Here’s an excerpt from the Issue 14 interview which is on newstands now.

An interview with Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles

For nine months of the year, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are possessed by supernatural entities. It’s like demons – or angels – have taken over their bodies and they are powerless to do anything but watch their days unfold through someone else’s eyes while they speak someone else’s thoughts and live someone else’s lives. Of course, those entities are just the fictional characters they play for their TV show, but when they’re Sam and Dean Winchester for “sixteen hours a day, five days a week – it’s like being in a different world,” Padalecki related. “I’m Sam Winchester more often than I’m Jared Padalecki!”

When Jared and Jensen are working those kinds of hours in the mindset of brothers who are trying to stop the apocalypse while dealing with their dysfunctional relationship and coping with the fact that the blood of all humankind could be on their hands due to the roles they played in freeing Lucifer, the enormity of it all can be rather “exhausting,” Ackles confirmed. “It’s been an exhausting season so far.”

What’s surprisingly not difficult for Ackles is having to pretend like he wants to kick Padalecki’s Sam’s ass to Hell and back. “I love it when they fight each other!” he insisted with a laugh. “In the past, Dean could never stay mad at his little brother, but this time he could because he has all the reasons in the world to be mad: his little brother caused the Apocalypse! I mean, come on!”

Padalecki agrees. “I love the conflict. Before it was like, ‘Oh, you made a deal with a demon, didn’t you?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Uh, okay. So, how long?’ ‘A year.’ ‘You suck. I’ll find a way to get you out. Hug me.’ But then the situations obviously changed, so even though the brothers still cared about each other, what Sam and Dean went through changed them both and separated them more into individuals, so their relationship got much darker. I like the dynamic of brother versus brother when they both think they’re doing the right thing for the right reasons. And I would like to see how dark Sam could get.”

Both actors don’t actually expect that things will go darker; they expect that Sam and Dean will change the destinies laid out for them in The End. “They still have their own inner demons and skeletons and secrets and all that to deal with,” Padalecki pointed out, “but I’m sure they’ll get back together and join forces somehow.” Ackles agreed, adding, “Yeah, I kinda think they’ll spend most of the rest of the season trying to fix things up and forgiving their mistakes, especially Sam, because he’s feeling guilty for Lucifer’s rising on Earth. He’s admitting his faults and trying to find redemption.”

Finally, there’s the comedy. Given what they can and can’t show on TV, a lot of this is being sold in the facial expressions of Sam, Dean and Castiel. Enjoy this clip from this week’s episode of Supernatural: My Bloody Valentine.

First, “a cupid has gone rogue and we need to stop him before he kills again.”

Thursday’s are killing me. In addition to the big Fringe winter finale, there’s also a huge episode of Supernatural and a great guest star on Vampire Diaries.

Looking back at the past seems to be the theme of the night. First up on Vampire Diaries: “Children of the Damned,” Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) recall the long-ago actions taken by townspeople including their father, Guiseppe Salvatore (guest star James Remar, “Dexter”), and Pearl (guest star Kelly Hu), leading to the devastating events that caused the rift in their relationship.

In the present, Bonnie’s (Katerina Graham) date with Ben (guest star Sean Faris) takes a frightening turn. Elena (Nina Dobrev) helps Stefan as he and Damon race to find the missing journal that belonged to Elena’s ancestor. Stefan learns the reason behind Alaric’s (Matt Davis) interest in both the journal and the town’s history. Damon discovers that an old acquaintance has returned to town with an agenda he understands. (Photo: Quantrell Colbert/The CW ©2009 The CW Network, LLC. All Rights Reserved.)

Then, we go back to the seventies to visit with a young John and Mary Winchester again in Supernatural: “The Song Remains the Same.” I got an early look at the episode, so you can click here to read that. Some spoilers, obviously, but I don’t give much away. What I didn’t mention there is that in addition to Anna, John and Mary, another old friend pays Sam and Dean a visit. . . I wonder who that could be. . .(Photo: David Gray/The CW)

It all begins tonight at 8:00 on The CW.

The angels were kind to me this week, giving me the episode early – which was a boon because I won’t be able to watch it come Thursday. Believe me, though, I’ll be thinking of all of you because I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this one.

Look at Dean over there, all crushed and serious. . . .

SPOILERS AHEAD

But mostly just my usual teasing

ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK

It’s no secret to anyone reading this far that the next episode is about another trip back in time to see John and Mary when they were young and just starting out. It’s called “The Song Remains the Same” and it’s a terrific mix of action, angst and story.

This time Castiel sends both Sam and Dean back to the seventies to stop Anna who plans to pull a Terminator and kill Mary before she can give birth to Lucifer’s vessel (aka Sam). It’s a tough trip for Castiel since he’s working with only half a mojo and that means that the boys are pretty much on their own once they arrive.

Amy Gumenick and Matt Cohen reprise their roles as the young Mary and John and I enjoyed every minute of their time on screen. We didn’t see much of Matt in “In the Beginning,” but this time around we get to see a lot more and it works. Amy is both charming and tough as the troubled Mary Winchester, the hunter who wants to have a normal life. Needless to say, she’s less than thrilled to see Dean show up on her doorstep again. Now if she can only figure out why the tall one keeps staring at her like a puppy who needs a hug!

There’s not much time for humor in the story as Dean and Sam have to figure out a way to save their parents without giving away the whole truth. Demons are one thing, but even for an experienced hunter like Mary, time travel and nasty angels are a little hard to buy.

Unfortunately, Anna does the explaining for them, when she initiates a fight scene that had to leave a mark on a couple of the show’s expert stunt men! (Oh, and I had to laugh at how misleading this photo of Anna is — it’s not at all what it looks like.)

What really makes “The Song Remain the Same” work is that everyone is really only trying to do the right thing in their own wrong way. Anna wants to kill Mary so that Lucifer won’t have a vessel. Dean just wants to save his brother. . . his mother. . . his father. . . Mary wants to have a home and a family with the man she loves and Sam . . . well, he just wants to not be responsible for the end of the world. Small stakes, huh? Hardly.

Let me now take a moment to sing the praises of Jared Padalecki. Yes, really. You all know that I’m a Jensen fan – a “Dean Girl,” if you will – but Jared has one scene in this episode that made my heartache. (That’s a good thing in this case.) It’s Sam’s one chance to tell his father how he really feels about him, even if John doesn’t understand that’s what’s happening at all.

That’s followed up with a poignant Dean and Mary scene that rivals his “don’t get out of bed” speech from their last episode together. The quiet moments don’t last long, this is Supernatural after all, and that means the bad guys get one more shot at winning the war. Before it was done two big things happened – one made me gasp and one had me shaking my head in wonder of the scripted elegance.

There aren’t many shows that can keep you glued to the screen with nothing but two actors trading dialouge. Could have been two minutes. Could have been ten. No pyrotechnics, no special effects, no jokes. Just really good storytelling and that, my friends, is Supernatural at its best.

Watch Supernatural: “The Song Remains the Same” Thursday, February 4 at 9:00 on The CW.

Here’s a look at the next episode of Supernatural. They were calling this one “Back to the Future II” for obvious reasons, but I imagine the legal department had a say in changing it to “The Song Remains the Same.” I like that title better because it’s haunting and I think this one is gonna hurt.

SAM’S BODYSNATCHED!
High school nerd Gary (guest star Colton James), conjures up a body-switching spell and changes bodies with Sam (Jared Padalecki). Thrilled by his new handsome and built body, Gary (now Sam) investigates a case with Dean (Jensen Ackles) and takes advantage of Sam’s good looks and age by hitting on women and getting drunk. Meanwhile, the real Sam is stuck inside Gary’s teenage body, dealing with intrusive parents and high school.
No official photos from this episode so I’ve used one from the upcoming “My Bloody Valentine.”
