True Blood Episode 1.6 “Cold Ground” Recap

Air Date: Oct. 12, 2008

We pick up with Sookie finding Gran dead and Bill’s there shortly after – awkward. And so is Sam. This is all very uncomfortable. Sookie tries to wrap her head around everything and Sam tries to comfort her. He’s sorry for the fight they had and Sookie has a great line as she asks if Sam could apologize to her some other time.

Sam and Bill of course have to bow up to each other. Sam threatens to kill Bill if anything happens to Sookie. The local authorities interview Bill, who says he doesn’t think Gran was the intended victim. Sam stays with her because Bill has to get home before dawn. Sookie refuses to leave the house and even begins cleaning the place up. Of all the disturbing images this show throws at us, just the simple one of Sookie cleaning up her own grandmother’s blood is going to haunt me for a minute.

There are “friends” all around the house later to pay their respects. Sookie can read their thoughts and hears them talking about how crazy she is.She snaps when Maxine Fortenberry touches Gran’s pecan pie, then goes upstairs and has a talk with Tara and Lafayette. Jason goes to work and his friends ask what’s he doing there – he doesn’t know.

Jason hits Sookie and says it’s all her fault. Tara goes off on him and throws him out. Later, she throws everyone out. Bellefour wants to know what Jason was up to the night of the murder. Jason throws the detective into a truck. Did I mention that boy is not bright? Bill has a dream that someone is strangling Sookie and rushes to her side, but she’s OK.

Estranged Uncle Bartlett shows at the funeral, by Jason’s invite. Sookie’s upset but Jason suggests she give Unc a break. The thoughts of people overwhelm Sookie and she tells them to shut the *blank* up and runs away. Tara’s drunk mama  (although not drunk at the moment) delivers her own unique eulogy and then asks Tara for money to help rid her of the “demon” inside. Yeah, that doesn’t go well.

Jason battles his addiction, throwing the V away and then crawling around on the ground after it. Sam walks Sookie home, where she tells him she needs to be alone.

Sookie finally brings herself to eats Gram’s pecan pie. Both feeling lonely, Sam and Tara hook up again and this time there are emotions involved. Sookie runs across the fields to Bill’s house. They make love and she asks Bill to bite her. He obliges Tara hears Jason and his new girl  in the act and then runs away from Sam. She goes to see her mother, who says she knew Tara would come.

True Blood Episode 1.5 “Sparks Fly Out”

Airdate: Oct. 5, 2008

Sookie and Bill argue about him thinking about draining a cop and he claims he won’t call on her again. A very angry Tara confronts Lafayette about dealing V blood, especially to Jason. She recounts a horrifying ordeal about them having to drain the blood from Jason’s appendage.

And if that didn’t creep me out enough, Jason comes by and demonstrates with a sausage. I know it’s HBO, but I could have gone the rest of my natural life without seeing that. Lafayette tells Jason that Tara’s been in love with Jason since she was six.  This boy Jason is not bright. Lafayette wants to train him in “V” usage -  really? Did I mention Jason is not bright? V, Lafayette explains, affects different people in different ways. It gives Lafayette a vampire’s strength, for example.

Sam finally mans up and asks Sookie out, she says yes. During a conversation with Detective Bellefour, he realizes Sookie is telepathic. He mentions that Tara and Jason have been hanging out, so Sookie tries to find out more.

Tara blocks Sookie by thinking nonsensical thoughts and tells Sookie she doesn’t have to know everyone’s business.

They’re having a Descendants of the Glorious Dead meeting and are trying to take the cross down because they don’t want Bill to burst into flames. They cover the cross with a flag, which Bill puts back in its place. Bill tells them he has too much respect for Old Glory to put himself before it. Man, this vampire should be a politician. He tells them vampires can stand before a cross or a Bible. Sheesh, how do you kill these guys in the True Blood universe then?

Bill tells them the story of Tolliver Humphries, a brave man in Bill’s regiment who died trying to save a young boy. Then the mayor presents Bill with a picture of him and his family.  Bill explains that after becoming a vampire, he couldn’t go back to his family.

For Jason, allows him altered perceptions like a vision of Tara as some sort of water spirit.  He tells her he knows how she feels about him and she realizes he’s high on V. She asks him to come back when he’s sober.

Lafayette hears some drunken ruffians making fun of him and proceeds to beat the hell out of them with his vampire strength. Sookie tries to kiss Sam but can’t get over Bill. Sam warns her that vampires can’t be trusted and that they’ll always turn on people. She tells Sam that he’s doing pretty good job of turning on her now.

And speaking of Bill, he gets interviewed by the sheriff and Bellefour. Bill explains the recent killings weren’t by vampires. He explains that the corpses weren’t drained and no vampire, even him, could have resisted a fresh corpse full of blood.

Bill flashes back to the night he was made into a vampire by a “widow” who seduces wayward soldiers. She drained the rest but because Bill was basically good and didn’t desire her, she had to take him. She tells him he’ll have to watch his family grow old and die and that they will be killed anyway if they harbor a vampire.

Back in present day, Tara finds Jason out behind the restaurant having sex with a newly divorced woman. Ah, that’s classy. Did I mention that Jason is not that bright? Tara dumps garbage on the pair. Sookie goes home and somebody’s killed Gram. Aw, I liked Gram. That’s cold, man.
