Fringe Tweet-Peat: Fab or Fail?

It’s the morning after and things aren’t looking so good for the Fringe Tweet-Peat experiment. The idea was sound — basically live blogging by two cast members and two producers which shows up on screen pop-up video style. Fun!

In reality, not so much thanks to three big issues. First of all, Twitter, unlike chat rooms, are designed to show only the side of the conversation that comes from people you’re following. As a result, people following along on TV or on the FringeonFox Twitter page saw answers but no questions.

At one point Joshua Jackson tweeted about something being an adlib. Wonderful bit of trivia, but what was an adlib? Obviously, someone asked about a specific incident and he responded.

In order to combat this problem, I tried following the hashtag and wow, that was a nightmare. Hundreds and hundreds of Tweets per minute were rolling in at the height, mostly people complaining or just offering useless cheers of support. The chances of finding a question and a matching answer were slim and none.

The second issue was the time zone. As far as I could tell, the West coast airing of the show simply ran the same Twitter feed as the East coast so no one who came in on PST got their questions answered. Please do correct me if I’m wrong on this. I followed part of the EST feed online then watched the TV feed in PST and they looked the same to me.

Finally, you have the issue of stuff on screen messing with the enjoyment of the show. Personally, this didn’t bother me because it was a rerun but many people tuned in not knowing with hopes of catching up on the finale before the new season begins.

So what’s the verdict? Was the Fringe Tweet-Peat party fab or an epic fail?

Join the Fringe Tweet-Peat Party

Twitter has really hit the big time! For the first time in broadcast history, Fox is arranging a Twitter party for two of their top shows — Fringe and Glee.

During this week’s repeat episodes, cast and crew members from both shows will sign on to Twitter for a Tweet-Peat Party that will then scroll on the special Twitter website and on air.

The Fringe event happens Thursday, Sept. 3 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) with Glee on Friday, Sept. 4 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

You can sign up now at twitter.com to follow the cast/producers (individual Twitter Usernames are noted below). Then on Thursday, Sept. 3 follow the Fringe event at twitter.com/FRINGEonFOX.

Remember to use #FRINGE in your tweets so they can be easily found.

And the Madness Begins

It’s only preview night at Comic Con and already the Twitter lines are loaded with Tweets! The traffic is bad, the lines are just starting to move and the Twilight fans are already camping out for their panel which is on Thursday. Supernatural Trends on Twitter

This past weekend, Supernatural fans rolled into the top ten trending topics on Twitter with their live coverage of the Asylum con in the UK. Using the tag #asylm (no U because the proper spelling caused too many unrelated items to fall into the search results) a hand-full of tweeters kept the fandom informed of who said what, to whom and where. Fans all over the world logged in all through the night in order to get the latest updates and it created a party atmosphere that is sure to become a convention must from now on in.

Missed all the fun? You can still check out the #aslym tag, but I’d recommend checking out Supernatural Wiki for more comprehenisve reports.

For a real treat, check out Misha Collins on Twitter and be prepared to be both amused, scared and confused. This really is Misha and that fact has been verified by a number of good sources including the CW publicity head and Misha himself at the con.

Here’s a typical Misha post as he headed out to the con:

“on way to Birmingham. I’m worried because I didn’t get all the shots I need to travel to an undeveloped country. hope I don’t get cholera.”

Just for the record, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki were asked about Twitter and they both said that they DO NOT have accounts. So anyone you see claiming to be Jensen or Jared is a fake.

Here’s Misha hiding out in his bunker after the recent LA earthquake:

Yes, he’s more than a little crazy, and that’s why we adore him so.

S.A.R.A.H. Is Twittering!

As if we needed more proof that Eureka’s S.A.R.A.H is the coolest house ever, the artificially intelligent home of Sheriff Jack Carter is now on Twitter.

According to her latest statistics, just over 1,000 fans are getting Sarah’s updates. Her updates aren’t just small talk, as she also has been shown to spoil the occasional plot point. Before last week’s season premiere, Sarah mentioned she was helping Zoe get ready for work. Zoe’s new job was a storyline in the episode.

Adweek reports that Sarah isn’t the first fictional character to get her twitter on. Chuck Bartowski, the central character of NBC show Chuck fleshes out his nerdy persona online with everything from a Twitter account to a dating profile. With the publicity these efforts are getting, expect a lot more TV characters to embrace social networking.
