In Stilletto, Lois will apparently get in touch with her super heroic side as a hero named, well, Stilletto. Yes, that’s right in this show’s continuity Lois Lane gets a superhero identity before Clark Kent does. That’s funny. Longtime Super-Romance fans will remember ABC’s Lois and Clark endowed Teri Hatcher’s Lois Lane with superpowers as Ultrawoman.

While something about Lois getting a super name and costume before Clark sounds oh-so-wrong to my inner fanboy, something about Erica Durance in spandex sounds oh-so-right.

I would expect Lois’ powers to be short-lived and played for full comedic effect, but then I didn’t expect Lana Lang to get superpowers either. Smallville’s brain trust has never been bound by anything that has happened in the comic books. They’ve proven that by having Doomsday face Clark before he becomes Superman, introducing multiple new characters such as Chloe and generally taking this show in its own direction.

Whether you’re a fan or not, Smallville is poised to enter its ninth season. That’s an eternity in sci-fi, so this show has to be characterized as a success. It is arguably the most successful translation of comic book to TV material in history and shows no signs of slowing up.

Bombshell Serinda Swan has landed the role of DC Comics’ sorceress Zatanna in CW’s hit Smallville, according to TV Guide’s Matt Mitovich. You may have seen Swan in a small role as a hospital receptionist in Supernatural, or a July 2008 episode of USA’s Psych.

In the eighth season’s 17th episode, Hex, Zatanna grants a frustrated Chloe a wish. After all the chaos in her life, Chloe wishes she could live the relatively carefree life of her cousin Lois Lane. I’m not sure what Lois Lane Chloe’s been watching. They’ve both been possessed by Superman villains this season already. But whatever gets Chloe through the day, I guess.

Zatanna Zatara is one of the most powerful magic users in the DC Universe and though she’s a C-level character, the company’s been giving her quite a push lately. Zatanna has appeared in the Justice League Unlimited animated show, the Justice League Heroes video game and was one of the focal characters of the critically acclaimed Identity Crisis comic mini-series. And now she’s hitting Smallville.

As you can see, Serinda is very easy on the eyes. Two words come to my mind: Lois Who?

Oh, and by the way a lovely lady named Lana shows up for the wedding. Looks like Clark’s going to catch an emotional beatdown before he catches a physical one.

This is shaping up to be the cannot miss event of the Smallville season. Who brought the rice to throw and tin cans to tie on the back of the car? Or since this is Smallville we’re talking about, who brought the Kryptonite?

It’s the night you’ve been waiting for Smallville fans, the premiere of cameo-loaded Season Eight. We’ll begin with the Justice League searching for Clark. Later in the season we’ll meet Maxima, Doomsday and the Legion of Superheroes.

With Lana out of the picture, the feelings between Lois Lane and Clark Kent can finally begin to develop. Of course, Lois has been busy sorting out her feelings for Green Arrow so surely it’s not going to be smooth romantic sailing initially.

Is Clark powerless here or is that a Kryptonite arrow? Are you guys fighting over Lois? If so, I can’t say that I blame you there.

Well, in addition to being a dashing and handsome superhero Oliver Queen is filthy rich. Don’t know what’s going on here, but it’s safe to say he’s not throwing down a couple hundred on the Metropolis Meteors.

Those of you that think Smallville is out of ideas will be interested to know CW execs kicked around the idea of a spinoff involving Kara’s someday Supergirl character.

Sy Fy Portal said Laura Vandervoort let that slip out at the weekend’s FanExpo 2008 in Toronto. Vandervoort told Smallville fans that Clark’s Kryptonian cousin is slated to appear in one final episode this season. That episode will tie up her storyline. With numerous cast members leaving the eighth season CW standard, the allure of a spinoff to breathe new life into the franchise was no doubt tempting. But alas, it’s apparently a no-go.

It came up on the comment board yesterday, so there’s no sense not talking about the 800 lb. gorilla -  er, shark in the room. A number of Smallville fans are not happy with the show’s current direction.

As we discussed a little while back, everyone from fans to writers are offering up their suggestions for how to fix things. So we went to the source, Jump The Shark to find out what others are thinking. The number one response over there is “Too Much Fawning Over Lana” with 1717 votes. Of course the no. 2 pick is Never Jumped, so a strong eighth season could have that option taking the lead back. And with Kristin Kreuk being gone now, there won’t be fawning over Lana. It looks like full speed ahead for the inevitable Lois-Clark relationship.

Our fellow SF fanatic over at Superhero Profiles brings us a scoop about another supervillain hitting Smallville’s eighth season. Maxima, Empress of Planet Almerac is on her way.

Maxima is an alien with powers comparable to Supe- um, Clark’s. In the comic book, she comes to Earth to seduce our hero because she needs a suitable mate. In DC Comics she vacillates between being a hero and a villain depending which writer is at the helm. In addition to being jilted by Superman, Captain Atom and Amazing Man have spurned her advances.

Only in comic books can a gorgeous woman who is rich, powerful and has superpowers come to Earth repeatedly and not find a guy who wants to go back with her. Comics 2 Film confirms Canadian actress Charlotte Sullivan (MVP) will wear Maxima’s crown.

With Lex Luthor out the door, it looks like Smallville will throw every remaining villain in Superman’s Rogues Gallery at the screen. Maxima joins Doomsday as confirmed villains for this season. What do you think, readers? Will Doomsday and Maxima be enough to make you forget Luthor?

TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello keeps the Smallville scoop coming. He’s now reporting that Battlestar Galactica alum Sam Witwer, better known as Alex “Crashdown” Quartararo is joining the Season Eight cast of Smallville.

Apparently Witwer will play Doomsday, the villain that in the comic books eventually kills the Man of Steel. Don’t worry, he comes back. Since Smallville doesn’t exactly follow the plot of the comic books, it’s not a shocker that Doomsday’s origin is a little different. OK, way different. In the books Doomsday is an alien creature with strength matching Superman’s.

According to the press materials from CW, Doomsday starts out as Davis Bloome, a charismatic paramedic with a dark side. I’ve long since stopped bashing Smallville for not following the book plots, I get that it’s an entirely different take on the Super-mythos.

Besides which, it’s much easier to kick Smallville now because the creators and some of the stars have left. I don’t have a whole lot of hope for the show with Lex Luthor and Lana Lang gone. But if they’re going to “kill” Clark this year, that could certainly provide a ratings spike. I wonder how far they’ll go with it though. In the comics and even on the animated DVD of Supes’ death, things get pretty graphic. Will CW run promo posters with a bloody, beaten Clark Kent? And how will they handle a fight that logically, seems it would attract enough attention to reveal Clark’s ID?
