Duchess Satine Kryze tries to keep the Republic from interfering in Mandalorian affairs after attacks by the Death Watch, the splinter group advocating a return to the old warrior ways. But when Satine herself is attacked and framed, she sets off – against the better judgment of her Jedi protectors – to uncover the full breadth of the conspiracy and the faction’s true origins. No longer content to operate from the fringes, the mysterious Mandalorian Death Watch sets its sights on the “Duchess of Mandalore.”

“Satine is struggling with many fires now, and trying to keep them from merging into one large inferno that can’t be put out,” says Anna Graves, the voice of Satine in The Clone Wars. “She wants peace above all else, and will shout it as loud as she can. Historical pacifists are often met with more hatred and violence, but that seems to push someone like Satine to fight for peace even harder. I think with any culture that idolizes war and violence, some people will naturally rebel against that traditional way of thinking and focus their efforts on peace and tranquility. I’m sure a lot of people agree with her views, but I’m sure there are just as many who don’t. Her neutrality in The Clone Wars is such a beautiful cry for love and peace, which throughout history has upset those who idolize power and control.”

Set against the backdrop of a sweeping conflict which threatens to consume the galaxy, Satine’s struggle is all the more personal, however, as she faces upheaval from within her own constituency. Using violence as their language of dissent, the Death Watch threatens to unravel all of Satine’s efforts, and to undermine the peace she has fought so hard to preserve. But the war itself is a battle of ideologies. Despite their extremism – or perhaps because of it – the radical faction represents a popular opinion among the re-emerging culture.

“I see Mandalore as an old world, full of history and tradition. After years of glimpses into Mandalorian lore, it’s exciting to get new facts and faces,” Graves says. “Every fan has their own reasons for loving Mandalore, but Boba Fett opened the door with his intriguing armor and history as a bounty hunter. I know fans will want to hear more about Death Watch – and those who oppose them. To be a small part of that history is so exciting. Add a little Mandalorian-Jedi romance, and that’s good stuff!”

Nearly wiped out by the Jedi Knights in a long-ago war, deadly Mandalorian warriors emerge from the shadows to exact cold revenge upon their peace-seeking rivals. Cloaked in mystery and hardened by memories of their bitter defeat, they are fueled by a collective desire to reclaim the glory of Mandalore – no matter the cost.

Sent to look into troubling rumors surrounding Duchess Satine of Mandalore, Obi-Wan Kenobi discovers the truth behind the whispers of a mysterious conspiracy. But his investigation uncovers more than he’d originally anticipated, pulling back the shadowy shroud from a long-rumored splinter group and bringing to light a deadly threat to the Republic.

Originally introduced as concept art that ultimately became the basis for bounty hunter Boba Fett, the Mandalorians have been favorites within the Star Wars fan community for years, even though much remains to be discovered about their culture, their history, or their in-universe origins. With only glimpses into the true nature of these mysterious warriors, they have long been the subject of rampant fan speculation and discourse. And now they are making their Clone Wars debut.

“This is how George has always envisioned the Mandalorians,” says Supervising Director Dave Filoni. “Of course, people immediately think of the iconic Fett armor, because that’s all we’ve had to go on for so many years; it’s mysterious, and we’ve built up that mystique as fans. But Boba and Jango Fett aren’t necessarily what I would consider accurate representatives of the Mando culture. They’re bounty hunters and outlaws – totally rogue. If you go way back to the original concepts, the Mandalorians were a group of supercommando troops; it’s only now that George is really bringing that to the screen. They’re in the series because he wanted to define their culture, to explore the foundations of this warrior faction.”

According to Filoni, the introduction of Mandalorians was something that had been discussed as early as the first season of The Clone Wars – although Lucas held off on approving the story arc until the series’ second season, once the larger conflict had been more firmly established.

“This was a running joke among the crew early in the production,” says Filoni. “A lot of people on the crew wanted to see the Mandalorians – especially our head writer, Henry Gilroy – but they were off-limits to us at the time. George definitely has a sense of pace, and of a natural order for Star Wars storytelling; plus, it’s his universe, so we had to set aside our Mando ideas for the time being. Ultimately, though, he came back around and gave us his blueprint for how he wanted to see the Mandalorian culture represented, which is great because they bring so much to the conflict. The first season was pretty straightforward; we had the Republic versus the Separatists. But now we have these splinter groups – like the Mandos, the bounty hunters, and the Geonosians – who each bring something totally different to the table.”

Voicing the leader of the Mandalorian warriors is actor/director Jon Favreau – a long-time Star Wars fan. His involvement in The Clone Wars came as an indirect result of post-production for the first Iron Man film; he was working with Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound when his path crossed with Filoni’s at Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Ranch.

“I had mentioned that I would love to do a voice, and that I’d done voices before – and the idea for me to play a Mandalorian came up. I wasn’t holding out for a cool character, but I think the Mandalorians are probably the ones that the die-hards are going to be the most curious about,” says Favreau. “I grew up a fan of Star Wars. It was the first time I had ever experienced that really iconic, mythic archetypal storytelling. What’s fun about Star Wars is that it still has as much relevance and impact now as it did then. It seems to be a set of characters and a world that is timeless, and every generation seems to embrace. So it’s fun to be able to share with my family and my kids the excitement that I had when I was young.”

When a wily pickpocket steals Ahsoka’s lightsaber during an otherwise routine mission, the desperate Togruta teen must enlist the help of an elderly Jedi Master to track down the slippery thief. The search takes the unlikely pair deep into the seedy underbelly of Coruscant’s seamy underworld…and pits the young Padawan against a new kind of threat, unlike anything she’s seen on the front lines. It’s a race to reclaim both her weapon and her honor in “Lightsaber Lost.”

For Giancarlo Volpe – the episode’s director – “Lightsaber Lost” provided a welcome opportunity to draw back from the high intensity action of the front lines, exploring the characters against a different tonal backdrop altogether. While still boasting one of the series’ most memorable action sequences, the episode also focuses on an unlikely juxtaposition – and the quiet humor that results from Ahsoka’s new friendship.

“Comedy belongs in Star Wars as much as anything,” says Volpe. “Filmmaking actually plays a lot off of contrast – such as the contrast between a wicked villain and a benevolent hero, or between slow, emotional scenes and really fast-paced action. The more you emphasize one side, the more extreme the other becomes. They work hand in hand. I think if Clone Wars always took itself too seriously, it would no longer feel like the movies.”

The very character dynamics of the episode itself are marked by distinct contrast, deliberately pairing the impulsive Ahsoka with Tera Sinube – a wizened old Jedi Master. Modeled after a seasoned, elderly samurai who improves – and mellows – with age, Sinube teaches patience, temperance and deliberation to the impetuous Padawan.

“He’s definitely a caricature of his own philosophy. He keeps telling Ahsoka she’s too frantic and moving too fast. She needs to slow down and really listen to her intuition, and trust her feelings. We played that up in everything from the way he moves to the way he talks,” says Volpe. “To me, it’s very much like Obi-Wan telling Luke to trust his feelings, and to use the Force during the attack on the Death Star. Ahsoka is so anxious about getting her lightsaber back, her own anxiety interferes with her ability to track it down. When she stops and calms herself, the truth is revealed. That’s great stuff! It’s just one of those classic spiritual aspects of Star Wars that I can’t get enough of.”

Ultimately, these contrasts are the building blocks for the Star Wars universe – the tools that its creators use in crafting that timeless and intangible feeling of the iconic “galaxy far, far away.” Supervising Director Dave Filoni cites the episode as an essential departure from the frenetic intensity of the front lines, and an integral piece of the larger Saga.

“To a certain extent, audiences are coming to expect the combat storylines from the series, but there’s a lot more to Star Wars than the war itself; I think this episode really resonates because it captures a particularly nostalgic aspect. We got to focus on aspects that don’t get as much screen time when we’re in the middle of a battle,” says Filoni. “It’s also interesting to look at the various influences on Ahsoka from a different perspective. She’s being trained by Anakin, who eventually becomes Darth Vader. It’s an interesting dynamic, because we don’t necessarily know what happens to her – except for the fact that she doesn’t appear in Episode III. Because we see her in these high-intensity situations, it’s easy to forget that she’s still a child and that she’s impressionable. She’s definitely still learning – from Anakin, but also from her own experiences, from her mistakes, from those around her. She’s making her own choices, deciding her own values. How that will affect her ultimate destiny remains to be seen. When we screened this episode for the crew, almost everyone ranked it among their favorites for the season; I think it’s because it stirs up some of those questions, and in a way that has a distinct Star Wars feel.”

Clone Wars fans, start the new year with a double dose as Cartoon Network airs back-to-back episodes beginning at 9:00.

It all starts with “Grievous Intrique.” General Grievous emerges from the shadows to stir up trouble for the Jedi heroes, ensnaring them in a trap that threatens their mission and their lives. It’s a deadly game – and the scheming Separatist cyborg doesn’t plan on playing by the rules!

Then it’s off to a clone showdown in “The Deserter.” It’s brother against brother in a battle of ideologies.

Working from a secret message transmitted by a Jedi held prisoner by General Grievous, Obi-Wan and Anakin use the information to set a trap for their bitter enemy. But their plan backfires when Grievous springs a trap of his own. With their mission on the verge of disaster, Obi-Wan must battle Grievous while Anakin struggles to enact their escape.

For Matthew Wood – voice of General Grievous in the series and the live-action Saga, as well as supervising sound editor for The Clone Wars – the episode offers a welcome return for the series’ quintessential bad guy, providing an opportunity for the cybernetic antagonist to gain a long-awaited advantage over his Jedi adversaries.

“I see Grievous’ hatred of the Jedi stemming from intense jealousy; the Jedi have a skill that has been unattainable by Grievous,” says Wood. “Even though the technical skill of the lightsaber has been taught to him by Count Dooku, Grievous still lacks the Force sensitivity to grasp the true nature of the Jedi. So many things seem just out of reach to Grievous, intensifying his jealousy and frustration.”

To make matters worse for the General’s consistently thwarted ambitions, Grievous is saddled with an ineffectual army of comically inept battle droids – all of whom are also voiced by Wood. The dichotomy allows Wood to inject a bit of aggravated humor into his performance.

“Grievous is put in command of a massive droid army, yet the droids lack the skills to overtake the Jedi. The absurdity of the juxtaposition of those characters enhances my ability to portray them, especially because I record both Grievous and the battle droids continuously,” he says. “The droids are so limited by their mass-produced, low-cost processors and will never see the bigger picture of the war; their comedic navel-gazing will always be their undoing. While the General wants to be more of a leader and game-changer in the war, he has so far only been good at stalling our heroes. Personally, I like all of the moments of Grievous destroying battle droids, the ultimate manifestation of his frustrations. I play the droids and Grievous as a twisted Abbot and Costello routine.”

Behind the scenes, Wood is thrilled to remain such a central part of the Star Wars universe, relishing the chance to explore and expose his character’s motivations, while at the same time marveling at the opportunity to work in a world that had been so integral in his own professional and creative development.

“I was five years old when A New Hope was released. Star Wars stimulated my imagination on both a technical and storytelling level,” he says. “The first time I was even aware of the role that a film director played in making a movie was when I saw an image of George Lucas sitting with Alec Guinness on the set in Tunisia. I remember thinking, ‘I know who Obi-Wan is, but who is that other guy sitting next to him?’ And now, I’m working with him. Even after nearly twenty years with the company, it still feels like a dream to be involved in the creation of this fantasy universe.”

Star Wars: The Clone Wars “Brain Invaders”

Air Date: December 4 on Cartoon Network

Reunited after the Battle of Geonosis, Padawans Ahsoka Tano and Barriss Offee are assigned to take a supply ship back to Republic-controlled space. But their routine mission becomes a fight for survival when they discover that the ship has been overrun by a horde of deadly stowaways – Geonosian brain worms with the grotesque ability to control the thoughts and actions of their clone hosts. It is impossible to tell friend from foe when dealing with deadly “Brain Invaders” in an all-new episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, December 4 on Cartoon Network.

With their clone comrades controlled by the gruesome Geonosian brain worms, the Padawans must confront their greatest challenge yet. Though faced with a deadly threat to life and limb, it is their commitment to the Jedi teachings that is truly put to the test; with former friends as enemies, the two young women are forced to weigh the fate of the Republic against their own personal attachments.

“Due to Anakin’s teaching, I do feel that Ahsoka is developing similar attachment issues. Only time will tell if those issues will play a part in her destiny,” says Ashley Eckstein, voice of Ahsoka. “Over the course of the Clone Wars so far, Ahsoka has spent most of her time with Anakin, and she is really beginning to emulate him. She is becoming more and more like her Master in every episode; we’ll see if that’s a good thing or a bad thing,”

Ahsoka has found some balancing influences as well, particularly in the company of her fellow Padawan, Barriss. It is a dynamic that provides a sharp contrast to the sometimes reckless teachings of her Master.

“Ahsoka has become a better, more well-rounded Padawan because of her friendship with Barriss,” she says. “After becoming friends with Barriss, Ahsoka is now able to look at things from another point of view. She’s realizing that they each have different strengths, and as a team they work well together. When I think of the two of them together, I think Padawan Power!”

As for whether or not Ahsoka will succumb to the emotional tolls of the war, or to the emotional temptations that will one day turn her own master to the dark side, Eckstein remains optimistic.

“Maybe it’s just my own personal positive thinking, but I don’t see her going to the dark side. She just wants to be the best Padawan she can be, and ultimately prove that she deserves to become a Jedi – and sometimes that means making tough choices,” she says “One can’t overlook the overall message of Star Wars – that good will always overcome evil. Our show presents these lessons in such a cool way, and I think it’s a great message to teach kids today.”

When Luminara disappears while tracking the Geonosian warlord, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker lead a platoon of clone troopers in search of her. Following her trail, the heroes descend deep into the lair of the grotesque Geonosian queen – Karina the Great – where they discover that the hive is alive and teeming with undead defenders.

Though the episode finds Luminara confronted by agents of evil deep within the darkest bowels of Karina’s underground nest, actress Olivia d’Abo saw her character’s strength reflected by the grave nature of the circumstances. Rather than succumbing to despair, Luminara embodies the teachings of the Jedi Order even in desperate times. Despite her thoughtful and meditative nature, she is nonetheless a dedicated protector of peace and justice – and a formidable warrior when called to action. Faced with the potential escape of her quarry, she doesn’t hesitate to follow Poggle into the heart of darkness. Devoted to her noble cause even at the risk of life and limb, she is the quintessential Jedi Master – brave, strong, sage and selfless.

“Luminara is a Jedi, so she’s always going to have that ability to focus and remain calm,” says d’Abo “I’m thrilled to be playing a role that requires such wisdom and strength; it is really empowering.

Despite Luminara’s seemingly desperate plight, d’Abo relished the opportunity to tap into imagination and celebrate the creative spirit of the “galaxy far, far away.”

“The themes and characters in the [live-action] films have had such a major influence on me and everyone I know,” says d’Abo. “As a child, Star Wars allowed me to fall into another world that was more vivid, more defined, more authentic and so much more exciting. There’s nothing lightweight about the philosophy of the films, and I am finding that The Clone Wars series is just as timeless.”

Though perhaps best known for her role as Kevin Arnold’s older sister in TV’s The Wonder Years, d’Abo boasts a career that has included such iconic genre properties as Conan the Destroyer, Green Lantern: First Flight and Ultimate Avengers.

“I love science-fiction, the fantasy genre, and comic books,” she says. “They tend to stand the test of time because of their marvelous content; these kinds of projects will always capture people’s attention by providing far-away settings we’d like to escape to. I’ve been really lucky with all my roles and projects because I have an innate understanding of what they require. I just jump in and make them my own.”

Impossible odds. An impregnable fortress. A battle like nothing you’ve ever seen.

It’s the start of a four-part story arc when Anakin, Ahsoka and Ki-Adi-Mundi lead a landing party to destroy a droid factory that Poggle the Lesser has rebuilt on Geonosis, but things go terribly awry when Separatist gunners shoot down the Republic ships. Despite heavy losses, Anakin and Ki-Adi-Mundi must rendezvous in time to destroy the enemy factory before it can begin production.

Featuring far more intensity than has been seen previously in THE CLONE WARS series, the action-packed episode pushed the limits of Lucasfilm Animation’s production processes, showcasing the depth and breadth of the animated “galaxy far, far away” in ways that hadn’t been possible before.

“Internally, we just keep getting better and better,” says Dave Filoni, supervising director of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS. “There’s no way we could have done something like this in the first season. We just didn’t have the assets to populate a battle this big, but we’ve learned so much and we’re still learning. It’s pretty amazing to be able to do something so theatrical and ambitious.”

Previsualization is just one of the tools which has helped Filoni and team realize their wildest cinematic ambitions for the series. Rather than using conventional 2D storyboards, the show’s previsualzation is all done in the computer. This provides an opportunity for directors to work within a three-dimensional environment, blocking the action, the rhythm and the pacing with a fully cinematic depth of field. Originally pioneered by George Lucas during production of the classic live-action trilogy, “previs” is a technique which allows directors to visualize scenes before they are filmed – or, in the case of THE CLONE WARS, before they are animated.

“George [Lucas] wanted ‘Landing at Point Rain’ to be as intense as any live-action movie about the assault on Omaha Beach,” says Brian Kalin O’Connell, the episode’s director. “In order to give it that sense of frenetic intensity, we needed to be able to have a fully populated background. This episode was a challenge to our studios and is a testament to what we were all capable of doing in Season Two. George challenged us to make something big and didn’t let us deliver anything that didn’t raise the bar for the whole series. This episode was filled with challenges but I am really happy with how it turned out. It’s non-stop, in-your-face action, and I hope the fans like it.”

Here’s a list to get you started. Or, you can watch the show then come back here to see how many you caught on your own.

— After Cad Bane escapes from the Resolute, Anakin angrily holds his arms behind his back and storms off. This is a foreshadow/echo of Darth Vader’s similar action at the end of The Empire Strikes Back after the Millennium Falcon escapes from his clutches.

— When Admiral Yularen says “No! Lock them all down, hurry!” it is a reference to C-3PO’s line in A New Hope, as he frantically admonishes R2-D2 to shut down the trash compactors aboard the Death Star.

— The holographic mobile hovering over the Gungan toddler’s crib includes a colo clawfish, an opee sea killer and a sando aqua monster, the three massive underwater beasts that attack Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon’s submarine in The Phantom Menace.

—The Jedi shuttle’s design shares features with several classic ships – its cockpit is quite similar to the Millennium Falcon, and it changes orientation in flight just like Boba Fett’s Slave I and the Rebel B-wing fighter. Its shape, though, is based on a background cruiser barely seen in Attack of the Clones.
In a gambit later used by Han Solo and Luke Skywalker aboard the first dreaded Death Star, Cad Bane disguises himself in trooper armor to escape notice and slip past security.
— Anakin Skywalker and Chancellor Palpatine share a private meeting in this episode, as they also do in Episode II and Episode III. The fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu would prefer to keep the Chancellor out of Jedi affairs is a thread that continues powerfully in Episode III.
— When Mace Windu slides under a slamming blast door and snatches his lightsaber at the last possible moment, it is an action reminiscent of Indiana Jones’ iconic hat-grab from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
— Mustafar is, of course, featured prominently in Revenge of the Sith, but Darth Sidious’ secret installation in ‘Children of the Force’ is a different location than the mining facility from the live-action saga – although the architecture does share similar shapes and lines.
— Cad Bane attacks Ahsoka Tano with a wrist-launched lariat similar to the devices used by Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones and Boba Fett in Return of the Jedi.
— Jan-Gwa City closely resembles the bubble city of Otoh Gunga seen in The Phantom Menace, except that it is only partially submerged in a lake.

‘Children of the Force’ airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Cartoon Network.

Tasked by the Jedi Council to rekindle an old flame in order to solicit crucial – and dangerous – information from a suspected traitor, Senator Padmé Amidala finds herself torn between love and duty in “Senate Spy,” an all-new episode of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS, airing at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, October 16 on Cartoon Network.

Against Anakin’s vehement wishes, Padmé is recruited to investigate a fellow Senator – and former love interest – suspected of conspiring with the nefarious Banking Clan. A conflict as divisive as the Clone Wars has a way of turning hearts and minds, and she finds that even old friends may have new agendas. Meanwhile, Anakin must watch powerlessly from the shadows as his lady love willingly and deliberately courts the affections of another man….

While a relationship forged in the heat of war may be a crucible of heightened emotions, according to Catherine Taber – voice of Padmé Amidala – it is this fiery dynamic between two strong personalities that fuels the series’ heart and keeps THE CLONE WARS interesting.

“I think the relationship is just fun to watch,” says Taber. “We try to incorporate some of the things that are inherent to all deep love relationships – like jealousy and the little struggles for power, as well as those inside jokes that can only really exist between two people who know and trust one another. I want people to feel that when Anakin is in the mix, it is the only time when Padmé loses focus. In fact, I think it makes her uncomfortable, and she feels she has to prove – to herself – that her top priority is the Republic. I personally believe that, underneath it all, her primary allegiance would be to Anakin – but I don’t think she’d ever admit it.”

A departure from the epic battles and fierce fighting which has become a hallmark of THE CLONE WARS, “Senate Spy” explores an altogether different side of the conflict, focusing instead on the delicate political machinations as they play out behind the scenes of the swashbuckling space opera.

“Dave [Filoni] and the team have said from the beginning that they wanted to show the Star Wars Saga from different perspectives, and this episode is a great example of that,” says Taber. “I love the epic battles, of course, but here we have a chance to follow the mystery, the politics and the intrigue. These slow-burn political ‘battles’ are really driving the whole war effort. Dave actually had me watch [Alfred Hitchcock’s] Notorious before we started working on ‘Senate Spy.’ He wanted me to see the way the pressure builds – especially when love is involved. It’s a very different kind of danger than what we’ve seen in THE CLONE WARS. I really love that about the series; we are trying to give the Star Wars audience – old and new – something special.”
