom him. That makes the two girls useless by comparison and the group’s leader kills one immediately. He’s about to do the same to Tess but Ollie, the “golden goose,” throws himself in front of Tess. He correctly gambles the criminals won’t kill their new meal ticket.

Back in real time Clark goes to the hospital and sees that Adriana, the girl Ollie was with is now fine. Davis said that’s proof that Ollie was too sick to know what he was talking about and goes to get him. But they gave the poor girl adrenaline so she flatlines.

Chloe has traced the plant that hurt Ollie using her new computer powers. Clark wants to know what’s up with her. When he see Chloe surfing the web at superhuman speed, he realizes this has something to do with her Brainiac encounter. They’ll talk again, but Chloe has found that LuthorCorp has the plant that can save Ollie.

Clark talks to Tess and she seems unconcerned until she finds out the friend is Ollie. But she tells Clark the lab working with that plant has been relocated to Brazil. Even if she makes the call, it would never get there in time. She has no idea who she’s talking to though. Davis is back at Ollie’s bedside and tells Lois all he can do is keep Ollie alive for a few minutes. Lois tells him to do it.

Back to Flashback Island as Tess mourns her dead friend. Ollie makes a weapon out of a trinket her friend wears. He incapacitates the lead kidnapper with a throw Brett Favre would envy. They leave him on the island to die. Hey, Ollie’s new to this hero thing.

In real time Clark, of course, shows up with the cure in the nick of time. Ollie says whoever did this will go after Tess too. It’s our boy from the island and the new, evil Tess beats him pretty bad but the crook gets the upper hand. Clark heat visions down a piece of the Daily Planet’s building rigging to knock the bad guy out and leaves at superspeed. Tess, or “Mercy,” as Ollie calls her looks around as if she knows something strange just happened.

Tess and Ollie have an argument and it’s clear they didn’t part on good terms. She does give him a folder that he says proves Lionel Luthor killed his parents.

Clark asks Lois about her feelings for Ollie and she says she could never date a man with a “hero complex.” She jokes that Ollie is an icon, the “Man of Tomorrow.” Davis talks to Chloe about her brilliance and he asks how her fiance feels about it. Then he realizes Jimmy doesn’t know. Davis tells her that we all some part even under the surface that we hide. No joke, Mr. Transform Into a Monster in Alleyways Guy. Ollie tells Clark what he found out about Lionel and Clark knew what Lionel did but never told Ollie. Ollie said he would have controlled his emotions and not killed Lionel.

Ollie tells Clark that in spite of all his powers, he’s scared of everything. He tells Clark that his island is still out there. And our kidnapper is on his way out of town in a cab then he gets pricked. Yeah, you know it’s Mercy. She poisons him and makes sure the cab driver takes him to the hospital. Nice work, Mercy. Lex left the company in truly evil hands.

No sooner than Lois comments on it being a slow news day, there’s an explosion right outside the office. A bus blew up and all Smallville’s major players this season are involved.

Chloe is on hand to help people escape the wreckage, new LuthorCorp CEO Tess Mercer is on board the bus and gets saved by Clark. How nobody saw him tear through the bus like tissue paper is beyond me. When’s that costume coming? Only in comic book land is skintight spandex plastered with garish colors a disguise. Responding to the danger is <strike>Crashdown,</strike> I mean paramedic Davis Bloome who will become Doomsday.

Image: © 2008 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved

Also on board is Bette, a homeless girl on the run who is definitely avoiding somebody. Chloe and Davis try to talk her into going to a shelter for girls and she’s not interested. Tess calls Clark into her office under the guise of thanking him for saving her life. She wants to pick his brain about Lex. Clark of course lies and says he doesn’t know anything. Tess decides she’s going to follow him from now on.

Lois strikes out trying to get info at the crime scene but Clark doesn’t. He decides to track down Bette, who steers him toward a “meteor freak” she knows. But Bette blows the poor kid to smithereens and makes it look like spontaneous combustion.

Meanwhile, Davis talks to Chloe and he’s laying on the smoothness until she tells him about her engagement to Jimmy. He’s actually the first person she’s told. Lois breaks into some files at the hospital and gets the dead kid’s autopsy report. While Clark stalls for her, Davis runs into Clark. Davis mistakenly congratulates Clark. Davis thought Clark and Chloe looked like a couple and assumed they were. Sorry Davis, only in Smallville fan fiction. The autopsy doesn’t show any trace of meteor powers and that the explosion came from someplace/someone else. Clark realizes that Bette was present for both explosions and that Chloe’s in danger.

And boy is she ever. Bette tries to run, Chloe tries to talk her out of it. Bette loses her temper and blows up a knicknack, tipping Chloe to who the real meteor freak was. Once Chloe realizes what happened, Bette explains she came from the prison that Chloe was trapped in last week. Bette will do anything to keep from going back, including killing Chloe. Clark saves the day just in the nick of time. He and Chloe have a heart-to-heart about her engagement and it’s a little awkward. She tells Clark that after the marriage their friendship will change. She’s not sure she’s ready and wants to know if he is.

Bette gets an offer she can’t refuse from Tess, who tells her she shut down the facility. If by shut down you mean “trashed by the Justice League,” then yeah she did. Great sci-fi reference when Bette refers to the prison as “The Thunderdome.”

And finally we end the ep with a glimpse of what you all really came for:Doomsday. Davis looks like Bruce Banner after a bad night as he shakes in an alley during his transformation. I’m not sure if he was changing to or changing back from being Doomsday, but we’ll find out. Some scary head ridges there so his transformed state may look like the comic book character.

At what’s left of the Fortress of Solitude, new LuthorCorp CEO Tess Mercer oversees the search for Lex Luthor and whatever he was looking for. The Justice League crashes the party and busts some heads, finding Clark’s clothes but not him.

At Lex’s house, Lois Lane is in a French maid outfit. Does anybody wear those anymore, even French maids? Not that I’m complaining. Tess promptly has Lois removed from the premises.

Chloe is being held captive and forced to display her newly found mental powers. The guy testing her tells her she has two choices: federal prison or helping her country. She’ll take helping her country for $1000, Alex!

Clark is in some Russian work camp, completely powerless. He steals a truck and tries to make a break for it. Let’s face it, Grand Theft Auto is just not Clark’s style and the attempt fails. Chloe is being asked to solve an algorithm that will give her captors three cell nos. She figures out that she’s tracking down the JL and stops, but with her help they’ve already captured Aquaman and Black Canary.

Arrow finds Clark in the work camp, and there’s a cute Easter egg here. Oliver uses the alias Roy Connor, two names immediately familiar to Green Arrow fans. Those are the first names of his proteges, Roy Harper and Connor Hawke. Connor is actually Oliver Queen’s son in the comic books and fills in as Green Arrow while Ollie’s dead. Like most comic book characters, he got over it. Ollie and Clark stage a fight to bust him out of the camp.

There’s one LuthorCorp facility the JL hasn’t hit yet, so they figure Chloe must be there. Ollie doesn’t want Clark to go, calling him “useless” without his powers. Ouch. Inside the complex they split and Clark runs into Lois, who basically warns him not to be useless. This has to be getting on his nerves.

Chloe’s captors have a serum made from her mother’s spinal fluid (Ewww) that can temporarily mind control people. They use it on her to track down Ollie inside the building and then use it on him, telling him to do whatever’s necessary to find Lex. Apparently what’s necessary is putting two arrows in Clark’s chest. Chloe isn’t able to heal him, but the Martian Manhunter shows up and flies Clark toward the sun to restore his powers. Unfortunately it has the opposite effect on the Manhunter so no more saves from him.

Clark discusses the possibility of a secret ID before he and the JL part ways. They all agree to lay low for a while. Chloe and Jimmy Olsen try to pick up where they left off and the wedding is back on. And Tess Mercer receives a package with a strange blue stone in it. Some form of Kryptonite, maybe? And last but not least, Clark starts his new job at the Daily Planet, right next to Lois.
